Hey there, Church Leaders and Enthusiasts!
Welcome back to the Church Made Simple podcast, where we're on a mission to eliminate confusion and make church simple. I'm thrilled to have you with us for episode two, and if you missed the first one, do yourself a favor and check it out. Today's topic is one that's close to my heart, and I can't wait to dive in.
Today, we're talking about something fundamental—your church's mission. The burning question on the table is, does your church have a killer mission? And no, I don't mean killer in the sense of being awesome. Stick around, and I'll explain exactly what I mean.
We kick things off by exploring what a mission is in the context of a church. It's not about the how or the where but the why—the reason your church exists. For example, at my church, Revived Church, our mission is crystal clear: we exist to introduce real people to the real Jesus. Simple, impactful, and it guides everything we do.
Now, here's a key insight: how you describe your mission matters—a lot. In a world where attention spans are shorter than ever, simplicity is your best friend. I'm a big fan of using language that even a third-grader could memorize and share with others. If your mission statement is too long or convoluted, chances are people won't engage with it.
I recently had some fun experimenting with AI to craft a mission statement for a church. While the AI-generated statement was quite lengthy, I used it to highlight the pitfalls of overcomplicating our mission statements. Long, intricate statements are not only hard to remember but also a barrier to effective communication.
Now, let's tackle the infamous "Love God, Love People" mission statement. While it may seem like a simple and universally applicable mission, I argue that it's lazy and doesn't do justice to the profound words of Jesus. In today's culture, the word "love" is often misinterpreted, and we need to be intentional about conveying the depth of Jesus' teachings.
I share examples of concise and impactful mission statements from various churches, emphasizing the importance of clarity and memorability. One standout example is "Connecting people to Jesus and one another," a mission born out of a coaching session with a military church. This statement encapsulated their unique calling and became a powerful rallying cry for the congregation.
I challenge you to reconsider your church's mission statement. Is it clear, concise, and reflective of your unique calling? In our next episode, we'll explore a crucial question: Should your ministry align with your mission, or should your mission evolve to match your ministry? It's a game-changer, so stay tuned.
