He comes into construction naturally, as his grandfather was a builder in northern Saskatchewan, and his father supervised road construction crews. His career started working for a small trade contractor, and he soon moved into the world of general contracting. He was part of the leadership and estimating team on projects ranging from multi-family, high-rise, commercial, retail, and industrial in Alberta and British Columbia. As a project manager, Geoff managed projects under several delivery methods, including Design-Bid-Build, Design-Build, and Construction Management, as well as managing trades who worked under a unit-rate model. Since transitioning into a career as an educator, Geoff has expanded his project vocabulary to include Lean methods and Integrated Project Delivery. By helping his students understand the different ways a project can be delivered, he hopes to continue positively impacting the construction industry. His initial foray into the Canadian job market saw him working on a construction site alongside a Ukrainian plumber. His determination and passion to construction led to his enrollment at George Brown College in 2004 to study Construction Engineering Technology. An influential figure in his academic journey was Clint Kissoon, a construction cost estimation professor, who guided him to join the Canadian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (CIQS) in 2006. Mykola achieved his Professional Quantity Surveyor designation in 2014, demonstrating his steadfast commitment to his craft. Upon graduation, Mykola's professional career took flight as a Junior Estimator for a family-owned design-builder firm in Barrie, Ontario. His career trajectory included roles in prestigious firms such as AECOM, AMEC, Turner & Townsend, Faithful + Gould an SNC Lavalin company, and finally EllisDon. Mykola contributed to the Toronto-York-Spadina Subway Extension, Maple Leaf Foods Processing Facility, Bay Adelaide East Tower, and the Darlington Nuclear Power Plant Refurbishment. She works primarily as a coach, facilitator and trainer for project teams with a focus on Integrated Project Delivery (IPD), collaborative construction practices, lean and sustainability. She worked on some of the first IPD projects in Canada and has been a key champion in bringing it across the country from BC to Ontario. She oversees Lean integration and training; and, was instrumental in setting up and managing the waste diversion policy in 2010 that has seen the company divert over 75% of its waste in the last 9 years. Jen is also on the board of directors and is committee chair with the Integrated Project Delivery Alliance and is on the board of directors for the Edmonton Construction Association. Jen attended the University of Alberta and has a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Bachelor of Education Degree. She taught in both Edmonton and Seoul, South Korea; and, she uses this training extensively in her current role. He started off working in construction with a Ukrainian plumber while taking English as a Second Language (ESL) classes at night. In 2004, he was accepted into the Construction Engineering Technology program at George Brown, where he took a construction cost estimation class. His instructor inspired him to join CIQS as a student member and he earned his PQS in 2014. “I have always wanted to be associated with landmarks that will remain on the Canadian landscape for generations.” At the time of this interview, he was the preconstruction manager at EllisDon in Ottawa. Currently, he is the commercial director for EllisDon in Chicoutimi, QC. Kelly Parker, PQS has over 25 years of experience working as a contractor’s mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) quantity surveyor in the UK before relocating to Canada and joining Tech-Cost in 2015 as an M&E cost consultant. As a “poacher turned gamekeeper”, she understands how services are installed on-site, which is key when preparing estimates and reviewing change. Growing up, she saw herself as working in a bank or possibly being a brick layer. When her father told her that quantity surveying was a good profession, she “decided to count the bricks instead of laying them.” She volunteers as a CIQS Ambassador and sits on the CIQS education committee, and she is excited about promoting the Institute and quantity surveying as a strong career choice. “As quantity surveyors, the world is our oyster and we are limited only by our own beliefs.” Michael Gabert, PQS(F), MRICS, GSC is the director for BTY’s Prairie’s region, specializing in Lender’s Technical Advisory, Independent Certification, Payment Certification and Cost Management services for public authorities, owners, developers, architects and financial institutions. His experience encompasses independent costing, compliance review, preparation, and certification of substantial and total completion on major projects.
