This episode is a message that Tim gave at the Quadra Island Bible Church on Sunday May 19, 2024.
In Luke chapter 14, Jesus was invited to dine with some Pharisees on the Sabbath, during which he taught them and told parables… Jesus made some challenging comments to them as he confronted head-on some of their misplaced religious confidence and exposed their self-righteousness.
In this setting Jesus tells the parable of the Great Banquet and warns the religious of his day not to trust in their own righteousness or become preoccupied with the things of the world lest they miss their invitation into God’s Kingdom. Jesus also demonstrates the radical compassion of God toward the poor, and once again points to the opposite-nature of the kingdom where the first become last and the last become first.
Lastly, Jesus uses this parable to invite us to live as he lived… to go among the poor and the broken in the streets, to welcome them - in fact compel them to God’s banquet, because the Kingdom of God belongs to such as these (James 2:5)
