Our May 2024 podcast features Alex Cohen, M.D., a fellowship trained cornea specialist who has been in practice since 2011. He recently moved back to Arizona, his home state, and now works at the newly opened Desert Vista Eye Specialists office in Phoenix. He shares insights on manual, small-incision cataract surgery, among popular methods of cataract extraction, and more.
Cohen obtained his M.D. and Ph.D. from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City and then attended residency and fellowship at the top ranked University of Iowa. Following his training, he was on the faculty at the Dean McGee Eye Institute in Oklahoma City, serving as fellowship director and receiving the Stanley Muenzler, M.D. Endowed Professor of Corneal Disease. After his time in academic medicine, Dr Cohen moved back to Iowa where he was a partner in a very busy private practice, performing well over 1000 cataract, cornea, and glaucoma surgeries per year in addition to giving intravitreal injections for macular degeneration and diabetes on a routine basis.
He continues to serve as an oral board examiner and helps to develop both the oral and written examinations for certifying the next generation of ophthalmologists. In addition, Dr Cohen has been traveling to the African nation of Eswatini since 2015, helping to establish a high volume medical and surgical eye care program in this impoverished nation. His special interesting include, complex cataract surgery, LASIK, cornea transplants, pterygium surgery, minimally invasive glaucoma surgery and intravitreal injections for macular disorders.
