It’s been shown that positive, daily interactions with family, friends, neighbors, colleagues and even people we encounter as we go about our days help us thrive personally and professionally. And yet, we live in an era where an increasing number of obstacles prevent us from communicating and conversing well, or at all with others. What can we do to make it easier, more pleasant, and more rewarding to converse and connect and do it with greater authenticity, ease, and confidence?

Today’s gal pal, Patti DeNucci, a networking and communications expert, takes on this challenge with her latest book, More Than Just Talk: The Essential Guide for Anyone Who Wants to Enjoy Better Conversations.

In this episode we talk about:

  • Strategies for having good conversations
  • How being curious creates better conversations
  • The happiness quotient of quality conversations, long and short
  • How to work through a difference of opinion

Here’s a glance:

[4:06] As a practical, self-described Utilitarian, Patti is a Naked Nelly on her fingers and a deeply festive Solid Sister on her toes.

[9:56] Why communication and connection are continuing themes throughout Patti’s work.

[13:27] In her new book, More Than Just Talk: The Essential Guide for Anyone Who Wants to Enjoy Better Conversations, Patti describes how better listening can lead to higher-quality conversations.

[22:14] The universal characteristics of a good conversation.

[27:45] How sharing authentic and vulnerable human stories helps us connect to others on a deeper level.

[30:29] Conversation statistics: Who is better at it and why?

[34:55] The chemical and emotional payoffs of quality conversations.

[43:38] Patti describes why in business endeavors, a good conversationalist garners automatic success.

[48:43] In the Flip the Chip segment, Mary highlights Patti’s short list of how to have better conversations.
