On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde talk about the importance of the spring practices for this USC football team that is looking to make some major improvements heading into year two of the Lincoln Riley era, including winning the Trojans first Pac-12 Championship since 2017 and making the squads first appearance in the College Football Playoffs.
Coach Hyde equates last season to a wedding between USC football and Riley, where everyone got together and welcomed in a new staff and a bunch of new players. Excitement levels were high for this new “relationship” with good vibes and eternal hope. Riley delivered with 11 wins and a Heisman Trophy for Caleb Williams, so what will happen in year two? Coach Hyde says the honeymoon is over and now the real work begins, focusing on achieving higher team goals. This is the Trojans last season in the Pac-12 and the rest of the league knows it. Not only does USC have a target on its back, the competition in the Conference of Champions is better than ever. The Trojans desperately need to show improvements this season for any chance at a championship run and to build some momentum heading into year one in the Big 10. There is no time for the Trojans to rest on their laurels, improvements need to happen over the next six weeks during spring practice.
