Many professionals fall into a predictable pattern: working intensely from one holiday season to the next, only stopping when exhaustion or illness forces them to rest. It doesn’t have to be that way. By intentionally scheduling rest and recovery periods alongside professional and personal milestones, you can maintain consistent energy and avoid burnout.

Here’s the four-step process to plan your year strategically:

  1. Map out known busy periods: Add key business events like quarterly deadlines, conferences, or year-end cycles to your calendar.
  2. Add project milestones: Identify major deliverables or project pinch points.
  3. Include personal events: Schedule important family occasions and personal commitments, such as anniversaries, exams, or personal challenges.
  4. Plan your breaks: Strategically block time off before and after busy periods to recharge and stay effective.

By following this method, you can create a balanced year that supports both professional achievements and personal wellbeing.
