Manage episode 357068380 series 3438424
Imagine a beautiful Spring morning in the North Carolina countryside. The air outside is filled with the sounds of birds, with one standing out above all others: the Northern Cardinal.
The Northern Cardinal is a colorful bird that is native to North America. Males are easily recognizable with their bright red feathers, while females have a reddish-brown color with hints of red. It is one of the few bird species in which the female sings as well as the male.
The Northern Cardinal is a highly territorial creature and will fiercely defend their territory against other birds, even their own reflections. They are also known for their unique mating behavior, where the male feeds the female during courtship by offering her seeds or insects. Northern Cardinals are common backyard birds and can often be seen at bird feeders, particularly in the winter when food is scarce. Interestingly, the Northern Cardinal is the state bird of seven US states, making it one of the most recognized and beloved birds in the country.
