Episode 13 - Laying Down the Law
Manage episode 311669381 series 3164657
On this episode, the guys discuss the Old Testament law, and what we are supposed to do with it today in our 21st century lives. After intros and coffee talk (0:00-5:47), the guys jump into their discussion about the Law, talking about the role that the Law plays in the Bible, and the specific role that the Law played for Israel in the Old Testament (5:48-12:04). They then move into a conversation about the way that "law" worked in the ancient Near East, and the difference between how they saw law vs. how law operates in our society today (12:05-19:58). They next get to talking about the nature of ancient Near Eastern law, and how law was viewed and used in their culture and worldview, and how the OT Law separates itself from it's surrounding culture (while also being contained within it) due to the nature of it being situated in the covenant. They talk, too, about how the OT LAW is both legal wisdom and stipulations of a treaty (19:59-34:51). Next, they talk about how to understand the culturally-rooted nature of the OT Law, and how we should use the law in our Act today (see the Story of the Bible series for more on this). They also discuss whether the OT Law was better than the surrounding cultures (34:52-43:03). They conclude the episode discussing how we should approach the law today, what it means for us in the 21st century, and how we should use it, ending on how Jesus talked about and used the law (43-04-57:15).
