The National Planning Commission and the International Organization for Migration held a forum on migration and development in Southern Africa recently. Under the theme: Migration as a Development Catalyst, it has emerged that the African diaspora plays a critical role in development, sending over 65 billion US Dollars annually to the continent. This surpasses what Africa receives in international aid.
The forum sought to explore the opportunities to address key migration issues in the region including policy gaps, best practice on migration management & how to leverage diaspora engagement to participate in rebuilding their home nation. South Africa is considered a top destination country for migrants across the continent due to the economic, linguistic and cultural exchange opportunities available.
