In Episode 64, a special episode of the Virtual Velo Podcast, we’re bringing you an inspiring conversation with Cody McKay, founder of Project Heart, and our very own Chris. Both are passionate cyclists with a unique perspective—overcoming life-altering cardiac challenges to return to and thrive in the endurance sport they love.

Cody, a 33-year-old competitive cyclist from Ottawa, Canada, takes us through his journey from being diagnosed with an ascending aortic aneurysm in 2021 to undergoing open-heart surgery in late 2022. Remarkably, he was back on the bike just six weeks later and racing competitively by May 2023. He shares how this transformative experience led him to establish Project Heart, a charity dedicated to raising awareness about heart health in the endurance athlete community.

Chris shares his own cardiac journey, shedding light on the parallels and lessons learned in the seven months since undergoing a triple coronary bypass. Now a passionate advocate for heart health, Chris is using his platform to discuss the misconceptions athletes face about their fitness and health, the disconnect between the medical and endurance athlete community, and emphasizes the importance of screening tools like Coronary Artery Calcium Scans.

This episode dives deep into the myths surrounding “Athlete’s Heart Syndrome,” the dangers of assuming fitness equates to immunity from heart issues, and the life-saving significance of early detection and advocacy. Cody and Chris discuss the role of virtual cycling in the movement, including Project Heart events on Zwift and how listeners can get involved.

Join us for an eye-opening conversation about heart health, resilience, and the power of community in endurance sports. Whether you’re an avid cyclist or inspired by stories of overcoming challenges, this is an episode you can’t miss!
