On this episode of the Well, Morgan and Blake talk to Assistant Director of Student Wellness Brian Vanderheyden. They discuss Brian's background, what self-care is, and how that relates to different social groups students identify with. Some questions they discussed today are: - How do you recognize when you need to take time for yourself? - Why is there a stigma around self-care being selfish? - How do you balance self-care with service towards your community? - How do our identities and history determine what we do for self-care? Self-care doesn't have to be expensive, hard to make time for, or selfish. Some simple forms of self care include: - Eat food that energizes you - Take time off when sick - Take time off from social media and the internet - Share feelings with someone trustworthy like a friend or counselor - Find things that make you laugh - Say no to extra responsibilities - Ask for help when you need it - Make time for friends whose company you enjoy - Set boundaries with co-workers and peers ISU Disclaimer: The views, opinions, and positions expressed in this podcast are those of the speaker alone and do not represent the views, opinions, or positions of Iowa State University or any of its subsidiary programs or divisions.
