Luc Besson is often overlooked as a filmmaker of this generation, despite his extensive body of work. Beginning his career with L’Avant Dernier in the early 1980s, Besson has built a directorial portfolio that includes more than twelve films. Furthermore, he is a dedicated writer and producer, contributing to both French and American cinema. Among his notable works is Leon: The Professional, which features Natalie Portman in her first significant role, telling the story of a youthful hitman who takes a recently orphaned girl under his wing as his apprentice.
