The Diaspora and us
Diaspora (a definition): people settles far from their ancestral homelands.
Lindy and I talk about our experience as being part of the African diaspora and what it’s like to be brought up as Black in the UK.
Our family is originally Zambian but our parents moved to England about twenty years ago. In this episode, we look back to where our family comes from, so as to look forward to what we would like our family to be.
We talk about definitions of home. When talking about Zambia, our parents call it ‘home’, even though they haven’t lived there for many years and certain places have drastically changed since they were there. I find myself asking, what makes home?
Lindy feels that different places can be different types of home. Zambia is home because of extended family. England is home because it’s where we’ve been brought up. We can make different homes throughout our lives.
We speak about Zambia being part of our ancestral lineage but even our Zambian ancestors migrated from other areas. When reviewing the migrations of people in history, it’s clear to see that home is not a fixed place. Even as we look to our past to understand our identity, perhaps, home is a concept that we can continue to define and re-define for ourselves.
We talk ancestors, bride-prices (eek!), traditions. We ask are we British enough? Zambian enough?
