老外来了：学汉语真难！

前段时间，咱们喜马拉雅收到一位粉丝留言：

很多人说中文比英文难学，外国朋友们真的这样觉得吗？学习中文时，有没有因为文化差异而发生有趣的事？

今天，我们就来回答这位粉丝的问题，聊一聊“外国人学汉语”这件事。

1. 汉语真的就这么难吗？

学过汉语的Sarrah给出了肯定答案：

和英语比起来，大多数外国人would agree that Chinese is more difficult to learn（汉语更难学）。

而且，包括Rosetta Stone（语言科技公司开发的一款语言学习软件产品）在内的很多language-learning websites（语言学习网站），公认Mandarin Chinese is one of the most challenging languages for English speakers（汉语是最有挑战性的语言之一）。

2. 为什么汉语会那么难呢？

中文和英文不一样，Chinese doesn’t use an alphabet（中文不是拼音文字），而是一种表意文字。像Sarrah，已经学了一些中文，但还是not be able to read any Chinese characters（不太认识汉字）。

但对于英语来说，if you learned how to pronounce the alphabet（如果你学习了字母），并且知道what sounds letters usually make（什么字母会发什么音），you can read new words fairly quickly（你就能很快读出一个单词）。

拿invitation这个词举例，英语国家的人基本上看到就能读出来invitation；或者别人说了invitation这个词，哪怕之前没听过，写出来也差不到哪儿去。

所以说，English is easier for many people to learn.

虽然汉字学起来很难，但要是想在中国的生活的话，还是要学习汉字的。比如打车的时候，如果Sarrah can’t read the street sign，那很有可能就打不上车。所以，在中国生活，不认识汉字的话，it can be difficult。

3. Sarrah学习汉语的感受

Sarrah came to China in 2014 to work as a teacher.

Sarrah一开始并不知道在中国会待那么久，但她还是觉得it was important to learn the language（学好汉语很重要）。

Learning the local language makes life easier.学习当地的语言可以让生活变得更简单。因为这可以帮助你use public transportation（乘坐公共交通）, buy things at the local supermarket（在当地超市购物）, and feel more confident when attempting new things for the first time（也会有自信尝试新事物）。

除此之外，学好汉语，allows Sarrah to better understand the culture and respect where she lives（对中国文化更加了解，也会更加尊重所居住的地方）。并且，因为语言通了，就可以make friends with her coworkers（和中国同事交朋友），she’ll not feel so alone in a foreign country（即使在异国他乡，也不会感到孤单）。

Sarrah是一个对自己要求很高的人，她觉得如果住在一个地方，不communicate or understand those around her的话，那对她来说，将会是rude and silly（不礼貌并且有点傻）。

4. 外国人是怎么学汉语的？

和我们学英语一样，也是要上lessons，而且还会host cultural activities（举办文化活动）。此外，为了让外国朋友更好地了解、感受中国文化，他们还会有丰富多彩的体验活动，比如，在传统节日的时候，他们会have a party，并且make Chinese dishes together，也会包粽子，做月饼，还会have special classes（上特别的课程），学习Chinese painting or calligraphy（中国书画）。

Sarrah还在坚持学习汉语，she is trying to be Chinese（想让自己像一个native speaker一样）。

5. Sarrah学习汉语的2大挑战

Sarrah学汉语的时候，2个最大的挑战是tones和her confidence（自信）。

Tones (音调）方面：

Sarrah第一次学习有音调的语言，她的挑战在于：

She could say the correct word but with the wrong tone. 词能说正确，但音调总是说不准。这真的是一个trouble，因为汉语有4个音调，音调稍微一不对的话，it changes the entire meaning（整个意思就变了）。

举个例子：

“问”和“吻”的拼音都是wen，但如果把“我问你”说成“我吻你”，那可就闹笑话了。

Confidence（自信）方面：

Sarrah used to be very shy（之前很害羞），对于她来说，to make eye contact with people（和别人有眼神交流） or talk to strangers（和陌生人交谈）都相当hard。但来到中国后，in order to survive（为了很好地生活），她不得不leave her comfort zone（离开自己的舒适区），talk with many new people。

Learning a language can be intimidating. 学习一门语言可能让人望而却步。

因为我们总是会don’t want to make mistakes or look silly（不想犯错误或看起来很傻）。但是这些错误，是学语言过程中的a normal part（很正常的一部分），想要学好语言的话，不得不要学着to be more brave（要勇敢）。

而且，如果不practice it with others，那么you can’t improve in Chinese。

Sarrah后来就变得内心很强大，she usually will laugh at herself and try to move on（自嘲一下，然后继续学习）。

除了这2个大的挑战，Sarrah还提到了另外一个挑战：

因为Sarrah looks foreign（看上去就是外国人），it can be harder to communicate in Chinese（用中文交流就会更难），因为很多当地人一看到外国人面孔，他们not be prepared for them to speak Chinese（没有准备好用汉语和他们交流）。

6. 外国网友学中文的感受

很多网友都提到how difficult Chinese is to learn（中文是多么地难学），但他们也坚信，it’s quite rewarding as well（一切都是非常值得的）。来看几个网友的评价：

*rewarding /rɪˈwɔːrdɪŋ/ adj. 值得的，有意义的

网友一：

“Gonna start learning Chinese! Love the language and love the culture!”

开始喜欢上了中文。爱上了这种语言，喜爱中国文化。

网友二：

Another user says they are in that stage of Chinese learning where they can understand what others are saying and at the same time they can’t.

这位网友说，他们正处于“能明白好像又不明白”的学习阶段。

网友三：

“I’m learning Chinese. This is so cool to me.”

正在学习汉语，这对我来说很酷！

网友四：

“...you have to hear multiple native speakers and then compare or imitate them and get feedback.”

要多听native speaks说的语言，然后compare（比较）或者imitate them（模仿他们），然后get feedback（得到反馈）。

7. 老外学汉语的趣事

Sarrah总是会mix up two similar-sounding Chinese words（混淆了两个听起来相似的中文词），刚开始学中文的时候，Sarrah always mixed up “帅”and“水” or“坐” and “走”。因为这个缘故，Sarrah身上发生了2件趣事：

趣事一：

有一次在中文课上，Sarrah告诉老师：A man was很水。这是一个很好玩的mistake，

然后，they laughed about it together（全班哄堂大笑）。

趣事二：

Sarrah和老师同时走到了学校喷泉边，she was trying to be polite，然后对老师说了“请坐”instead of“请走”。Sarrah意识到自己说错后，she was very embarrassed（窘极了），用Sarrah原话是“I wanted to die”。

实际上，像Sarrah这样的“小错误”are very common，很多网友also post their own stories，我们来看一个：

一位学汉语的澳洲人告诉他们的老师“有了”（meaning "I got it" or "finished the task"），他们老师听完就笑了，并告诉他们，this is said by women when they get pregnant（这是女人在怀孕时说的）。They had a good laugh about it.
