Since we began TalkCXOLife series around three years ago, it’s been our endeavour to get you stories celebrating the smallest joys which when nurtured, grow to yield a treasure trove of happiness. This is a bonus segment of our conversation with Rajesh Saluja, CEO & Managing Partner, ASK Wealth Advisors. Now, if you have listened to the full conversation we had with Rajesh so far, you will know that this veteran financial advisor consulting several HNIs, is a rare mix of eternal optimism and solid pragmatism, which is why we think you ought to listen to this bonus segment which is on a matter of universal interest – wealth, better yet, on how to increase it. Rajesh shares basic, simple tenets of investing within the India context, importance of staying systematically invested in equities and in other well-regulated investment products and doing so, responsibly. We need to mention here that though this conversation was recorded some months ago, Rajesh maintains the views he had shared with us even currently, when Indian markets are off their peaks by a whopping 30% amidst these very trying and uncertain circumstances, prevailing globally. Rajesh believes in staying invested, being focussed on the long-term to unlock the power of compounding, the eighth wonder of the world as Albert Einstein put it, and that patience is the key to getting lucky. The International Women’s Day – celebrated worldwide every year on March 8th has come a long way over the century – from women demanding the right to vote to women currently excelling in every field, shattering glass ceilings, leading some of the largest conglomerates to being the epitome of balancing and managing it all – home, career, personal interests. But how do they really do it? How far do we still need to go? Is it even possible to have an added dimension personally and excel at it? We think we got some marvellous insights through our conversations we had with some stellar women CXOs. So, here’s a compilation of three feisty women, one who has run the distance of the earth and may soon be on her way to run it twice over – and she has headed some of the largest fintech organisations. Another went on from being a preschool teacher to being regarded as among the foremost K12 leaders in India and drew much strength from meditation through this rollercoaster journey and yet another, a distinguished Marketing veteran who went on to become a Masterchef Singapore finalist, starting an Indian supper club based on Maharashtrian-Bengali cuisine with her CXO husband. Seeing pink already? Well it’s about time, we say – the Sky Is Pink – Well it very well could be. Watch out! We bring to you the remarkable example of Vaishali Kasture, who is part of the Amazon Web Services India Core Leadership Team. She was also the India Country Head at Experian and has headed stellar organisations such as L&T Financial Services, Goldman Sachs, Deloitte India, Infosys BPO, Citibank etc. Vaishali, also a mother and a canine-lover, spoke with us on balancing a high-pressure career and personal commitments apart from following a passion ardently – Vaishali is the first Indian woman to have run all the world major marathons and to think she took to running in her thirties! We bring to you excerpts of our conversation wherein she shares how running above all else, helped her get more honest with herself and gain clarity of what she wants out of life. We also spoke of the challenges women continue to face in a largely patriarchal society and corporate culture, and how it is indeed possible for a woman to taste success on her terms, and append an additional dimension - a dimension only for her to cherish. Priya Barve, Head of BrandLab, APAC at Google, wears many hats. One such is of a Masterchef! This creative marketing executive also runs a supper club in Singapore, The Bombay Howrah Dining Car, celebrating Maharashtrian and Bengali cuisine. She along with her equally prolific husband, Aniruddha Ganguly, CEO and Co-Founder at Negobot, have hosted several guests. In my conversation with them, Priya spoke about how she began cooking, her takeaways from participating in Masterchef. Humour is a constant companion throughout this conversation. We also elicit amusing reactions of her colleagues when they came to know of her aspirations. Priya shares how she has sought learning, challenges and growth rather than designations to guide her when she chose the organisations she worked with and how success to her is an accumulation of experiences and she hopes to continue to do so. Lina Ashar, Founder of Kangaroo Kids Preschool and Billabong High International School shared some enriching insights into understanding the human mind, what it means of being in the business of tapping a being’s utmost potential. Her journey from being a preschool teacher, starting with a single preschool in Bandra West to an acknowledged K12 chain, arguably the foremost to bring forth the concept of ‘learning is fun’ , is inspiring. In my conversation Lina speaks how meditation provided her the right compass to give her a sense of reality – one which enables one to tell stories correctly, in a more peaceful manner, approaching it through love rather than fear. She speaks about how the power of meaning and purpose is well within the reach of everyone and the futility of dependin…

Padmakar shares how this initiative, even within such a short span, opened an entirely different perspective and dimension of viewing and bonding with their fellow colleagues whilst also introducing the concept to their industry members, which they took to, rather spontaneously and enthusiastically. 1 11: Padmakar Kappagantula - Part 1/6 – Establishing talent-based employee communities for inspiration & bonding 14:37
It is 2020 and what better way to kickstart it than by showcasing a brilliant way an organization went about in building passion-based communities for all its employees, taking the concept of work-life balance to a different level altogether. And this, Our very own Bharat Petroleum Corporation! Here's presenting a lovely conversation Sunayana Nair had with Mr. Padmakar Kappagantula, HR Director at Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd. on setting up talent-based employee communities for inspiring employees, enhancing the ease of communication across ranks, job functions, and team building. In this first segment, Padmakar shares how the idea of building passion-based communities within BPCL as an attempt to motivate and inspire employees, cutting ranks, divisions areas of expertise and location came about. Padmakar shares how scourging through several surveys and his own experience made him initiate conversations with people across levels to understand what got them going especially when the going got tough and how pursuing that passion might actually assist them get over performance blocks that people experience differently and at various points in time. Thus sprung the idea of developing individuals from the Howard Gardner's multiple intelligence theory perspective. iPassion was rolled out over a year ago to let the 12000 employees at BPCL across ranks, gender, location know that their passion matters as much to the organization they worked for as much as it should matter to them! Isn’t that wonderful? He shares how solitary operators in the company primarily in sales, who had no one to connect to or appreciate their finer aspects, now do! And how it resulted in ease of communication between employees, fellow colleagues who discovered similar interests cutting across hierarchies to form the now 700-plus members of iPassion. Padmakar also shares the challenges that his team grappled with initially and how it is now about getting more and more people onboard as they look forward to taking this platform to everyone’s smartphone so that it is more accessible and convenient to connect, share and bond! This is the highlights section of our conversation with Prashant Mehta, Partner at Lightbox. Don’t forget to listen to the full conversation – https://cxolife.com/prashant-mehta-lightbox-on-endurance-sports-biking-ironman-trekking-and-million-dollar-ideas/
Hey, you are listening to talkcxolife and in this edition, we will be conversing with Prashant Mehta, Partner at Lightbox, a venture capital firm in Mumbai. Now Prashant is also known as the endurance man. Why you ask? Imagine pedaling from Mumbai to Pune and back, that is about 330km, for 13 hours, and (no don’t run out of breath as yet) then within the same week of pulling off that feat, trekking to the Everest basecamp! Well, that is Prashant Mehta for you ladies and gentlemen! So hold on as we begin unraveling this intriguing story of Prashant across various fronts. Born in Mumbai, and having spent his growing years between India and Africa, Prashant studied biotechnology in the U.S. but ended up working for a bank, pursuing an MBA from Wharton School after which he headed straight to work for Lehman Brothers which helped him understand the art of investing in emerging markets. He subsequently moved to Silicon Valley to head Yahoo’s commercial operations for emerging markets. It was this move to California that also fortified his love for the mountains and he began studying and researching various aspects of trekking and mountaineering. His zest for testing his endurance too culminated in California, twenty years ago, when Prashant was grappling with some critical health issues. His then boss and friend egged him on to take to biking as a way to reboot his system. What started as a way to distract his mind and get fit soon became an obsession to push his limits, which Prashant himself hadn’t anticipated. Soon, Prashant began participating in various races and events across the US and other countries. It soon graduated to participating in triathlons and then came the half Ironman. A noteworthy interesting pattern, that emerges from his story as most of the other CXOs I have interviewed is also a strong presence of ‘the tribe’. An equally, if not more, enthusiastic bunch of friends who goad you on to do things, however out of reason or out of bounds it may seem, but doing them nevertheless and doing it together. And yet, if anything, there is hardly any pattern in his story excepting that of episodic, erratic moves including Prashant’s move from the US to Mumbai to head an advertising technology startup for 5 years before he surprised himself yet again and became a venture capitalist. And now here’s some great news, weeks ago, Prashant completed his Turkey half ironman that involves a 1.9 km swim, 90 km bike and a 21k run in 6.45 hours about 37 minutes better than his last attempt about three years ago. So here’s cheering for him and his gang of boys who call themselves the Worli 5.45. True to their style days after which, his gang of friends biked along the Turkey coast! Among the very many crazy things up their sleeve is an inspiring K2K (Kashmir to Kanyakumari) bike ride, which will be a second marvelous attempt at raising charity for children suffering from terminal and critical illness. The previous one was a non-stop Delhi to Mumbai ride through which Prashant and his team raised and donated Rs. 3.5 crores towards the same cause. And then there is the Full Ironman which Prashant is targeting after the K2K. Ah alright, I hear you, let’s get going already! But hey, as if this wasn’t already good enough we also captured the venture capitalist in him, sharing his insights on recognizing wealth-generating business ideas and more importantly people potential and of course his philosophy on success and work-life balance. Don’t forget to stay tuned for the CXO Funfacts segment at the end of the conversation wherein you’ll know of Prashant’s unusual fixations, fears, his favorite food and why Orange is indeed the new Black. Happy listening!…

In this concluding segment, we chat up on work-life balance, Prashant’s take on success and life’s unpredictable twists and turns. According to Prashant, having flexibility in life to figure out and pursue what one wants to, is what work-life balance is all about. He believes he will consider himself successful when he will be able to get up in the morning and do what he wants to do, that day, rather than having to follow a schedule and though he is fortunate like most to have that freedom on most days, he hasn’t been able to really act on it as often as he thinks he ought to. Prashant states that The ‘Never stop learning’ attitude is the legacy he would like to bestow his three wonderful daughters with. Happy Listening!…

He subsequently moved to Silicon Valley to head Yahoo’s commercial operations for emerging markets. In this segment, you’ll get to know of the crazy bike rides Prashant and his team have undertaken. The first such major ride was from Bombay to Pune and back. After just 6 weeks of training, Prashant and two of his friends endured a 13-hour road journey and kept pedalling away even as Prashant started feeling delusional midway due to exhaustion. Soon after the completion of this trip, Prashant trekked to the Everest basecamp and describes this as the craziest two weeks of his life. Another crazy ride was a non-stop Delhi Bombay ride with a targeted time of 60 hours which his gang manged to pull off in spite of the several challenges they faced and learned from. Prashant speaks of how these charity bike rides bordering on insanity are made possible when it is the heart which switches the gear during the trying times. For Prashant, a cause or a mission motivates him to push his limits much more than wanting to ace a timing or attain a desired speed.…

1 34: Vivek Bhargava, CEO, DAN Performance Group on Table Tennis, Chess, Happiness - Full conversation 1:09:50
Vivek Bhargava, CEO, DAN Performance Group heads the digital performance agencies of the reputed Dentsu Aegis Network. Vivek has been on this digital journey since 1997 when he commenced his venture Communicate2 to help Indian companies communicate better having observed the medium’s gradual but gripping impact in the US on his family trips and as a young student. From a time when digital meant at the most having an add-on CD to a corporate brochure to now when it is omnipresent, the journey has been a promising one for Vivek, who is regarded as among the top digital minds in India today. And if anything makes for as enthralling a story is Vivek’s passion for table tennis, a sport he picked up as a seven-year-old when his family suddenly shifted to Mussoorie, a beautiful hill station in Dehradun, India. Vivek took to the sport passionately and went on to play several state tournaments. What may come as a surprise to many though is that Vivek had taken a complete break from playing TT for the 15 years he led Communicate2 until its acquisition by Dentsu Aegis in 2012. Around the same time, an old friend who had come over from the US challenged Vivek to a match and since then, Vivek hasn’t looked back from working on his game. Vivek went on to not only play table tennis regularly but also went on to compete at the national level. He has won a bronze in the 30-plus-age category and a silver in the doubles. He credits his quick comeback to the thorough training he received as a child. Vivek is also committed to improve the visibility of the sport in the country and also owns a table tennis team, Challengers, in the Ultimate Table Tennis League - a professional level table tennis league in India contested by 6 teams. His team had qualified till the finals in the inaugural 2017 season and very recently, about two months ago in the 3rd season of the UTT League had made it to the semi-finals. And if you think this is about it, hold on. Vivek is also an avid chess player and an amateur paragliding pilot. He is also learning the art of standup comedy and has performed a couple of routines. He believes learning to make people laugh especially in his vocation can be of tremendous help. Well, I must admit I had a ball recording this conversation even as Vivek spooked me with some mentalism tricks he had just learned! There were so many aspects which we spoke about at length that this has been one of the toughest conversations to edit considering there’s only so much we can pack – so make the most of it! In this full conversation Vivek delves on his formative years, the critical and indelible influence his father has had on him, his relocation to Mumbai in the 9th grade which he regards as a key milestone, his entrepreneurial journey, his philosophies on happiness, life, sports, leadership, his passions – primarily table tennis and chess, his penchant for learning something new every quarter, topped with some rather interesting facts about Vivek including an app which he uses to meditate and swears by. And all of this is served with hearty doses of laughter. Now with a future standup comedian in tow, we wouldn’t have had it any other way, right? 1 18: Full Conversation - Rajen Prabhu, Sr. Director, Large MNC Singapore: From Fat to Fit to Ironman | Quizzing & comedy 1:01:50
Hey! you are listening to TalkCXOLIfe and this time we are presenting this amazing journey of the cool and persistent Rajen Prabhu, aka Sumo – as known to his friends and family. While the moniker Sumo was bestowed upon Rajen decades ago at the IIT Madras campus by a senior as campus tradition demands it, Rajen, who is Sr. Director at a large fintech MNC in Singapore, is anything but the huge 120-kg guy that he had been for a major part of his life! Well, physically at least! In his conversation with Sunayana Nair, Editor CXO Life, Rajen confesses to still having a fat man living inside of him – an intricate part of him in which has shaped his perspectives, his attitude of keeping it light and simple and his hunger for testing his limits which he isn’t ready to part with as yet. And quite understandably so! For a guy to have just completed his first Ironman-equivalent triathlon, Challenge Roth in Bavaria this July within 8 years of embarking upon his fitness journey, Rajen is remarkably casual about his form and believes that preparation is the key to ace any challenge. Interestingly enough Rajen believes his journey has been laced with humor and it had inspired him enough to combine it with his love for quizzing and invent a unique standup routine act crossing comedy and quizzing – an experiment which had its fair share of audience in the rotary clubs in Chennai though he is yet to position it successfully in Singapore. This conversation is inspiring in that it encapsulates the impermanence of the labels we attach to ourselves, be it self-construed or given by others – if we are willing to extend ourselves beyond those familiar terrains and give a chance to rediscover ourselves daily! So ready to listen to this refreshingly candid talk with Rajen? Strap it on! Happy listening!…

In this segment, Rajen speaks on Work-life balance and how bringing about that harmony has been possible largely due to a motivating organisational culture and an encouraging boss. Though work always comes first for Rajen he shares how it is possible to pragmatically weave in passion with gruelling ambition by being mindful. He shares how success is about being able to enjoy work and have people who mean something to you, respect you be it at work and home. Among all things, it is Rajen’s persistence which has surprised him especially since he considered himself to be the guy who would walk away from something if it seemed too hard. Looking back, Rajen is surprised how he persisted with those countless hours in the swimming pool unable to swim more than 10 metres! Going forward, Rajen wants to hold on to the sense of gratitude for what he has, retain his sense of humour when things go wrong and would like the understanding to prevail that wellbeing is physical and mental and how one can’t put a price on being healthy. Happy Listening!…
In this segment, Rajen takes us through his first love of quizzing and introduces us to his once-cherished dream of becoming a standup comedian. Rajen shares how he had tasted a ‘modicum of success’ in Chennai rotary clubs where he found himself an enthusiastic audience among middle-aged women who would fawn over his standup routines which were a mix of quizzing and comedy. Though the move to Singapore resulted in a cooling down of this passion, Rajen still hopes to fan it alive someday especially with his inner Sumo within constantly goading him to view life in all its splendid humor. Rajen also shares his views on the current Indian standup comedy scene and how it has come a long way from mimicry and narrating jokes out of a book. Happy Listening!…

In this segment, Rajen takes us through his journey into fitness with his move to Singapore in 2011 as a senior executive with Mastercard. He shares how he chanced upon the concept of triathlons, having casually signed up for one such on a vacation to Phuket in 2013 and though he felt that he would ‘die at various points in the event’ he was hooked on to it at the end and wanted to carry on testing his limits even as he sat in an ice tub trying to help his body recover from the shock of having endured the race. It was The Metasprint series in Singapore, however, which helped him approach the triathlon in a methodical manner which was key to help him approach the sport systematically and eventually see them as fun. He shares how he loves biking and how he struggled with swimming having learnt it only five-six years ago but persisted anyway. Rajen now looks forward to his training which is engineered seamlessly within his daily schedule. Now what is really interesting is that they took to running for different reasons and also view running very differently but what is common is the passion for strapping on those shoes and hitting the road with a vengeance. We are proud to present the dynamic Vaishali Kasture the first Indian woman to have completed all the six major world marathons. She has over 25 years of banking and financial services and was until very recently the MD and country head at Experian. She is the co-founder of Sonder Connect. Listen to this leader, marathoner and mother share how 24 hours are good enough to slay it in the boardroom, at home and on the road! We are delighted to have with us once again, Venkatesh Maheshwari, Sr VP at Aditya Birla Fashions and Retail who is also an avid mountaineer and has the distinct accomplishment of climbing the Everest last year. While Venkatesh has participated in several marathons, he hadn’t been able to push himself for a full marathon until now to safeguard himself from any possible injury which would have deterred his dream of conquering that peak. Listen to Venkatesh share how it is all about getting past the first 2 km to discover the true joy of running. We are excited to welcome Atul Daga, CFO, Ultratech Cement Now Atul‘s running journey is quite unique. Though he has been running the marathon since the very second year the Marathon was launched in 2004, Atul plunged into half marathon from the third year onwards and has kept the tempo going since then, participating in almost every half-marathons across the country and a few in Asia as well. Atul shares with us how his early morning run gives him peace of mind, how it is okay to not really want to keep upping the game as long as one is enjoying oneself and how there are plenty of places to run in Mumbai if one rises early!…

1 1: Venkatesh Maheshwari Sr. VP Aditya Birla Fashions on climbing Mount Everest, work life balance, management lessons 43:42
A brand new year has begun and amidst this resolution-making, goal-setting season we couldn’t think of getting to you’ll a better story than the inspiring journey of this gentleman who scaled the highest peak at the age of 46 whilst being at the peak of his career too. But hey age is just a number to Venkatesh Maheshwari, Sr. Vice President at Aditya Birla Fashion who made headlines last year when he climbed Mount Everest, becoming arguably the first Indian corporate leader to have done so. Even though mountains fascinated Venkatesh since childhood and he began trekking in his early 20s, for a middle-class lad who had grown up in the suburbs of Mumbai in a traditionally pragmatic financial-oriented Marwari community, the childhood dream of climbing the Everest seemed within grasp only after having done several treks to the base camp of Everest. And when it did, it consumed him with such a sense of urgency and temerity that it took a gruelling 18-month training ingrained within his daily regime to help him realise his dream. We bring to you this awesome tale of grit, perseverance, passion and even mysticism in two parts – in the first, we get to know Venkatesh, his philosophy and aspirations and in the second we will dive deep into his entire journey and experience. So, get set. We get you enough motivation to show you how a detailed, structured, methodic plan goes a long way into conquering that peak you have chosen for yourself! Remember! It is never too late to Identify and Seek your Everest! Happy Listening!…

1 4: Paul Bradley, Chairman & CEO Caprica International on Mentorship, Collecting & Investing in Art, Travelling, Reading 54:40
Have you ever seen a white tiger? Not only is it extremely rare – It occurs as few as 1 in 10000 wild tiger births – but it would be impossible to not notice one! Now hang on.. no we do not have a wildlife conservationist as our next guest but the white tiger is what he associates himself with. And an encounter with Paul Bradley, Chairman and CEO at Caprica International is definitely one that you won't forget. As an American based out of Singapore and having donned leadership roles across American, Japanese, Chinese and Indian companies spanning 14 countries – Paul is an eclectic blend of the West and East. We met Paul at his tastefully decorated high-rise condo in the historic Tanjong Pagar district Singapore, overlooking at one side the tallest building in Singapore whilst the ocean at the other. Needless to say, his lovely apartment was filled with paintings, sculptures, relics, memorabilia, resembling a mini-museum colourfully depicting a legacy crafted from Paul’s varied culturally enriched experiences, as an Art investor’s would probably be. But, what was interesting was the strategic placement of each of those murals and paintings, with even the placement of the lights of the corridor matching philosophically a lovely painting - “The Path” - profoundly depicting a group of Buddhist monks on a journey. As a well-read and well-travelled leader, it isn’t surprising when Paul shares with us tales of his travails across the world and the art that draws him in with his penchant for history. However, what was fascinating was the ease with which Paul recounted the places he visited or the personalities he met or dwelled upon the reason he picked an art – like it happened just a few moments ago, as if it were happening right now! So don't blame us if you get gripped by wanderlust after listening to this one! Happy listening!…
