我們沒有過去。當下的感受,就是即將發生的未來。我們的世界裡,不存在「過去」,我們並不是受過去發生的事情所支配的,而是藉由「如何定義」那些事,來決定我們的人生的。不論過去發生什麼事情,我們都沒有辦法決定什麼,而且,過去是不是有創傷,也跟現在沒有關係。因為,人不是受過去的「經歷」而活著的,卻是循著現在的「目的」在過日子。那些說出「因為過去家庭環境不好,所以導致性格灰暗」的人,是在說人生的謊言。因為,是我們在心裡先有「不想與他人有瓜葛」的目的,才會選擇不必與任何人有瓜葛的「灰暗性格」,然後,我們再把「過去的家庭環境」拿出來,當成自己選擇此種性格的藉口。其實,我們並不是那種任由過去的創傷擺布,脆弱不堪的個體。「個體心理學」的創始人阿德勒說「人,無論何時,都能決定自我」。不論在任何時候,我們都是一個可以決定自我的個體,可以選擇嶄新的自己,沒有任何藉口。只是,儘管如此,我們還是相當難以改變自我,為什麼呢?因為,改變現狀,就跟死了一樣痛苦。於是,人們不想試圖去改變,總要「照現在這個樣子,就好」。我們的心智,總是習慣性地否定和抗拒當下,常常,我們有無止境的牽掛過去,擔憂未來,就是不願意接受和承認當下,我們不允許當下,如其所是。然而,當下才是我們所能擁有的全部啊!
永恆的當下,就是我們生命得以展開的全部空間。沒有事情,是發生在過去的,事情只發生在「當下」。也沒有事情,是發生在未來的,事情只發生在「當下」。未來和過去並不存在,他們的力量和真實性都是藉著「當下」來的,就像月亮本身不會發光,只能反射太陽。人生就是當下,也只有當下。我們的人生,雖存在於時間當中,但是,我們的生命,卻只存在於當下。我們可以問自己:我在做某件事時,有感到喜悅、輕鬆、自在嗎?如果沒有,表示我們沒有活在當下,活好當下,感覺生命是種負擔或挑戰。一旦我們接納當下,立刻,我們所有不愉快或勉強的感受,就會消散。生命的喜悅和自在,就會開始流動,我們即刻就會感到臨在、寧靜與平安。
不管我們做什麼事,抱持負面能量所做的事,都會受到汙染,假以時日,只會產生更多的痛苦、不快樂。此外,不快樂的情緒,比身體疾病,更容易傳染別人,透過共振,更會激發及餵養人的負面性。所以,我們要養成自我觀察的習慣,隨時監測自己的情緒狀態。我們要經常問自己:「這一刻,我安適、自在嗎?」臨在的能力是很強的,無論做什麼事,我們都要讓自己充滿喜悅和活力,就像在玩遊戲一樣,不要患得患失,不要恐懼、憤怒或不滿。
形相是有生有滅的,但是,我們要超越形相,在形相之外,看見永恆。我們要安住在身體裡 (inhabit the body),從內在去感受身體,體認自己是超越外在形相的存在。當我們將注意力從思想轉移到身體時,而且很專注地去感受我們的內在身體,我們就會大大減緩身體老化的速度,即使人終將變老,但我們內在的身體,卻能透過外在形相發光,讓我們看起來更年輕。此外,內在身體也可強化我們的免疫系統,讓我們身體的免疫力增強,讓我們的每個細胞,清醒過來,歡欣鼓舞,達到非常有效的自癒能力。我們每天起床後,和入睡前,都可以平躺著,閉上眼睛,把注意力放在每一個身體的部位,譬如手、腳、腹部、胸膛或頭部等,我們要深深地去感受身體部位所蘊含的生命能量。當我們全神貫注地臨在於全身的每一個細胞時,我們就可以定錨於當下,不再迷失於外在世界中。我們可以養成一個習慣,只要遇到困難或逆境,就立刻將注意力轉到自己身體的內在,只要幾秒鐘就夠了。我們要在困境出現的剎那,立即行動,不要有一點點拖延,讓我們慣性的「心裡—情緒」升起。奇妙的是,當我們專注於內在身體時,我們立刻就會感受到寂靜和臨在。
哈佛心理實驗室統計,人類有99%的憂慮,是沒有必要的!其中,40%的憂慮是對未來的擔心,30%是對過去的事情懊悔,22%的煩惱,是生活中微不足道的小事。眾所周知,我們其實每一個人,看起來都非常擔憂,都有無法放下,不可控制的事情,即便是再成功的人,也有他們的痛苦,沒有人是完美的,大家都有自己的功課要修。但是,我們也都知道,很多事情,擔心也無用,我們能控制的,也只有自己而已。當我們控制自己當下的情緒與想法時,上天就會給我們能量,讓我們學會尊重別人的選擇,選擇自己的命運。「當下」不能只是這一秒,而是正在發生的情緒感受。要放下過去的煩事,捨棄未來的擔憂,把全部的精神,集中在現在的這一刻this moment,很不容易,我們一定要靜下心來,屏除所有的干擾,才能看清真正的走向。賈伯斯(Steve Jobs)常問自己,「如果今天是我人生的最後一天,我仍然會做我當下正在做的事嗎?」如果人生無常,我們就該過好今天,不要擔心,好好處理關係與情緒,認真過好此時此刻this moment,接受今天,好好過完今天,當下快樂就快樂,當下痛苦就痛苦。如果我們每時每刻,都扮演好當下的身份,無愧於當下的自己,真的就已經很棒了!
The present moment is a place of control, ease, and happiness. Our ability to be happy in the here and now is influenced by our present thoughts. Rather, we must be present with our experiences, and then, we will see how it changes our emotional states.
In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to get distracted by to-do lists, projects, and deadlines, so much so that we may forget to enjoy the simple things in life. We, simply, have to give gratitude for the air that we breathe, and our ability to walk. These, actually, are wildly important things to our survival, but yet so many people ignore their value on a daily basis. The world is forever changing, which is why it’s so important to appreciate the here and now. We cannot get moments back, so we need to be grateful for everything. When life gets overwhelming, it’s natural for us to reach for negative emotions because we don’t feel good. In fact, the real happiness isn’t something large, but something small, numerous and already there. For example, the smile of someone we love, a decent breakfast, and the warm sunset, etc. are so precious to us. Nowadays, sometimes, the best way to reconnect with ourselves is to get away with our technology. Although cellphone’s intention is to connect us, but we can see how many people are glued to their phones, instead of talking to the person that is in front of them. Furthermore, a lot of people use the digital world as a means of escaping from their problems, so much so that it becomes an addiction in and of itself. We are in the here and now. The past is over and done with. Something that no longer exists cannot affect us anymore. If we continue to dwell upon the pain and challenges that we’ve experienced, we will only create more of the same experiences in the future. By releasing the heaviness of the past, it will allow us to be more present in our mind, body, and soul. Actually, our breath is the simplest and most powerful way to stay in the here and now. When we take a deep breath now, and see how it feels, it’s a great reminder that everything is going to be okay. Then, our lives just only consist of a series of present moments. In the words of Steve Goodier (a minister and author), “Wherever you are, be there. If you can be fully present now, you’ll know what it means to live.” Now is the time to own it.
Way of the Peaceful Warrior by Dan Millman is based in a true story, combined with fiction, romance, adventure and life lessons. The book begins with the first year of college of Dan, at Berkeley in California. Dan has been a champion gymnast, who wants to be part of the Olympics; always getting great grades; in shape, attractive and popular; and with a wealthy family, but still is something missing in his life. Everything started one night in which Dan wakes up in the middle of the night because of a nightmare he is having. Unable to go back to sleep, he goes to take a walk to a nearby gas station. When he arrives at the gas station, he sees an old man who is a wise man to teach him lessons. He learns to have a better control of emotions and any situations in life. The famous quotations:
“Where are you? … HERE”
“What time is it? … NOW”
“What are you? … THIS MOMENT.” (Millman 170)
express that in order to become a better version of ourselves, it is necessary to be able to accept here and now. There are no ordinary moments. Every moment is so cherished and extraordinary. Everything around us is always happening, and there is always beauty in everything. We have to do what we love, and find love in what we do. Life is the journey, not the destination. Our lives are the journey we take, and each discovery is the truth of the journey. Each action or inaction, become part of our steps. We become the journey, and the sooner we realize that, the more beautiful our lives become.
