It was the deadliest string of shark attacks the world has ever seen. In 2011, sharks in Réunion, a beautiful island, way out in the Indian Ocean started biting people way more than ever before and with lunatic violence. The epidemic forced local surfers, politicians, and business owners into a proxy war with ocean lovers and conservationists worldwide, where long simmering tensions boiled over. Réunion: Shark Attacks in Paradise is the story of what happened on this beautiful island, and t ...

The concept of "remote work" is not a new idea by any means - people have been working remote for decades. There was never any controversy over this small group of people working from home "telecommuting." It's just been over the past ten years when both technology and the pandemic thrust tens of millions of people into an entirely new work environment with no nearly zero guardrails. Companies had no idea how to structure their policies around an entirely remote workforce, so they winged it. Employees had no guidelines for how to manage their focus, time, and professionalism, so they learned on the fly. Now, we are coming out of the "trial by fire" phase and are taking stock on what worked well, what worked poorly, and where to go from here. Wayne Turmel has been studying, writing, and training people/organizations on how to create effective remote work structures since the beginning. In this episode, Wayne discusses: The near and long-term future of remote work. The problems with adapting to a fully remote work life. How companies need to adapt. Job boards give you the illusion that there are more job opportunities than actually exist. If you hop on LinkedIn or a remote job board you'll find hundreds and sometimes thousands of job listings depending on the role you're looking for. The problem is that about 50% of them are "ghost listings", meaning the role isn't real. And of the job listings that are real, each posting will get hundreds of applicants. With so many candidates applying for so few actual positions, how do you stand out from the crowd? Unfortunately, the answer is not a numbers game. Sending hundreds of applications each week will not increase your odds of getting hired. You're just adding more noise and wasting your time. In this episode Marisa explains how to dramatically increase your response rate and get to the interview stage. She explains exactly how to increase quality over quantity to maximize your chances of landing the job. And if you are looking for help understanding which direction you should go with your career so that you can work remote as a digital nomad, Marisa is hosting a career clarity workshop. Sign up today to get pointed in the right direction and maximize your odds of getting hired. https://beachcommute.samcart.com/products/careerclaritylive…

Elliot Rosenberg has mastered "travel hacking", a strategy for getting deals on flights and accommodations at a fraction of their cost. There is a small world of people who understand travel hacking, and are able to travel in luxury everywhere they go in the world. In this episode, Elliot explains 1. Rosie Bell is an amazing example of someone who felt trapped working in an office every day, but had the courage to take a leap of faith and realize her dream of travel and location independence. Rosie is now a freelance writer and location independence mentor & author of Escape to Self. Rosie has been featured on Forbes, National Geographic, Huffington Post and many others. Many of you can relate! She's now been fully remote for over a decade! She initially found her new "home" in Panama, where she fell in love with the lifestyle and the people. Beach Commute has launched a database of 300+ fully-remote companies that let you work from anywhere! This is the result of 3+ years of filtering through tens of thousands of companies from remote job boards, LinkedIn, and Beach Commute's personal and professional networks. Only about 1% of remote job listings you find on job boards ACTUALLY let you work from anywhere. Each company goes through a rigorous review and rating criteria by Beach Commute experts to ensure that each company in the database is 100% work from anywhere and will be an awesome place to work. Along with requirements to be a "work from anywhere organization", each company listing is also rated and contains key information on a few critical factors: Employee perks: Laptops, unlimited PTO, 4 day work weeks, etc. Peer reviews: What employees are actually saying about working for the company. Company culture: The type of environment the company fosters for its employees. How much do they care about their employees?! Most people assume that they can get a remote job by directly applying to job listings they find on job boards. It’s VERY rare that people actually get jobs this way. The majority of the time these job applications get lost in the abyss of hundreds of applications. As a matter of fact, if your application DOES get looked at, the average amount of time a recruiter will spend on it is 6 seconds. 6 seconds is all you get! You need to completely reframe the way you think about getting a job to maximize your odds of getting a job. In this episode Jeff and Marisa walk you through a technique that will optimize the likelihood of getting hired. Hint: The best way to get hired at a fully remote company is by following companies rather than chasing individual job listings. And the best way to do that is finding companies that truly give you the freedom to travel anywhere while you work. Fortunately, Beach Commute has spent 3+ years tracking down the very best companies in the world to work from. Beach Commute has launched a fully filterable database (called the Anywhere Atlas) of 300+ awesome companies, rated by four important factors: Peer reviews - how people who actually work for the company feel about working with them. Remote work culture - how much the company embraces a fully-remote work style. Employee perks - the benefits the companies offer like 4 day weeks, laptops, medical coverage, etc. Company culture - the type of positive environment management fosters for employees. Return to office (RTO) mandates are here, and the reasons for implementing them are either poor, or outright lies. You're being told that RTO is to "increase productivity" and "foster a sense of community", when they just finished bragging about how effective, flexible and communicative teams had been mid-pandemic. Some even bragged about how much more efficient their teams were running. What's with the about-face change in tone? They're talking out of two sides of their mouth. They tell you that you'll be more productive in the office (everyone, regardless of job scope, personality or work style), but that's not the real reason they want you to come back in. There are ulterior motives that are driving these mandates. Jeff and Marisa explain the reasons why companies are trying to pull a fast one on their employees and provide some facts on how to refute those claims. If your company is implementing an RTO policy, we would love to hear from you at: hello@beachcommute.com.…

Remote job boards are a mirage, full stop. With the thousands of "remote jobs" listed daily, you might think that your opportunities for getting a remote job are limitless. But it's 100% fool's gold. Once you start applying for jobs, you'll see that just finding legitimate listings is a job unto itself. For starters, over half of job listings online are fake. Yeah, you read that right. If you've applied to remote jobs online, chances are you've submitted your personal information to someone harvesting data. And if you do manage to find a legitimate listing from a company that isn't harvesting your data, there is a high likelihood that the listing isn't fully remote, meaning you can't work as a digital nomad. In the fine print you'll see that most "remote" jobs are limited to a very specific geography, like a specific city, state or timezone. Otherworldly: Relating to an imaginary or spiritual world. One of the many, many benefits of being a digital nomad is that you sometimes end up in places that look like a completely different planet. These are places where you have to pinch yourself, because you're looking at landscapes that you have only seen in movies, or your dreams. These locations aren't often the places where people live and work as digital nomads, but rather nearby destinations that you travel through on mini adventures. They're usually so far off the beaten path that you'll never be able to access them with the typical two week travel vacation. Marisa, Jeff and Diego have been to dozens of otherworldly places in their travels as digital nomads. In this episode they share their top 10 locations. Some of the locations they discuss are: The Skeleton Coast in Namibia. The Rainbow Mountains in Peru. The salt flats in Bolivia. The Wahiba desert in Oman If you're an adventurer at heart, this episode is the ultimate bucket list guide for you. We help people like you find legitimate remote jobs every day! People of all ages are embracing the digital nomad lifestyle around the world. But perhaps the biggest hurdle to kicking off this lifestyle is getting a fully remote job that lets you travel the world while you work. And there may be subtle biases during the hiring process that you need to be aware of. Legally, hiring managers are not allowed to discriminate against any applicant based on age. But, we don’t live in a perfect world, and implicit biases exist, whether we like it or not. In this episode, Marisa discusses the specific ways hiring managers may disqualify your application based on your age. Marisa then walks you through practical steps you can take to ensure that your age does NOT become a factor during the hiring practice. Ideally you wouldn’t need these techniques, but the reality is that this is something we have to deal with. Using these specific tactics you will learn how to ensure that your age is not a factor, and you get hired based on your qualifications and merit. Possibly the biggest benefit of being a digital nomad is the opportunity to go on once-in-a-lifetime weekend trips, every week. Digital nomads typically spend their Monday through Fridays working a semi-regular work schedule. Outside work hours people will often go on mini-adventures: Finding hot new restaurants, hiking, going on tours, etc. On the weekends digital nomads often go on BIG adventures to nearby locations. You could spend the week working in Florence, and the weekend driving through the hillsides of Tuscany, trying amazing new food and wine. Or you could spend the week working in a cafe in Bali, and the weekend taking a boat on island adventures. You could work in San Cristobal, Mexico and go on a rock jumping, waterfall rappelling adventure in the jungle. The one thing all of these cool locations have in common are that you would likely NEVER see these places if you weren't living and working nearby as a digital nomad. They are so far removed from the beaten path that you simply would never manage to see these places on a normal 1-2 week vacation from the office. 1 Business owner empowering employees to work where and when they want w/Dmitrii Kustov | Ep 93 42:06
Dmitrii founded a fully remote marketing agency that allows its employees to work wherever in the world they want. Even more revolutionary - he allows his employees to work their own schedule that best suits their lives. This “freedom of work” system maximizes employee happiness, productivity, and quality of work. Dmitrii started RegexSEO as a physical office based out of Houston, Texas. After covid he had to decide whether they: go back to the office, create a hybrid system, or go fully remote. As a business owner, it was much cheaper to run his company remote, AND even more importantly, his employees were enjoying their lives more. He realized that “the only un-renewable resource is time.” He wants to create a world in which every working professional has enough time to do what’s important to them, whether that be travel, spending time with family and friends, or simply working at a pace that best suits them. His company also gives “recharge days” every month designed for employees to get some headspace and come back to work rested and inspired. Lastly they have a yearly meetup somewhere in the world where they get to see each other and collaborate. Dmitrii realizes that employees are happier and more productive when they can work on their own schedule. So, he fully entrusts his employees to “get their job done” on the schedule that best suits their needs. So that means if you’re a morning person, you can work early and quit early. If you’re a night person, you can start late and finish late. If you hate afternoons, you can take a mental break for a few hours after lunch. As a bonus in this episode, Dmitrii talks about how he is going to manage the logistics of traveling as a parent. Many parents feel that they can’t be a digital nomad, but Dmitrii explains how very possible the concept is. RegexSEO is expanding rapidly, so make sure you take a look at their current job listings. https://apply.workable.com/regexseocareers/#jobs After you listen in, make sure that you check out our Remote Travel Jobs Daily membership! Co-founder Jeff has had a lifelong background in dealing with mental health issues, in particular, OCD. Jeff explains in detail how OCD and depression occur in the brain, and what feeds them. He explains how these disorders hijack the brain and can cause debilitating mental and physical effects. He talks about his experience in modern psychotherapy and how western medicine turned his “therapy” into drug peddling which resulted in him getting addicted to prescription drugs for over 18 years. Soon after becoming a digital nomad Jeff decided to come off pharmaceuticals while in La Paz, Bolivia. In order to motivate him to go through with it, he signed up for a weeklong ayahuasca retreat. The Beach Commute team decided to share Jeff’s very personal story because mental health disorders are extremely common yet aren’t often discussed because they are so sensitive and sometimes seen as taboo. On top of that, of our listeners have asked how to manage mental health disorders as a digital nomad. It’s a serious barrier that prevents people from making the transition over to becoming a digital nomad. Jeff discusses exactly how he manages mental health disorders as a digital nomad, including how to get therapy, prescriptions, and day-to-day maintenance. Our teachers and our parents hammered it into our heads since we were kids: "You cannot have a gap in your resume!" and "You cannot quit your job without having another job lined up!" And these beliefs have created deep-seated fears in people and many times prevents them from making career changes in their lives. And that, in turn, prevents them from becoming a digital nomad. But are those fears actually justified anymore? Do hiring managers actually care about resumes gaps and "loyalty" anymore? We break down each of the five fears: Fear that you won't like the lifestyle and you'll have time unaccounted for on your resume and no company will hire you. Scared that you'll pogo stick to a few different companies over several months while trying new things and people will think you are a "job hopper" and not hire you. Scared that you won't be able to return to your own company. Fear that you will have a less advanced role on your resume when switching to a new job or industry, and it will make you less hirable for more advanced jobs in the future. Fear that you're being "irresponsible" about your future by getting paid less, not saving for retirement and/or having less consistent pay. Marisa uses her years of coaching experience to address each of those five fears. The group then discuss each of the three reasons why it's okay to have a gap in your resume along with plenty of practical advice. Both Jeff and Diego have a combined 15+ years hiring, and with that they contribute the reality of hiring to complement Marisa's career coaching advice. Becoming a digital nomad MIGHT not be for everyone. Or...perhaps there are certain "blockers" that make you THINK that the digital nomad life is inaccessible to you, but in reality, those blockers are very easy to overcome. The Beach Commute community is very active, and people regularly write into the show with their concerns about why they might not be able to hack it as a digital nomad. Jeff and Marisa compiled the top reasons people have told us that they think that becoming a digital nomad won't work for them. Here are a few examples of the comments we have received over the past few months: "Living as a digital nomad is probably way too expensive for me." "I don't think this lifestyle would be safe enough for me to feel comfortable." "If I have a health emergency, I'm too worried that I won't be able to get the care I need while traveling abroad." "It seems like there would be way too many logistics that I would have to work out in order to make this work." Spoiler alert: You'll probably find that each of these "reasons" are totally manageable! Listen in as Jeff and Marisa address each of these perfectly reasonable fears, and the specific action items you can take in order to overcome each of these blockers. If so, this episode has an amazing solution that could be a great fit for you. In Marisa’s interview, our guest, Bradley Rice, shares how he landed a job in the Salesforce niche making $70,000 right out of college (with no previous experience)... Bradley has helped thousands of people (with zero experience!) land a Salesforce job, with the incredible following salary statistics: Year 1 average salary: $72,000 Year 2 average salary: $90,000 Year 3 average salary: $125,000 Year 5-7 average salary: $150,000 If you’d like to learn more about Brad’s path to success, his life as a digital nomad, and how you can get into this industry too making these kind of numbers (with absolutely no prior experience), give this episode a listen now! Hollie and Rusty have taken digital nomad life to a completely different place: The wilderness. Quite literally, they work from the most remote national forests in the United States, all while working online in digital marketing and IT security. Hollie used to work with Jeff Baker as a content marketing strategist for Brafton. But late into her tenure she (using her own words) "strong armed" her employer to get them to let start working remote out of Colorado. Technically she made this possible by first proving herself to the organization for years, then converting to a consultant so that Brafton didn't need to incorporate in a new state. Both parties got what they needed out of the deal. Soon after going remote, she met Rusty and decided to go on a weeklong vacation living out of truck camper in national forests. That weeklong trip turned into six weeks. And that six weeks turned into a lifestyle in which they spend about half their time living and working remotely out of a camper van in the forest, and the other half the time in short-term leases around the United States. They are living the lives of the dreams every day. They wake up with the most beautiful views in the entire United States for half the year, and the other half the year they choose whichever new city they want to explore. You won't be able to find Hollie or Rusty anytime soon, because they are going to be moving to a remote island off the coast of Alaska next year! Link mentioned: Overlander Starlink…

Julio Monzon began his journey as a digital nomad 9 years ago, making him on of the most experienced digital nomads we have interviewed. Julio took a very strange path to becoming a digital nomad... Rather than asking his boss to work and travel, or becoming a freelancer, he actually CREATED a company with the purpose of travel. This was a very rare mindset for someone to take back in 2013, when the whole concept of a "digital nomad" was brand new. He thought, "If there isn't anything out there that allows me to travel, I'll create it." So he created a company that is remote-first, which has since grown to 270 employees. ALL of his employees are remote workers and many of them are digital nomads as well. In this episode, Julio shares: Starting a remote-first business and how it resonates with employees How becoming a digital nomad expands your interest and appreciation for cultural. Meet Danielle Lee, an ex-accountant for Xerox from the United Kingdom. Back in 2019, Xerox gave her three weeks off for her to travel (and work a tiny bit) from Peru. She left the trip loving life, and asked if she could do this “digital nomad thing” more often, but they told her that it was only going to be a one-off type of allowance. Bummer, but Danielle didn’t give up her dream. She then doubled down and asked to go to Bali, to which they said “no, absolutely not.” At that point, she had decided this lifestyle absolutely needed to be a full-time thing. She then gave the company an ultimatum and as a result they changed the policy, letting her work as a digital nomad. She then joined Wifi Tribe because she was looking for community and flexibility WHILE traveling. From there she went to Puerto Escondido (where she and Jeff met) to Florianopolis, Brazil. And she’s been traveling ever since. She even took a full 180 degree shift from her life as an accountant to a personal coach and employee of Wifi Tribe! Listen in to hear the rest of Danielle's inspirational journey to becoming a digital nomad.…

Are megacities good places to live as a digital nomad? It's a really tough question, and the true answer is: "It depends on the city." So, in order to put together a halfway intelligent method, we created a set of 6 criteria points to determine how well a megacity qualifies. They are: Community - How easy it it to find and build community? Safety - Is the location physically safe to travel, or are there pockets that are safe to travel? Internet - Is the average internet speed strong enough to support working online? Cost of living - Is the cost of goods/accommodations sustainable to live for at least a month? Coworking - Are there cafes or coworking centers available, or will you be stuck in your accomodations? Transportation - Is it easy to get around by foot/transit, or is everything a hassle to get to? Based on these six criteria, we came up with a list of seven locations that fit the bill. Some better than others, but all were within what we considered acceptable levels. Without giving away all the details, we will give you just a little teaser into the countries we discuss: Canada, Mexico, Colombia, Portugal, Argentina, Spain and Brazil. Becoming a digital nomad will be one of the most impactful decisions you will ever make in your life. Without. A. Doubt. We talk about the five most obvious reasons to us that you'll LOVE being a digital nomad. Mind you, there are many, many more, but we will leave some of the surprises to you and your experiences. You can't see as much on normal vacation: When the only time you can use to travel is your 2-4 weeks of vacation per year, you'll never accomplish 1/10th of your travel goals as you can as a digital nomad. Also, you'll be much more likely to end up in the tourist traps. Adventures: And more specifically, UNPLANNED and random adventures happen all the time as a digital nomad. Normal Saturdays as a digital nomad could be the types of adventures that most people talk about as life highlights that they talk about the rest of their lives. Culture: It's REALLY hard to get a true cultural experience on a quick 1-2 week vacation. As a digital nomad, there will be countless times you will even accidentally end up in a cultural experience. Food: Closely related to "culture", you'll likely taste the best, and sometimes strangest food you'll ever try in your life (like llama, ah!). Building community: As a digital nomad, you will meet some of the most interesting, intelligent, compassionate friends of your life. Digital nomads tends to be very like-minded in values, so it will feel like you're talking with a lifelong friend the very first time you meet. Which of these reasons do you want to become a digital nomad? Did we miss anything? Write us at hello@beachcommute.com.…

One of the most appealing aspects of being a digital nomad is the variety of food and drink that you'll run into while traveling (for better and worse!). Jeff and Diego are certified food and drink snobs, traveling the world in search of the best coffee, food and alcohol they can find. As qualified snobs, they walk you through the very best and worst places you could seek out as a digital nomad. Some of the places they discuss: Coffee: Phillz Coffee : one of the best pour-over coffee shops/trucks that won Jeff's heart over to Third Wave coffee in its San Francisco location. Tekafe : Brasov in Romania is a shockingly good place to find coffee, with a special tip of the cap to Tekafe, offering dozens of pour-over varietals. Two Minutes : Another strong showing from Romania, Two Minutes serves both a top-notch pour-over, and amazing food. Food: Zanooba: Egypt won over Diego within just weeks, topping his list with a local slow-cook favorite. OCI : Both Jeff and Diego agree that OCI in Medellin is on a completely different level with its incredible slow-cooked pork and specialty cocktails. Shiro : Representing Seattle, Shiro may be the best sushi you'll be able to find in the world. It's a destination restaurant. Alcohol: Gin Gin : Mexico City does A LOT of things right, including stellar gin cocktails. Gin Gin won over Jeff with its fancy, smoked rosemary concoctions. In this episode, Marisa interviews Palle Bo, a 55-year-old digital nomad from Denmark who began traveling the world 5.5 years ago when his kids left for University. Palle lived in the same small, rural part of Denmark for the first FIFTY years of his life, never really leaving. Yet, in the last 5.5 years since he reinvented his life as a digital nomad, he’s now traveled to over 97 different countries. In this episode, you'll learn: How it feels to be “a bit older than most other digital nomads who are traveling” ( his words, not ours) Why he chose to travel after a divorce, and how his kids (now 24 and 27 years old) played a role in the timing of his nomad life How a trip to Cape Town sparked his desire to become a digital nomad full time How he planned out every detail of his first years of nomad before even leaving, and why he completely ended up changing his plans just one week into his journey How he chooses which destinations to travel to next, when he can go anywhere in the world at any time The secret he discovered as to why digital nomads feel like they live a fuller, longer life compared to those who don’t travel Why he and his children have an even better relationship now than when he lived with them back in Denmark, and what it was like when they visited him in North Korea, Japan and South Africa The reason he may get a permanent house 15 years from now (and no earlier), and why he never wants a big house again How he finds community while traveling solo Two ways he’s booked months of free accommodation while on the road, and why traveling has actually been LESS expensive each year than living in the countryside of Denmark The two major pieces of advice he has for someone who is considering living the digital nomad life (we love these!) (save yourself time, and learn from Marisa’s mistakes) How Covid has impacted the destinations Marisa is traveling to right now The 4 coaching questions Marisa asks herself when making a decision, and how you can apply these questions when making any decisions in your life as well Why, in the past, she hasn’t gone back to destinations that she loves...even though she wanted to What Marisa’s travel schedule looks like over the next 8 months How to recognize actions you're taking in life because you feel like you “should” (rather than what you genuinely desire to do) , and how to shift this action (even when you feel guilty about it) We hope you love this episode. The 7 Unexpected Cons of Traveling Quickly as a Digital Nomad Marisa just wrapped up a trip visiting 10 different countries in Eastern Europe over a period of only 2.5 months. After a month in Bulgaria, she traveled a bit quicker through Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Spain. While social media tends to showcase the positive highlights of travel, here at Beach Commute, we love to share the real ups AND downs of travel, and everything in between. So, in this episode, Marisa shares the honest truth of how difficult it was to travel this quickly while also working full-time. In this episode, you’ll learn… The 7 specific hardships of traveling quickly as a digital nomad Why Marisa sometimes travels quickly from country to country, and why Jeff and Diego almost never do The most recent times Marisa woke up and didn’t know what country she was in 3 reasons why Marisa occasionally travels quickly, even though it’s difficult to do while working (and why she’s planning to do less of it moving forward) Why Marisa sometimes chooses to live in or visit countries she’s not that excited about ( why?!) Why working while traveling quickly is completely different than traveling as a backpacker or full-time traveler (and how traveling quickly can take a massive toll on your creativity and work productivity) The 4 aspects of fast travel that can have a HUGE effect on your physical health Marisa’s favorite, unexpected benefits of staying in one location for at least 3-4 weeks (or longer) , and what you may miss out on when staying in one location for only a short time Why it’s harder to build a community when you’re traveling more quickly If you have a dream of living as a digital nomad (and/or visiting many different countries in your lifetime) , then this episode is for you! Wondering how Wade went from serving in the US military to working for the FBI to living as a digital nomad in Bali? If so, you're going to love this interview! In this episode, Marisa interviews her good friend, Wade Sellers, who she met 3 years ago on a Nomad Cruise from Spain to Portugal. Wade is a "non-digital nomad" turned "digital nomad" turned "non digital nomad again" turned "current hybrid nomad" with a home base now in New York. He's the perfect example to show that there's no one way to live digital nomad life, and how your desires can change over time (plus, Wade is full of energy and an A+ story teller!) . In this episode, Wade shares his detailed journey about... How he spent time in Kuwait and Cuba while serving in the military (and what he really thought of this experience) How he landed a job with the FBI, and how a polygraph test gave him an even higher top secret security clearance while fighting cyber crimes How a drunk night at a karaoke bar in Tennessee at Christmas time turned into a job offer to work on spy planes in Afghanistan working only 9 months of the year and making $160k How surviving a rocket attack led to questioning his life choices...and the one question his friend asked him that changed the course of his life forever What's been THE SINGLE HARDEST thing he's every done in his life (hint: it doesn't have to do with the FBI or the military) How (and why) he built the world's first cannabis scanning app, and also helped create apps for cops to help stop human trafficking Why he spent 9 HOURS making a 4 minute YouTube video that landed him his dream job (and what that job was) Why he later got hired at Go Pro even though he was one of the LEAST qualified candidates The spam email that changed his life while he was eating pizza in bed and watching YouTube videos to escape his life (hint: it led to his decision to book his first ever one way flight and live as a digital nomad) Where he booked his ONE WAY ticket to on a complete whim using credit card points (and why he ended up staying in this location for 9 months!) Why he says "The American dream is only but one dream..." (and how he learned while traveling that most people don't actually want this dream, and what they want instead) Why he ended up finding (and loving!) having a home base in NYC after traveling all over the world (and what that means for his nomad days) If this isn't enough, this interview took place on Wade's actual birthday...so you get "an extra punch" of his (already very high, amazing) energy! Are you getting ready to test the waters as a digital nomad? The biggest first major choice you're going to make after deciding to go remote is where you're going to go first. It's scary and amazing. Fortunately, Jeff, Marisa and Diego have been all over the world, so we know exactly what things makes for an easy first destination. We also know exactly what makes for a very difficult first destination. Here are a few of the things we consider when choosing our destinations: 1. Ease of language - do they speak your first language? If not, can you understand the basics? 2. Cost - heading to Hawaii or Western Europe sure sounds sexy, but it's certain to break your bank in a hurry. We choose starter locations that won't completely drain your bank account. 3. Access to internet - Everyone wants to go to the beach, of course. But did you know that your wifi will probably be much worse, and sometimes unworkable in certain beach locations? We take this into consideration. 4. Community - Trust us, your perception of being a digital nomad will be colored negatively if you can find no one to connect with in your first destination. We selected starter destinations with strong digital nomad communities. Join us to find out which six destinations you could easily hit the ground running as a burgeoning digital nomad. Jeff interviews Will Hatton, founder of The Broke Backpacker, one of the first and most popular digital nomad/adventure travel blogs on the web. Will started his journey at 19 years old backpacking through India on $10 per day (literally a broke backpacker). From there, he went on some of the most interesting adventures we have ever heard on the podcast (both from a business and personal perspective). From converting to Islam and getting married in five days, to racing a rickshaw across the middle east, to making millions through various business ventures and losing 95% of it during the pandemic, Will has seen and been through A LOT. Perhaps most importantly, Jeff and Will spend a lot of time talking about the personal growth benefits of becoming a digital nomad. Living as a digital nomad is an AWESOME way to have amazing experiences, make lifelong friends and community, and see the different cultures of the world. The freedom you experience is unmatched. However, traveling all the time can be quite exhausting. The reality of being a digital nomad is that you end up missing the little creature comforts of living in familiar place. And of course you may miss friends and family (if they live in your hometown). We always strive to give the most honest depiction of life as a digital nomad, so we want to make sure that you always get the full, honest picture and not the perfectly curated Instagram reel. You would be shocked how much a different work schedule can impact your entire outlook on life. As a digital nomad, you will experience all the highs and lows that come with working strange (for you!) hours. For example: You might be used to the routine of starting your day with the intention of working - getting up early, eating breakfast and going straight to work. But what if you had the entire morning and early afternoon to explore a city in a new country you’re working from? What if you started your morning by taking a yoga class, exploring new cafes, visiting museums, enjoying an afternoon walk, then finishing your day with work? What about the complete opposite? What would you think of starting work at 5am, and finishing everything you have to do at 1pm? You would have the rest of the day to explore and do whatever your heart desires. Depending on the person, working unorthodox hours can be a huge pro or a huge con, and there are tons of things considered. In this episode Jeff, Diego and Marisa walk you through each of the top 5 pros and 5 cons you should be aware of as you start to venture outside your timezone. Who wouldn’t want to go to places like Rome, Paris and Madrid? Where do you dream of going in Europe? We all know the major hotspots in Europe that everyone wants to visit at some point in their lives. But should those places be on your list as a digital nomad? Sometimes these locations are better suited as vacation destinations rather than digital nomad destinations. Jeff, Diego and Marisa break down the top five common European travel destinations through the lens of long term digital nomads to answer that question. Sure, some of these places may be dreamlike and beautiful, but they may not translate AT ALL to a place to a travel and work. When considering a destination, they consider the following criteria: Is there a digital nomad community? Is the internet infrastructure strong enough to support regular online work. Is the cost of living too high to support a digital nomad lifestyle? How accessible is the city? Is it super remote, or is it near a major airport. For those places that don’t qualify as strong digital nomad locations, Jeff, Diego and Marisa offer similar alternatives that satisfy each of the criteria that will make your experience as a digital nomad positive. Imagine a beautiful tropical beach cafe in the Caribbean. You’re wearing your flip flips, a t-shirt and shorts. You grab a spot overlooking the ocean, open your laptop, and that’s your office for the day. Idyllic, right? Just 3-5 years ago, this was not even a remote possibility in tons of locations where digital nomads now live regularly. The infrastructure (mostly wifi speed) just didn’t allow for it. In some places you couldn’t even get a call out due to poor cell reception! Every single year there are more and more locations available to digital nomads that weren’t even a remote (pun intended) possibility previously. Jeff, Marisa and Diego talk about the 5 most interesting, up-and-coming locations that aren’t quite digital nomad hot spots yet, but will be in the near future. When deciding what qualifies as a potential digital nomad hotspot, they consider: Wifi speed: Probably the most important factor is whether or not you can effectively work online and hold calls. Cost of living: Most high-expense locations rarely become true digital nomad hotspots as opposed to more affordable locations. Access: The ease at which you can get to the location from the closest major airport. From the highest of highs to the lowest of lows, Jeff and Marisa share their top and bottom real-life experiences living as a digital nomad over their past 10+ combined years of traveling. Your capacity for happiness is much, much higher in life living as a digital nomad. Your Tuesday could be: swimming with whale sharks in the morning, working from the beach curing the day, and climbing a mountain with your best friends for a view of the sunset over the ocean in the evening. You could find yourself saying “yes” to a weeklong hiking trip on the Whale Trail in South Africa, on a whim. You could also find dancing every night in Mexico in a month-long, 100 hour dance class. You’ll truly never feel more free in life than saying “yes” to experiences while traveling. But in perfect contrast, your capacity for lows is more extreme as well. What you typically see in digital nomad Instagram stories is the very best - sunset views, beautiful work locations, amazing food, etc. What you don’t see are the difficult times. The reality of digital nomad life (that nobody seems to talk about) is that you’ll run into hardships that are more pronounced while traveling. Injury and illness can happen, and it can be particularly difficult to navigate in strange and unfamiliar cities! In this episode Jeff and Marisa discuss some of their most amazing and memorable experiences, along with some of their lowest experiences (and how they were able to handle them).
