Topic: Religion in Taiwan
Taiwan is a society of religious freedom and toleration. The major religions of Taiwan are
Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism. Though these are technically three different religions, it is
not uncommon to see Taiwanese who practice a little bit of all three, mixed with their own
family’s beliefs and traditions. Many of the temples in Taiwan reflect the fusion. This is in part
due to Japanese occupation, which led many Taoists to secretly worship in Buddhist temples.
When visiting a temple, you might see people tossing a pair of red moon blocks onto the floor,
these are known as jiǎobēi (筊杯), crescent-shaped wooden blocks. This is how these people
communicate with the gods. You can ask the god a yes-no question and then drop the blocks on
the floor. The landing position of the blocks shows your answer.
