Should HR's main remit be to improve the performance and capacity of employees, so that the organization's resultant performance boost yields a better experience for the employees? Or should HR focus on improving the well-being and work experience of employees directly, regardless of the impact these endeavors have on company performance? Or... perhaps HR should operate somewhere in the middle? Even on a different spectrum of objectives? If anyone can add clarity to this quandary, it's Jon Ingham. With nearly 20 years of consultative experience following decades teaching and working in high-ranking HR positions, Jon combines practical knowledge with strategic analysis and research. This week, he joins the show to demonstrate where and how HR impacts a business in terms of value add, and how we can frame our Human Resources goals to create the strongest organizational impact. It has been reported that a majority of US workers have used generative AI at work at least one time (many passing off work completed by such tools as their own). However, a much smaller percentage have integrated gen AI into their regular work, citing lack of use cases, fear of hallucinatory responses, security doubts, and other concerns. To allay these insecurities and make AI tools a little more accessible, Ross Stevenson of Steal These Thoughts joins the show this week. Ross has held learning leadership positions at Tesco, Trainline, and Filtered, affording him wide-ranging experience as a learning technologist and strategist. He is a speaker, educator, and strategist who dedicates much of his time to simplifying the technology behind AI-enabled tools and demonstrating how they can be used in organizational learning contexts. Join us as we discuss: The value generative AI possesses both for individuals and organizations The importance of investing in enterprise AI tools, and the security they offer Why Generative AI tools require a different approach than the tactics we learned to use with Google and search engines AI-related skills to develop, such as prompting, algorithmic knowledge, and bias detection The “branding” problem with modern L&D, and why L&D departments are treated with skepticism How Ross taught himself to trick, manipulate, and hoodwink you into learning from his brilliant content If you enjoyed this episode, make sure to subscribe, rate and review on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and Google Podcasts. Each year for the past 11 years, Don Taylor has asked the entire community for their opinions and feelings on what forces will have the greatest influence in the world of Learning and Development. Since the advent of ChatGPT, it’s been hard to see beyond the hopes, concerns, claims, and overall anticipation around artificial intelligence. So it’s no surprise AI came away dominant in the 2024 Global Sentiment Survey. As Don explains, this survey shows how learning practitioners FEEL about their arena this year. In an attempt to go a little deeper and observe what they’re doing and how it’s working, we discuss the 3,000 free-text answers to the question, “what are your L&D challenges in 2024?” There’s plenty of trepidation, anticipation, skepticism, and perhaps most importantly, dedication to figuring out how technology can take learning to the next level. Join us as we discuss: Why AI as a topic had such an unprecedented influence across this year’s survey How AI-centric responses transitioned away a from focus on content generation, and toward other AI-enabled functions Why social and collaborative learning took a hit in the survey, and what that means for the future Why the power of skills-based talent management is limited, and how such an approach can improve moving forward The challenges of demonstrating learning value to executives, and whether technology will facilitate this goal Whether big tech companies will take over the world If you enjoyed this episode, make sure to subscribe, rate and review on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and Google Podcasts. Far too often, we classify the way we conduct our emotions as “soft” skills, effectively secondarizing these capabilities behind the skillsets we think of as critical to our work. Ironically, communication with others is perhaps one of the few “skills” almost all of us share across our professions, and practice every single day. This week, Dr. David Caruso joins the show to help us better understand how and why our bodies and brains experience emotions, as well as how we can best control and utilize them as managers, learning leaders, and human beings. Join us as we discuss: The difference between Emotional Quotient (EQ) and Emotional Intelligence (EI), and why emotions belong within a category of intelligence Why energy level may have a counterintuitive impact on one’s ability to learn Cultural differences and “display rules” to understand when observing the emotions of others Strategies for taking control of your emotions, such as parsing mood from feeling How checking one’s emotions repeatedly can reduce the cognitive resources one has to attend to day-to-day tasks How to address leaders with critical requests utilizing cognitive empathy Emotional due diligence and researching others’ emotional habits before asking big things of them L&D In Action: Winning Strategies from Learning Leaders releases every other Tuesday, bringing you conversations from the best minds in Learning and Development. When it comes to proving one's knowledge, is there any greater demonstration than real-time application? Probably not. But, we can't always ask our people to apply their knowledge without ascertaining a high level of certainty that they won't make a big, hairy, dangerous mistake. So, what can we do? Why don't we take a page from Academia, and observe those who expand their knowledge to its limits by pursuing terminal degrees? In a dissertation defense, those seeking doctorates must (often orally) demonstrate the impenetrability of their research and knowledge. Naturally, not every learner in every organization can be afforded a review committee to ensure the knowledge they acquire is as lock-tight. And in most cases, that kind of learning doesn't require such depth of revision. Yet, presenting one's knowledge in this way is understood to be an effective method for demonstrating mastery. So, can we scale a system like this? According to Josh Kamrath, CEO of Bongo, we have the resources to do so, especially if we outsource parts of the work to artificial intelligence. Join us as we discuss: Factors that complicate the process of transitioning from learning to application The impact of demonstrating knowledge and/or teaching on the learning process The best methods for optimizing learning while it’s happening The importance of keeping humans in the loop when it comes to evaluating learning progress with AI The extent to which AI can act as a learning “coach” and give valid, beneficial feedback to human learners How learning and the attainment of knowledge is being impacted by AI and algorithms that facilitate or shortcut access to source material If you enjoyed this episode, make sure to subscribe, rate and review on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and Google Podcasts.
