Manage episode 430825513 series 2780350
At the end of June this year, the Great Barrier Reef of Australia was finally off the endangered list. The Great Barrier Reef is located in the northeast coast of Australia, and it’s enormous. It’s actually bigger than the Great Wall of China. Moreover it’s the only living thing that’s visible from space. Since 1981, the Great Barrier Reef has been a world heritage site. It’s home to more than four hundred species of colorful corals, 1500 species of fish as well as home to some endangered marine animals such as the large green sea turtles. For a while UNESCO has been worried about coral bleaching, which is caused by rising water temperature and the soil and chemicals washing into the ocean water. When coral bleaching happens, tiny algae living in corals start to die off, making corals turn white. Australian government is committed to keeping this spectacular reef safe and alive.
