November 13 - Made from Scratch: Reclaiming the Pleasures of the American Hearth, by Jean Zimmerman (2012)

With Thanksgiving feasts approaching soon, you might notice that I’m recommending a lot of food related books lately. This one is a non-fiction food history book, and I personally found it fascinating. This book sings the praises of past domesticity, points out that clearly many people in the US are clamoring for a simpler, homemade life (vis a vis the subscriptions to Martha Stewart, Better Homes & Gardens magazines) and tells stories of the “unsung heroes of the American Hearth.”
The author complains that we made a tradeoff between homemade and convenience, and that we decided to flee the domestic sphere. She writes about the decline of domesticity without judging the change in demographics. Chapters include “Heirlooms,” “Hestia’s Fire,” “Domestic Saints,” “Home Ec 101,” “A Broom of One’s Own,” “The New Mom,” “A Specialty,” and “Cloth Divas.”
