We should take the approach that people are using poison because they're desperate, because they see no other alternative.” – Andrew Stein Andrew Stein is a wildlife ecologist who spent the past 25 years studying human carnivore conflict from African wild dogs and lions in Kenya and Botswana to leopards and hyenas in Namibia. His work has long focused on finding ways for people and predators to coexist. He is the founder of CLAWS , an organization based in Botswana that's working at the intersection of cutting-edge wildlife research and community driven conservation. Since its start in 2014 and official launch as an NGO in 2020, CLAWS has been pioneering science-based, tech-forward strategies to reduce conflict between people and carnivores. By collaborating closely with local communities, especially traditional cattle herders, CLAWS supports both species conservation and rural livelihoods—making coexistence not just possible, but sustainable.…

Her Pop, Frank Sedgman was a champion tennis player, her dad Russell is in the Australian Football League Hall of Fame, and her two brothers were, and are talented athletes. Their sports journeys though have been very different. Steve went on to play AFL football at the highest level for 5 years. Brent however, removed himself from team sport altogether because of the homophobic language he'd hear on the sports field and in sports environments in general. Angie saw what her brother was going through, over many years. Add in the sexism, and racism, and she didn't want to be part of sporting environments either. I have a confession to make. I love footy shows. I cannot get enough of them, as they dissect seemingly every move of each game in the AFL, the Australian Football League. And yet I've always found the straight, white blokiness of most of these footy shows, problematic. Whilst there's occasional nods to diversity or diversity-related issues, they're never central to these shows. Then I discovered 'The Outer Sanctum' podcast. I took it out with me on my Friday morning walk around the neighborhood, and it's been a regular companion since then. It's a show that's defied my expectations, giving space to voices rarely heard in the mainstream sports media and consistently tackling issues of racism, sexism, and homophobia within the AFL. The Outer Sanctum Podcast fires me up. It intrigues me and draws me in. It makes me laugh. In a time, where hate-related speech dominates the landscape, it makes me happy and fills me with hope. Just imagine, you're a newly arrived refugee or migrant in an unfamiliar country: your new home. How do you build your self-confidence? How do you make new friends outside your community? And how do you start to feel more like a local? For the Refugee Council of Australia, SPORT is key. It's an important bridge to the new culture But what about the language barriers and dress codes for sports? And what about the opposition or resistance, both within and outside your community?
