#81: In honor of Veteran's Day, we are thrilled to welcome a special guest Kelly Miller (she/her/hers) to the podcast. Kelly is the Regional Manager for The Phoenix, supporting programs and team members in 6 states across the country. She is the founder of The Movement Collaborative, a trauma-informed movement space in Livingston, MT. With a background in mindfulness and trauma, she shares her expertise by leading yoga at veteran retreats and by hosting workshops to service-care providers and educators. Kelly herself is a veteran, who served 13 years in the Montana Army National Guard, including a year-long deployment in Iraq supporting Operation New Dawn. Check out the episode to hear Kelly's story, including:
- Drinking culture in the military, and how the use of alcohol for everything -- from celebrating to grieving -- was instilled in her early on.
- Kelly's experience returning home from deployment and the huge culture shock and trauma she had to face.
- What happened when she started to feel the symptoms of PTSD, and how she reached out to her local Veterans Affairs office who helped her realize she had a drinking problem.
- Finding yoga and meditation, and how this helped her sleep better and ground herself in the present moment.
- What led her to found The Movement Collaborative, bringing low-barrier mindfulness and movement opportunities to folks in her community.
- How The Phoenix can be a resource for veterans by helping foster a sense of community and camaraderie through shared healthy experiences.
