A superiority complex is a defense mechanism that develops overtime to help a person cope with painful feelings of inferiority. Individuals with this complex typically come across as supercilious, haughty, and disdainful toward others. They may treat others in an imperious, overbearing, and even aggressive manner.
Psychologist Alfred Adler first described the superiority complex in his early 20th-century work. He outlined that the complex is really a defense mechanism for feelings of inadequacy that we all struggle with. Alfred is regarded as the father of Individual Psychology.
