Carly Rundle, Ph. D. candidate in the Stein Monogastric Nutrition Lab, reviews the effects of supplementation with isoquinoline alkaloids on digestibility of crude protein, amino acids, starch, and acid hydrolyzed ether extract in growing and finishing pigs. Isoquinoline alkaloids are phytogenic compounds with antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory properties. They are believed to improve nutrient digestion and absorption by reducing intestinal inflammation and improving intestinal barrier function. Adapted from a presentation at the 2020 ASAS Midwestern Section meeting, Omaha, NE, March 2-4.
