The film, Medicating Normal, is a groundbreaking film about the dangers of psych drugs. Doctors have become used to explaining the need for an antidepressant as being a chemical imbalance in the brain. There is no evidence to support this explanation. In fact, a recent study has determined that modern antidepressants simply do not work at all. Yet, while they provide little, if any benefit, quitting an antidepressant suddenly can be dangerous. The same goes for anxiety drugs, benzodiazepines in particular. The film follows the lives of people who have struggled with serious adverse effects of psych drugs. They are angry that their doctors did not inform them of the risks they were taking by starting these medications. Informed consent is a major theme of the film, and the filmmakers urge doctors to consider informing every patient of the potential side effects and adverse reactions that may occur with any prescribed medication, particularly psych drugs.
