The message of repentance:

1. Is initiated by God (Lk 3:2)

Acts 17:30 In the past God overlooked such ignorance, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent.

Ezequiel 18:32 For I take no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Sovereign Lord. Repent and live!

Matthew 4:17 From that time on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.”

2. Was accompanied by baptism (Lk 3:3)

Acts 19:3-5 So Paul asked, “Then what baptism did you receive?” “John’s baptism,” they replied. 4 Paul said, “John’s baptism was a baptism of repentance. He told the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus.” 5 On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

3. Seeks to avoid God’s wrath (Lk 3:7)

Matthew 10:28 Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

Romans 5:9 Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through him!
