If you are menstruating, you will go through four phases in each cycle. Each phase is marked by hormonal fluctuations and other changes in your body, which means we can predict a bit about what will be happening with your mood in each phase. This is part of why tracking your cycle can be really useful- if you can predict your mood then you can schedule work, social events, workouts, and other parts of your life around the energy you expect to have in each phase.

I go through each cycle phase and connect what’s happening in your body to how that might make you feel.

  • When you are on your actual period, you have decreased energy and may need more rest and self reflection.
  • In the follicular phase, you have increased energy and cognition. This may mean you feel more social and adventurous.
  • The luteal phase is marked by a mood shift from social and active to reserved and mellow. After this shift, you may be able to direct your energy to finishing projects, cleaning things up, and purging.
  • You will notice increased cravings and mood swings right before your period.
