The old thinking of being a strong leader means never showing weakness is getting way too old. Too many leaders are so busy trying to be “perfect” that they end up stuck in the old version of themselves, while the world zooms past them. Refusing to acknowledge your gaps actually makes you a worse version of yourself over time. You might think you’re already doing great, but if you’re not constantly updating and improving yourself—what Aart de Geus, founder and chair of Synopsys, calls moving from version N to version N+1—you’re actually falling behind. In today's Leadership Spark, I dive into one of the most misunderstood yet essential aspects of leadership—leading with vulnerability. I’ll share insights on why acknowledging your gaps and actively working to close them is the key to unlocking your potential and driving real business performance.

Every great leader knows that the world is bigger than your comfort zone. They don’t just surround themselves with people who think like them. They seek out different perspectives, challenge their own assumptions, and learn to see through a global lens. That’s the Global Citizen Mindset, and in today’s world, it can be your competitive edge. In today's Leadership Spark, we explore how thinking beyond borders makes you a stronger leader, with insights from Ilham Kadri, CEO of Solvay, whose journey proves that real leadership isn’t about where you come from—it’s about how far you’re willing to see. Learn why leaders who think globally make better decisions, solve complex problems, and navigate uncertainty with confidence. ________________ Start your day with the world’s top leaders by joining thousands of others at Great Leadership on Substack. Most people see investing as just stocks and numbers, but the world’s greatest investors approach it differently. Their biggest lessons go beyond money—they're about how to think, make smarter decisions, and live a richer life. William Green, bestselling author of Richer, Wiser, Happier, has interviewed over 50 legendary investors, including Charlie Munger, Howard Marks, and Sir John Templeton. Along the way, he’s uncovered powerful insights that apply not just to investing but to leadership, business, and personal growth. In this episode, William shares what leaders can learn from investors about making better decisions, avoiding costly mistakes through inversion thinking, and applying the power of compounding to knowledge, relationships, and habits. He reveals why mastering emotions matters more than mastering money, why intuition is just as critical as data, and how knowing your circle of competence helps you focus on playing games you’re equipped to win and knowing your limits. We also explore how ethical leadership isn’t just the right thing to do—it’s a long-term advantage, and long-term success is often tied to integrity, self-awareness, and learning from both wins and failures. ________________ Start your day with the world’s top leaders by joining thousands of others at Great Leadership on Substack. Most career advice is useless. "Follow your passion." "Wait for the right opportunity." "Success happens when you get lucky." These are some of the most common (and misleading) career clichés. And if you’ve been following them, you might be stuck waiting instead of building. In today’s Leadership Spark, I’m sharing three unconventional strategies that completely changed my career and helped me build a life on my own terms. First, learning how to learn is the single most important skill you can develop—waiting for someone else to teach you what you need will keep you stuck. Second, "fake it till you make it" isn’t about pretending—it’s about rewiring your mindset so you can step into opportunities before you feel ready. And finally, chasing passion is one of the biggest career mistakes people make. Passion isn’t something you find—it’s something you bring into what you do. These three shifts changed everything for me. They’ll do the same for you. Listen now. ________________ Start your day with the world’s top leaders by joining thousands of others at Great Leadership on Substack. Traditional performance reviews are broken—outdated, ineffective, and dreaded by employees and managers alike. Many companies scrapped them, only to bring them back in new forms. Why? What’s really driving employee disengagement? And how can AI help leaders make smarter, unbiased decisions about performance, promotions, and career growth? In today’s episode, Doug Dennerline, CEO of Betterworks, breaks down the new performance management approach replacing outdated annual reviews, and why companies are rethinking performance tracking. We also unpack how AI is transforming feedback, goal-setting, and leadership to make smarter people decisions. Hear Doug’s take on the future of hybrid work and what most managers get wrong about employee engagement. Finally, we cover how HR’s role is evolving into a strategic force in the future of work. If you lead a team, manage performance, or want to future-proof your leadership, this is a conversation you can’t afford to miss. This episode is sponsored by Betterworks If you’re ready to move from managing performance to shaping the future, EmpowerHR 2025 is where it begins. Vulnerability alone WON’T make you a great leader. Yes, vulnerability is key to trust and connection. Leaders are told to be open, admit mistakes, and be authentic. But vulnerability without leadership can backfire. Imagine a CEO addressing their company during a crisis. They acknowledge the struggles, admit uncertainty, and… stop there. No vision. No direction. Just uncertainty. That’s not leadership. That’s fear without a plan. In today’s Leadership Spark, we explore what separates vulnerability that builds trust from vulnerability that erodes confidence. You’ll discover the real formula for impactful leadership: Vulnerability + Leadership = Trust & Competence. Hear real-world examples of leaders who got it right and those who didn’t. If you’ve ever wondered how to be authentic while still inspiring confidence, this episode is for you. ________________ Start your day with the world’s top leaders by joining thousands of others at Great Leadership on Substack. AI is moving faster than most leaders can keep up. If you’re not leveraging it, you’re already behind. But AI adoption isn’t as simple as plugging in new tech. While some companies are already using it to outpace competitors, others are stuck in analysis paralysis—unsure how to implement AI without opening themselves up to risk. If you want to lead in this AI-driven world, you can’t afford to wait. In this episode, Dan Priest, US Chief AI Officer of PwC, breaks down the biggest AI shifts happening right now and the strategies leaders need to stay ahead. You’ll learn why AI has moved from a technical tool to a business strategy driver, how companies can avoid the biggest AI adoption mistakes, the critical role of responsible AI governance, and why understanding AI’s human impact is just as important as its technical capabilities. ________________ Start your day with the world’s top leaders by joining thousands of others at Great Leadership on Substack. Are multiple generations in the workplace really as different as we think? Or is work ethic the real issue we should be talking about? In today’s Leadership Spark, we challenge the idea that generational differences define work habits. Instead, we explore why life stages and experiences—not age—shape how people approach work, and how social media trends like "lazy girl jobs" are promoting toxic career mindsets. We also break down why work ethic seems to be declining, what companies should expect from employees, and how leaders can balance vulnerability with accountability to build stronger teams. If you want to understand what’s really happening in today’s workplace, this episode is for you. ________________ Start your day with the world’s top leaders by joining thousands of others at Great Leadership on Substack. If half your team suddenly quit, would you know why? Research shows that 50% of employees quit because of their relationship with their leader, and it’s not because of screaming bosses or impossible workloads—it’s because they feel ignored, undervalued, and disconnected. Backed by data from 200,000 leaders worldwide, Jack reveals the three leadership qualities that make the biggest impact on employees, the cascading effect of great leadership across an organization, and why strategic thinking, inspiration, and results-focused leadership matter now more than ever. We also discuss how you can measure your effectiveness as a leader without relying on complex surveys, as well as the state of leadership in 2025, the impact of AI, and whether leadership training programs are actually working.
