When I was 10 years old, my dad took me to see the movie Rocky III and aside from buying the whole champion has a fall from grace, becomes underdog again and fights his way back to the top storyline, hook, line and sinker, I was completely enthralled with one scene in particular where the world boxing champion took on the wrestling champion in a charity match. Rocky Balboa vs Thunderlips the ultimate male. This was my first look at Hulk Hogan which eventually kickstarted my childhood guilty pleasure of watching wrestling. It had the full checklist of items to attract a young me. You had your heroes, villains, colourful characters, wild storylines, chiseled physiques, crazy athleticism….Despite my parents standing in the room and watching with me for a few minutes before walking away laughing and shaking their heads asking ``how can you watch this?” I loved it and I so admired these athletes with their muscles, strength and ability not to mention microphone skills. The 80’s wrestlings so called golden era eventually gave way to the 90’s attitude era. Me now in my 20’s living on my own and free from my parents judgement would instead laugh along with the ridiculousness either by myself or with friends when we would get together for the latest pay per view event. We would entertain ourselves going along with the wrestlers, in character of course as they made their way through their far fetched storylines each more wild then the last All the while marvelling at the incredible stunts and feats of strength these guys were putting their bodies through.

As the months and years went on some really sad stories started to come out about aging wrestlers and how their lifestyle was leading to some tragic consequences. There was drug and steroid abuse (surprise, surprise), alcohol, pills, early death...and even murder! There were so many wrestlers dying young that you can go through your list of favourite wrestlers as a kid and the majority of them are now dead, most before they even made it out of their 40’s. Those who didn’t happen to drop dead suddenly had suffered from broken bodies, weight gain, depression….definitely not a great way to live out your golden years. Through all these tragic stories of wrestlers retiring to a sad life with debilitating injuries, depression and addiction there was one success story that stood out, Diamond Dallas Page (DDP) had taken his fame that he built through his wrestling career and in retirement started DDP Yoga. Despite walking away from shark tank without a deal Diamond Dallas Page has created a HUGELY successful brand with his program using his unique form of power yoga using traditional yoga positions, rehabilitation techniques, calisthenics and dynamic resistance. I always talk about the 23/1 rule saying that you need to make the most out of your 23 hours outside the gym to get the best results from your 1 hour in it, a mobility program like this could be a great step to help the strength athlete….After all if it can bring back Jake “The Snake” Roberts from the brink of disaster that he was, it sounds interesting to me! Let’s have a look at DDPY for the strength athlete.
