Selena Fox is the Executive Director of Circle Sanctuary Nature Preserve, a two-hundred acre Nature sanctuary located in the Driftless bioregion of southwestern Wisconsin. An EcoActivist for more than fifty years, Selena was among the organizers of events for the first Earth Day on April 22, 1970 and is the founder of Circle Cemetery, one of the first Green cemeteries in North America.
Also known as Reverend Selena Fox, she is Senior Minister of Circle Sanctuary which has been serving Nature Spirituality practitioners worldwide since 1974. Selena writes and speaks on a variety of topics, including Celebrating the Seasons, Herbology, Pagan Ways, and Life Passages. #005 - Have you ever heard of the Music of the Plants? Join us for an intriguing conversation with herbalist Susan Bowers about her experience in making medicine with the Music of the Plants, a device first developed at Damanhur in the 1970’s and designed to translate the electromagnetic impulses of plants into melodies. Susan is an herbalist and activist who lives her life in service to the plants and the Earth. She’s been practicing Herbal Plant Medicine for over 45 years. Her Grandmothers are Juanita, Marietta and Ruth, and she lives on the Port Gamble S’klallam tribal ancestral lands. In this interview, Susan shares deep wisdom about what it means to be in right relationship with the plants. Here are some gems from her experience: “Being in right relationship with plants, with the entire ecosystem of my garden and the wild places I forage means recognizing that all life is Sacred and Sentient. All life is interconnected. My traditions have taught me that I must first sit with my plants and seeds in quiet. I then ask permission and give offerings, and listen to their reply. I explain what my intention is and who will receive help from the food and medicine they provide. I give gratitude to them for collaborating with me. When making medicine this year I've been playing plant music with the Bamboo M, a Music of the Plants device. This adds another layer of healing to the medicine and food. I feel more connected to the medicine because the music takes me out of my head and into my heart. That is key, being in your heart when you are working with the plant people. And they are happy to serve us if we acknowledge them and get permission. The reciprocity between us is felt on a new level with the music. Science is now explaining what the ancient cultures knew. Join us for a very special Plant Spirit Podcast conversation with Culturalist and Alchemist Ke’oni Hanalei, who honors the ancient plant medicine lineage of his Maui grandmother (tūtū), Kau'ikeonalani, in his work and connection with plants. In this episode, Ke’oni offers profound insight into the ancient, timely wisdom of Pohala (to recover consciousness), and how plants can support this process. Recognizing that the vast majority of what he knows regarding plant medicine comes from his direct lineage where plants are gathered and honored in ceremony and in connection with the moon phases, Ke’oni shares about the protocols of plant medicine collaboration. He also shares about his experience and direct knowledge of Pua’aehuehu, which is Fern Medicine, or emotional intelligence. He offers messages and wisdom on the healing gifts of Ferns, including what they can tell us about coming into balance and homeostasis on the planet at this time. Ke’oni Hanalei is a descendant of the Mū people, the inhabitants of Papahānaumokuakea (Northwestern Hawaiian Islands) before the migration of the Polynesians, through the lines of Kā’ō’u’ikalanikaleimaumau, Ololu on his maternal grandmothers line, and Mahat on his maternal grandfathers line. Ke’oni comes from a long line of healers, mystics, fisherman, navigators, and farmers embedded in ‘ike, or knowledge, and he is the founder of PōHALA Hawaiian Botanicals, based in Maui and Kaua’i in the Hawaiian islands. A vast majority of what Ke’oni knows regarding plant medicine and distillation comes from this direct lineage. His grandmother and female elders taught him the trade of plant extraction. Most of the methods he resources in medicine making remains loyal to these practices. Medicinals, including the oils, tinctures, hydrosols, and essences and essentials, are gathered and honored in ceremony and thus extracted in small batches over a period of time loyal to distinct moon phases which place a botanicals specific house of power. This is the old way and ensures a plant transfers its life-force (mana) into product form. Pua’aehuehu, Fern Medicine, or emotional intelligence, is one aspect of this ‘ike, and dominates what he expresses today. This is the legacy of his lineage. Fern Medicine is the awareness of the movement of emotions, and the release from control fixation. Ke’oni is also versed in ancient primal, meditative, and movement practices, such as ‘Ulu, which incite cellular memory, DNA activation, and the comprehension of familial and lineal wisdom through the reading of the nervous system and DNA. Suhaly is an AfroKisqueyan herbalist, artist, educator, and community organizer. And she’s the founder of Moon Mother Apothecary, a practice and offering of heart-centered, moon-powered medicines created in the traditional wisdom and knowledge of her ancestors. In this episode, Suhaly shares about how working with nourishing roots like Ginger and Astragalus and soothing herbs like Lemon balm and Oatstraw allow us to slow down and reconnect to our wholeness, to each other, to ourselves, and to nourishment. She also offers key insights into how plants can help us find the courage and the bravery that is required to take a leap into new depths, and how she has found inspiration in Mae Jemison, who was the first Black woman to venture into outer space; and Andrea Motley Crabtree, the first Black woman deep sea diver in the US army. The Moon Mother will be hosting an upcoming workshop on the Mother of All Lands: Plants of Power, Purpose, Resistance in Kiskeya with Herban Cura on April 24th; where she’ll do a deep dive into the Materia Medica, folklore, mythology, and socio-political histories of some medicinal plants prominent in Dominican plantwork & the ways they are used across various Dominican communities and in the Dominican Diaspora. Suhaly Bautista-Carolina (she/they), aka Moon Mother aka The Earth Warrior, is an AfroKiskeyan herbalist, artist, arts administrator, educator, mother, daughter, wife, and community organizer. Her practice lives intentionally at the intersection of plant power and people power and centers the collective wisdom of her community and the ancestral legacy of her people, while creating spaces of agency for folks to enter into their own healing. She is a 2018 graduate of the Sacred Vibes Apothecary spiritual herbalism apprenticeship, and carries out her purpose through small batch, moon-powered plant medicine offerings, justice-forward collaborations, workshops, knowledge-shares, and beyond. Suhaly has hosted plant medicine-making workshops with spaces including New York Botanical Garden, Gossamer, The Wing, The Museum of the City of New York, Ethel’s Club, Fotografiska, The Highline and several others.
