If you’re not familiar with the term acting “as if”- it's a common saying in 12-step recovery and one of the ways we learn to adopt new ways of being in the world. Acting “as if” is essentially engaging in behaviors toward the goal of achieving something positive in your life by emulating the person you want to be or the life you want to have. But often, I get people questioning how this is different from pretending, something those of us in recovery are tired of doing. That’s what I am here to talk about today! This week’s episode 289 of the Fragmented to Whole Podcast is about how to go beyond pretending- build your authenticity through acting “as if”!

In this episode of the Fragmented to Whole Podcast, I’m sharing how acting “as if” differs greatly from pretending (it has everything to do with your intentions) and how you can use this practice to move closer to the person you want to become and live the life you want to have.

Be sure to tune in to all the episodes to receive tons of practical tips on living a more whole life and to hear even more about the points outlined above.

Send us a text For much of my life, I've known that one of my most hated human characteristics is arrogance. So, imagine my surprise when I learned in recovery that I was arrogant. Recovery also helped me understand that I hated it because it was something in me that I didn't like. And you know what we say in recovery: you spot it, you got it, and often, if you're spotting something regularly in other people, it's because you have it and probably don't like it. This week’s episode 312 of the Fragmented to Whole Podcast is about the humbling truth behind my need to rescue and how I got out of it. Some of the talking points I go over in this episode include: Recovery helped me realize that my desire to help others stemmed from the need for control and superiority. Pointing out the different types of arrogance: intellectual, moral, spiritual, and social. Strategies for overcoming the need to rescue or fix others (including some language to use when doing so). I encourage you to reflect on your own "helping" behaviors. Are you truly supporting others or subtly trying to control outcomes? Challenge yourself to approach relationships with genuine curiosity and respect for others' capabilities. Send us a text When my homeless friend moved in with me, we often listened to music instead of NPR, which was typical for me at the time. I came to realize that replacing politics with music shifted my mood drastically. When I was no longer filling my ears with the horrible things happening in our world, I noticed how much more at peace I felt and how much of a game changer this was for me. This week’s episode 311 of the Fragmented to Whole Podcast is about choosing peace over panic- why I stopped watching the news. In this episode of the Fragmented to Whole Podcast, I’m sharing my transformative journey of prioritizing my mental health by stepping away from constant news consumption, some options if you want to limit your news intake, but don’t want to be kept out of the loop completely, and a prayer you can read before watching the news should you choose to do so. A Prayer Before Reading the News Written by Rabbi Irwin Keller in early 2016 My God, the soul you have placed in me is pure and vulnerable. I am afraid that looking at today’s news will be painful. Encircle me in a robe of light so that I can witness the wounds of the world without being wounded myself. Let me learn what I need to know In order to be of greatest use without being overwhelmed by despair. I feel your protective light now as I open myself to the world’s suffering and the world’s joys. Amen Remember, you are not obligated to be constantly informed about every world event. Your mental peace is more important than feeling perpetually anxious about things outside your control. Take a moment to evaluate how news consumption affects your daily life, and give yourself permission to make changes that support your emotional wellness. Send us a text For some of us who struggle with addiction, we’re using our addiction to fill some type of hole we’re feeling. Today’s guest, Mark, was using his compulsive, addictive behaviors in an attempt to fill a “God-sized hole” in his life. He shares with us how recovery and finding his higher power has helped him fill that hole and soar beyond what he ever believed possible. This week’s episode 310 of the Fragmented to Whole Podcast is about Mark’s story: it’s hard to get off the ground when your wings are cut! In this episode of the Fragmented to Whole Podcast, Mark shares his profound journey through various addictions and the transformative power the 12-step program had on his path to healing. Some of the talking points Mark I go over in this episode include: Mark’s lifelong journey of using compulsive behaviors to fill a hole in his life. Addiction is often a symptom of deeper emotional wounds. Spiritual growth involves right-sizing your life and practicing humility. Recovery is about letting go and unlearning things so we can thrive, not just survive. Mark's journey demonstrates that no matter how dark your past, transformation is possible. If you're struggling with compulsive behaviors or feeling trapped, remember that hope exists. Take the first step by reaching out to a 12-step program or seeking support from professionals who understand your journey. Your path to healing and wholeness begins with a single, courageous decision to change. Send us a text Before recovery, I had heard all about the importance of acceptance, but my question still remained: How do I do it? Send us a text Regardless of how long I have been working with clients as a boundaries coach, I am still amazed by the mind-blowing revelations my clients have as a result of working with me. Today, I am sharing one of these profound experiences by sharing a story from “Sylvia,” one of my clients who confidently took back ownership of her life. This week’s episode 308 of the Fragmented to Whole Podcast is about how to go beyond ‘woe is me’- Sylvia’s powerful shift to self-ownership. In this episode of the Fragmented to Whole Podcast, I’m sharing a story from a client call where, with the help of boundaries coaching, “Sylvia” was able to overcome years of trauma, workplace challenges, and personal struggles to emerge stronger and more confident. Some key takeaways I go over in this episode include: You have the right to set boundaries because you get to live your life the way YOU want. You don’t have to engage with people who have hurt you. You don’t need to explain yourself to everyone. You own your narrative; other people don’t get to tell you who you are or were. Give yourself grace, treating yourself as you would a beloved friend. Sylvia's story is a powerful reminder that we all have the ability to change our narratives and reclaim our power– and that's something we can all learn from. Send us a text One of the most profound things I have worked on in my recovery journey is showing love to myself even after I make a mistake. So, when I had a recent experience where my unconditional love was tested after a slip-up with food, I had to share it with you. This week’s episode 307 of the Fragmented to Whole Podcast is about discovering unconditional love after a food slip! In this episode of the Fragmented to Whole Podcast, I’m sharing a recent food slip I had during a dinner with friends, eating unplanned seconds, and how, through recovery, I discovered the transformative power of loving myself, regardless of my mistakes. Some of the talking points I go over in this episode include: Sharing the backstory of what led to my food slip and how I immediately contacted my sponsor about it. The profound moment of self-love I had while doing my inner family work. Realizing that I still get to be loved, regardless of my mistakes or actions. The importance of honesty and vulnerability in my recovery and self-healing journey, Remember that you are worthy of love exactly as you are. Send us a text For years, I thought emotional unavailability happened to me, not something I actively participated in. Spoiler alert: I was dead wrong. Today, I'm pulling back the curtain on my journey from emotional unavailability to emotional availability and how recovery helped me understand and embrace my own feelings and the feelings of others. This week’s episode 306 of the Fragmented to Whole Podcast is about how to unpack emotional unavailability- my journey to feeling my feelings (and yours). In this episode of the Fragmented to Whole Podcast, I’m sharing what it looked like for me to be emotionally unavailable and practical steps to become more emotionally available, feeling your feelings and giving space for others to do the same. Your emotional journey is a continuous process of growth and self-discovery. Start today by being curious about your feelings and treating yourself with the same compassion you would offer a dear friend. Remember, becoming emotionally available is not about perfection but about progress and self-understanding. Send us a text One of the promises of ACA (Adult Children of Alcoholics and Dysfunctional Families) is that we go from being a reactor to an actor in our lives. This means taking a proactive approach to our lives rather than reacting to what is happening. It means that we are being thoughtful, giving conscious consideration to what's going on around us, and making conscious decisions instead of reacting based on habits or patterns from the past. This week’s episode 305 of the Fragmented to Whole Podcast is about how to go from reactor to responder: breaking free from old patterns! Some of the talking points I go over in this episode include: The difference between reacting and responding, and why it’s a significant paradigm shift in recovery. The role that awareness, decision-making, and learning to pause play in becoming a proactive person. Practical strategies for experimenting with different behaviors and getting feedback to determine what works best for you. Learning to view yourself as the solution, not the problem, and take empowered action towards the life you desire. Moving from being a reactor to a responder is a journey that requires patience and practice, but the rewards are immense. By becoming more aware, making conscious choices, and experimenting with new ways of being, you can break free from old patterns and start living a life of purpose and fulfillment. If you're able to adapt, you'll be able to thrive instead of just surviving or existing. That’s where the concept of adaptation energy comes into play. This week’s episode 304 of the Fragmented to Whole Podcast is about how to handle life’s demands without losing your shit! Some of the talking points I go over in this episode include: Defining adaptation energy, as introduced to me by my meditation teacher, Emily Fletcher, the founder of Ziva meditation. Why filling our adaptation energy tank is essential to avoid emotionally burning out. Consistent self-care practices you can do to refill your adaptation energy tank. Sharing an example of how recovery has allowed me to keep calm in stressful situations. Don't wait until you're running on empty to prioritize your self-care. Send us a text Codependency in relationships can be a complex cycle to break, especially when it comes to family members. We tend to tolerate toxic behaviors for the sake of love and loyalty. That’s why today I wanted to unpack some of the myths around loyalty and tolerance in dysfunctional family dynamics and how true love requires setting healthy boundaries. This week’s episode 303 of the Fragmented to Whole Podcast is about breaking the codependency cycle! Some of the talking points I go over in this episode include: Love and loyalty do not mean tolerating abuse; when we excuse harmful behavior in the name of love, we're being loyal only to the dysfunction. True love includes boundaries, truth, and valuing yourself as a person, not just as a parent. The belief that "I don't matter" is a common issue for those in codependent relationships, leading them to prioritize the happiness of others over their own well-being. Send us a text I recently heard a parable about a Zen farmer and how we perceive “good luck” vs. “bad luck.” I wanted to share it on the podcast this week because I think it reflects such an important mindset shift for how we view life’s unexpected twists and turns. This week’s episode 302 of the Fragmented to Whole Podcast is about lessons from a Zen farmer- the truth about luck. In this episode of the Fragmented to Whole Podcast, I’m sharing the parable I read that has such a profound message about how we perceive “luck,” drawing parallels to my own journey of recovery from co-dependency, trauma, and compulsive overeating. Send us a text We learn in recovery that the reason we continue to carry the message of recovery is that, yes, we want other people to recover. Still, first and foremost, we carry the message to continue recovering ourselves. So, for my 300th podcast episode, I wanted to reflect on my journey from numbing myself to finding freedom through recovery and how continuing to share the message of recovery has been transformative in my life. This week’s episode 300 of the Fragmented to Whole Podcast is about my journey from numbing to freedom! In this episode of the Fragmented to Whole Podcast, I’m celebrating the milestone of reaching 300 podcast episodes and recapping my story, highlighting the tools that aided my recovery and the spiritual awakenings that changed my life. Send us a text As I am nearing another massive milestone in my podcasting journey (300 episodes!), I wanted to go back and share the origin story of how I grew from a fragmented, lost person in recovery to an entrepreneur, boundaries coach, and podcast host sharing my experiences and lessons with the world. This week’s episode 299 of the Fragmented to Whole Podcast is about why I started sharing recovery wisdom with the world. Some of the talking points I go over in this episode include: The series of events that led me to start a podcast, sharing my wisdom with the world. Where the name Fragmented to Whole came from. My tendency to lie and put on different masks to please others was just part of the source of my fragmented nature. How I came to be a boundaries coach, not just a life coach. The serendipitous moment the universe planted the desire to start a podcast in me before podcasting even existed. Send us a text As young people, we are often taught refusal skills as it relates to saying no to drugs, alcohol, or unwanted sexual advances. Recovery has taught me that refusal skills are not just for the realm of substance use or sexual behavior. If we’re learning how to set boundaries, refusal skills are an essential part of it. This week’s episode 298 of the Fragmented to Whole Podcast is about how to go from chaos to composure- the power of refusal skills! Some of the talking points I go over in this episode include: My journey of learning to “stop dragging the story”- a habit of retelling the same story of negative experiences, perpetuating chaos and trauma in my life. Sharing an excerpt from the book Drop The Rock that introduced me to the invaluable tool that refusal skills are in protecting my peace. Things to consider and scripts to use when developing your refusal skills in real-world scenarios. By developing refusal skills, you’ll be empowered to honor your needs, cultivate self-care, and create the life you truly desire. Send us a text The practice of keeping a daily gratitude journal has had such a considerable impact on my life that I now make a gratitude list both morning and night. I’ve found that the benefit of creating this list is that you have to search for things to be grateful for. You almost become wired to look for things to be grateful for in every moment, shifting your perspective to focus on the positives. This week’s episode 296 of the Fragmented to Whole Podcast is about the ripple effect of gratitude- how small moments spark big changes. Some of the talking points I go over in this episode include: Using morning and nightly gratitude journaling as a way to shift my perspective and recognize more good in my life. How practicing gratitude has helped me recognize the pivotal moments and people that have shaped the trajectory of my life. Send us a text As we know, boundaries are essential for our well-being, but communicating them effectively can be a challenge. Last week on the podcast, I shared the importance of mastering communication to create healthy relationships. As a continuation of that, I wanted to share my tips for how to clearly communicate our boundaries with others. This week’s episode 295 of the Fragmented to Whole Podcast is about how to communicate clearly, honestly, and politely Some of the talking points I go over in this episode include: Boundaries only become more difficult when you wait to set them. Politeness can go a long way in communicating boundaries. Take ownership of your boundaries; be truthful and avoid lying to justify them. Setting a boundary is not something to apologize for - it's your right to protect your needs and boundaries. Establish clear, consistent rules to depersonalize boundaries and make them about you, not the other person. If you’re unsure what your boundaries are, take time to pause, gather your thoughts, and communicate your boundaries when you’re sure. Offer an alternative or compromise to show your willingness to collaborate. Send us a text Before getting into recovery, I thought that I was a good communicator. While that may have been the case when it came to my work, I came to realize that interpersonally, I was actually a horrible communicator. This week’s episode 294 of the Fragmented to Whole Podcast is about how to master communication, avoid conflict, and create healthier relationships! Some of the talking points I go over in this episode include: Examples of how I communicated poorly by speaking indirectly, beating around the bush, and expecting people to automatically know things or read my mind. How I experimented with the ways I communicated my boundaries early in my recovery from compulsive overeating and sugar addiction. Send us a text I have been following a guy named David Bayer for some time now and have been greatly influenced by him. One of the many pieces of wisdom he shares about limiting beliefs is that when we have a core limiting belief that we can’t seem to let go of, no matter how many tools we use, it’s often because that belief is connected to a person. Specifically, it may be connected to a resentment toward that person. When I heard that, I had the epiphany that my core limiting belief is that there will never be enough, particularly when it comes to money. And this belief stems from experiences I had with my dad. This week’s episode 292 of the Fragmented to Whole Podcast is about rediscovering love for my father- a journey through resentment and healing! In this episode of the Fragmented to Whole Podcast, I’m sharing my process of doing resentment and forgiveness inventories to uncover underlying resentments I was holding about my father and the reparenting work that came as a result of it - leading me to the realization of how much I truly loved my father as a child. The work I did as a result of this realization allowed me to experience profound emotional healing and vulnerability that was not possible in my real-life relationship with him. Send us a text As part of my ACA recovery journey, I have been making daily conscious contact with my inner family members, one of which includes my inner teenager. Through this inner work and checking in with my inner teen, I have realized that my people-pleasing ways have put me in harm’s way. Since I was often not able to say no, I found myself in situations I didn’t want to be in with feelings I could not handle, so I turned to using substances as a coping mechanism to numb myself. Recovery has since allowed me to rewrite these scenarios, let go of old patterns, and heal. This week’s episode 291 of the Fragmented to Whole Podcast is about reclaiming my inner teen’s voice- how to say no with inner strength! Some of the talking points I go over in this episode include: The major breakthrough I had with my inner teenager who has been preventing me from asking for help and expressing my needs. How reparenting my inner teenager has allowed me to revisit past experiences, honor my feelings, and respond with boundaries. The support of my other inner family members has been crucial in my reparenting process, providing the love, guidance, and reassurance my teenage self needed. Send us a text Everyone is on their unique path to healing. While there are many things we can gain from others’ journeys, every journey is ultimately different, so it is important to find the path that works for you . Jesse Harless came to terms with this realization once he was introduced to what some may view as an unconventional form of healing, cold exposure, and plant medicine. What he didn’t understand at first slowly became the thing to lower his extreme anxiety and keep him going on his path to healing. This week’s episode 290 of the Fragmented to Whole Podcast is about connection, cold exposure, and plant medicine! In this episode of the Fragmented to Whole Podcast, Jesse Harless shares his profound journey from being born into addiction to his journey to recovery through focusing on the 12 steps, physical fitness, and nervous system regulation. Some of the talking points Jesse and I go over in this episode include: Jesse’s build up of addiction over time and the breaking point that ultimately forced him into recovery. The crucial role that connection played in Jesse’s recovery, from finding a mentor and therapist to building meaningful relationships within 12-step fellowships. How cold therapy has helped regulate his nervous system and build resilience. Jesse’s approach to researching and incorporating psychedelic-assisted therapy into his recovery plan. When it comes to your own healing journey, trust your own heart, trust your own path and see what works for you, and then study the people who have gone before as guides to see if that serves you. Send us a text If you’re not familiar with the term acting “as if”- it's a common saying in 12-step recovery and one of the ways we learn to adopt new ways of being in the world. Acting “as if” is essentially engaging in behaviors toward the goal of achieving something positive in your life by emulating the person you want to be or the life you want to have. But often, I get people questioning how this is different from pretending, something those of us in recovery are tired of doing. That’s what I am here to talk about today! Send us a text Last week on the podcast, I talked about how setting healthy boundaries was the key to changing the four patterns of overgiving. I want to further that conversation today by providing actionable guidance on understanding yourself better, setting boundaries that reflect your actual wants and needs, and upholding your boundaries once you decide on them. This week’s episode 288 of the Fragmented to Whole Podcast is about how boundaries restore balance and energize your life! If you missed part 1 of this episode, you can listen to it here: Overgiving No More - Part 1: Recognizing the Four Patterns that Drain You . Some of the talking points I go over in this episode include: What boundaries are, including some examples of the boundaries I uphold for myself and others. Why setting boundaries is an essential step to overcome the habit of overgiving. Knowing when and where to set boundaries starts with understanding what matters to you first. Advice for how to actually set and uphold boundaries with other people Overgivers often overgive because we feel like we must do that to earn our place. But when you're clear on your identity, you know that you belong because of who you are, not because you've given them extra, and they're therefore allowing you to belong. Send us a text I have always been a giver, but through recovery, I came to terms with the fact that I had been an overgiver. I felt obligated to drop everything and give to everyone at the drop of a hat, which was draining. However, through building healthy boundaries, I learned to give in a healthy way, pouring from the overflow instead of from an empty cup. This week’s episode 287 of the Fragmented to Whole Podcast is part 1 of Overcoming No More: Recognizing the Four Patterns That Drain You! If you feel like you don’t know how to be in your life, be in your feelings, feel situated within yourself or how to be in relationships or organizations, it’s probably because you’re more focused on others than you are yourself. If this is you, you are a perfect candidate for Boundaries by Design: A Blueprint for Life , an 8-week structured course for women. This group coaching program will give you the framework, coaching, and guidance to create a manual for your life. You’ll know where you end and others begin, what your responsibility is and what’s not, and what you like, want, need, and prefer. Some of the talking points I go over in this episode include: The difference between someone overgiving and someone just giving. Breaking down the 4 common patterns of people who overgive: Misplaced outer focus. Excessive independence. Self-imposed limitations. Ineffective communication. Examples of how each of these patterns might show up in your life. How building healthy boundaries helps you keep the focus on yourself and avoid overgiving. Stay tuned for next week as I share how boundaries restore balance and energize your life. Send us a text Many people think that building boundaries is about building walls between us and other people. While this is true in cases where you may have a dangerous or toxic person in your life that you need to build a wall between, in the majority of cases, boundaries actually bring us closer to other people. This week’s episode 286 of the Fragmented to Whole Podcast is about building bridges, not walls- how and why boundaries bring us closer to others! You’ll know where you end and others begin, what your responsibility is and what’s not, and what you like, want, need, and prefer. In this episode of the Fragmented to Whole Podcast, I’m sharing examples of how I acted as a “chameleon” in past relationships, changing my interests and preferences to fit with my partners’ and how building healthy boundaries helps you understand yourself better and effectively communicate your likes, wants and needs. We are built to bond with other people and the best way to bond with others is if they know who we actually are. Send us a text Since getting into ACA (Adult Children of Alcoholics and Dysfunctional Families), I have come to understand that I have gift trauma. This is a form of relational trauma (sometimes referred to as little t trauma) that is a result of something happening in the context of a relationship over time. For me, this came as a result of feeling emotionally invalidated through gifts in my past relationships. This week’s episode 285 of the Fragmented to Whole Podcast is about when gifts become trauma- emotional invalidation in relationships! If you feel like you don’t know how to be in your life, be in your feelings, feel situated within yourself, or how to be in relationships or organizations, it’s probably because you’re more focused on others than you are yourself. In this episode of the Fragmented to Whole Podcast, I’m sharing some examples from my life where I have felt emotionally invalidated when family members or romantic partners have bought (or not bought) me gifts, how my relationship with my sweetheart is healing this trauma for me, and the importance of releasing expectations of others to find peace. Let this be your reminder that you do not have to stay in relationships with people who continually invalidate you, whether it has to do with gifts or not. Send us a text Throughout my recovery journey, I have gotten into the habit of writing down personal revelations or impactful quotes that I come across to document my experiences and insights. Many of these made a profound impact on my perception of things, so I wanted to share some of them with you today. If you feel like you don’t know how to be in your life, be in your feelings, feel situated within yourself, or how to be in relationships or organizations, it’s probably because you’re more focused on others than you are yourself. If this is you, you are a perfect candidate for Boundaries by Design: A Blueprint for Life , an 8-week structured course for women. You’ll know where you end and others begin, what your responsibility is and what’s not, and what you like, want, need, and prefer. Send us a text I recently came across the phrase, “Stop extending the life of your problems.” This resonated with me because before I got into recovery, I hadn’t realized I was massively extending the life of my problems for DECADES on end by ruminating on the past and catastrophizing about the future. This, I have come to realize, is a very common trait for those of us in ACA (Adult Children of Alcoholics and Dysfunctional Families). This week’s episode 283 of the Fragmented to Whole Podcast is about how rumination and catastrophizing hijack your peace (and how to stop)! Some of the talking points I go over in this episode include: How recovery helped me come to the realization that I was replaying moments from the past and living in the wreckage of the future. Why adult children become “addicted to excitement” and, as a result, do things to activate our nervous system. The 3-step solution for how to stop ruminating and catastrophizing and live in the present moment. Be sure to tune in to all the episodes to receive tons of practical tips on living a more whole life and to hear even more about the points outlined above. Thank you for listening!
