Random Acts of Kindness: A Path to Well-Being
Kindness stands as a revered trait in Western culture (Binfet, 2015), endearing us to others and fostering reciprocal affection. Its effects extend beyond mere social approval, benefiting both the recipients and givers alike. Studies indicate that spending on others correlates with heightened happiness, while volunteering contributes to improved health (Curry et al., 2018).
What prompts the positivity of random acts of kindness?
The notion that happiness stems from actions enhancing survival finds support among researchers. Kindness, fostering robust social bonds, is believed by evolutionary psychologists to elevate happiness by bolstering our prospects for survival and flourishing, particularly within familial, communal, and spousal contexts (Curry et al., 2018).
Who exhibits random acts of kindness?
Researchers posit certain predispositions towards engaging in random acts of kindness:
Observing parental examples likely instills a propensity for kindness, echoing the adage "monkey see, monkey do."
Acknowledgment of our kindness by others can incentivize further acts of benevolence.
Witnessing kindness in others tends to elicit reciprocal gestures, suggesting a contagion effect within social circles (Baskerville et al., 2000).
