We have been asked about our thoughts on the JonBenet Ramsey case A LOT lately given the new documentary release. And although this is Dr. Shiloh’s Roman Empire, we have rarely commented on it. Therefore, we are releasing this audio from the Summer of 2021 (remember those pandemic days?) when Dr. Shiloh and Rebekah Sebastian discussed key elements of the case, the intruder theory, and even some suspects not mentioned in the recent documentary. We end things with a little audience participation trivia game. *Please note that this was recorded in June 2021 and, although we pivot into a serious tone when discussing the case, there are jovial moments in the livestream while interacting with a live audience. This week we watched and reviewed the CNN (now on MAX) documentary, Chowchilla. In the late 70's, in the farming town of Chowchilla, California, 26 children and their school bus driver were stopped in the middle of a rural road by three armed men. The men systematically kidnapped the driver and the children and sequestered them in a dark and virtually airless truck trailer and then buried them. While all of the victims survived, they have spent their lives dealing with a multitude of symptoms of trauma and we get to hear from them in this truly bizarre tale. This week the docs review the one - episode documentary entitled "Hell Camp." It's a fascinating and necessary subject that falls somewhat flat in its narrative structure while still illuminating a dark chapter in the recent US history of behavioral modification and "personal growth" wilderness camps. While the sales pitch of Steve Cartisano's wilderness camp entitled Challenger Foundation sold a bill of goods to frustrated parents across the US; a way to control and re-make their "out-of-control" teens, the kids' experience at the wilderness camp in the harsh Utah desert was a nightmare. The second season of PROOF: Murder at the Warehouse takes Susan Simpson and Jacinda Davis to Manteca, CA where they reinvestigate the murder of 18-year-old Renee Ramos. On June 5, 2000, Ramos’ body was found buried under a pile of debris inside the shell of a new Home Depot building. Despite tips hinting at alternate suspects - tips that were ignored until now - Renee’s boyfriend, 18-year-old skateboarder Jake Silva, and Ty Lopes, the 33-year-old uncle of one of Jake's close friends were arrested for her murder. The questionable testimony of a 14-year-old boy was the key evidence used to convict them both to life in prison. Ty Lopes was killed in prison in 2011. Twenty-three years after Renee Ramos was murdered, Jake Silva remains in prison and maintains he is innocent. In season two of PROOF: Murder at the Warehouse, Susan and Jacinda travel the streets of Manteca, reinvestigating the case against Jake and Ty – and in the process uncover long-overlooked evidence about what really happened to Renee. This week the docs take a brief jaunt OUT of Los Angeles to the sunny and gorgeous sands of Hollywood’s Desert Playground - aka Palm Springs. Although a year round destination for relaxation and glamour, there are dark aspects among the glittering sapphire pools of the Oasis of the Desert’s past. After all, a place with golden age ties to Hollywood is bound to have some sordid stories to tell - case in point: the tumultuous life of Tom Neal, a promising Hollywood actor in the late 1930s, groomed to be the next Clark Gable. Neal's career, however, was overshadowed by scandalous affairs and headline-grabbing incidents that eventually derailed his success. Despite a brief resurgence as a leading man in the 1940s, his off-screen behavior, including a notorious altercation with actor Franchot Tone, led to his downfall. By the 1950s, Neal struggled to find work, relegated to minor roles on local soap operas, where he continued to clash with colleagues. Despite several attempts to reinvent himself over the years, his desperation and addiction led to business failures, scandal and a brutal murder. This week the docs dive into the murky pool of "Body Language Experts" to discuss the explosion of self proclaimed subject matter experts on a field that lacks empirical evidence. The success of the 2009 American television series "Lie To Me" brought widespread attention to the dubious field of deception detection through body language, facial expressions, and micro-expressions, encouraging many people with both legitimate science, law enforcement and military backgrounds to present as experts: Since 2009, the world has seen an explosion of body language experts writing books, charging exorbitant fees for speaking engagements and popping up as talking heads on info-tainment shows that have a nexus with true crime. Bullying in American schools from elementary education through the college years has gained a LOT of traction over the past few decades: attention that is much needed and very much delayed due to characteristics of a culture that has accepted these terrible behaviors. Mental health and risk assessment professionals have brought more light to this topic making difficult and complex conversations more likely to occur than in the past. From threatening and coercive behaviors to outright criminal acts, bullying has morphed into a hybrid set of actions that take place IRL AND in the digital world of e communication and social media. While thankfully rare, Necrophilia, the act of sexual abuse of the deceased, has a long and storied history. Through myth, legend, history, psychological and criminal classifications, this Paraphilia inhabits one of the most disturbing and dark corners of the human psyche. This week, the docs go deep into history, research and case studies of Carl Tanzler and Karen Greenlee to explore a rare and disquieting practice that is a far outlier on the constellation of sexuality. This week the docs tackle case studies and psychological motivations for the development of extremism within US military and law enforcement. The growing threat of extremism presents a substantial threat to the security of the US as a nation and on the community level with law enforcement. Some of the most notorious extremists in the U.S. military are responsible for the bombing of the Oklahoma City Federal Building, brutal racially oriented murders by soldiers at Fort Bragg and the Fort Hood shootings by a jihadist military psychiatrist. Extremism within law enforcement presents a dual threat that impacts both the integrity of the profession and the trust crucial for building effective relationships with the community. This week, the docs delve into the sequence of events that precipitated the tragic and disastrous "Zoot Suit" riots in Los Angeles. Despite the Zoot Suit riots receiving far less attention than deserved in the annals of the civil rights struggle in the United States, they represent a pivotal moment in both Los Angeles and national history. The docs investigate how the media exacerbated tensions by demonizing the Latino community, while also shedding light on the pervasive racism and marginalization perpetuated by industry and law enforcement through opinion pieces. This week the docs review the 4 part MAX documentary series "Last Call Killer: When a Serial Killer Stalked Queer New York”. A rare 100% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes has gotten this well produced series a great deal of exposure on a serial killer in early 1990's New York who systematically and brutally murdered a number of gay men. The documentary does a beautiful job lifting the victims lives out of a true crime narrative, while laying out the incompetence and indifference of the investigators at the time. For this month's vintage case, we look at another untimely death of one of Hollywood's earliest stars, Ramon Novarro. A Mexican immigrant, Novarro rose to stardom in the silent film era and then transitioned to talking films at a time when the audience was hungry for "Latin lovers" like Rudolph Valentino. His journey to megastardom was deceptively meteoric and required him to hide his sexuality due to the era and the strict studio system. His tragic death came at age 69, at the hands of Paul Ferguson; a murderer who went on to create a post-prison alternative history of the event. The documentary guides the viewer through a truly mind-blowing miscarriage of justice in the Texas judicial system that put a spotlight on law enforcement, district attorneys and judges, leading to nation wide reform. In this week’s episode, “Scared Straight: Reform Schools”, the docs review the very concerning history of the way various states in the US have historically (and now currently) handled juveniles deemed “out of control.” From incarceration, to reform schools and now the trend of “wilderness camps,” young people are forced by into brutal environments by sketchy and poorly trained facilitators. From children of the average American family all the way to celebrities themselves, the experiences were rarely positive. For years ineffective interventions have move across the line from discipline into torture, leaving emotional scars that take years to heal.
