Hi mamas. Today I’m so excited to be joined by the wonderful Sarah Ashton, a mental health occupational therapist whose work beautifully blends motherhood studies with occupational therapy, providing support for women as they transition, adapt and transform through matrescence.

In this conversation, Sarah shares her experience of becoming a mother, and in particular we discuss what Sarah calls her hyper-focus around her and her baby’s sleep, and how this impacted her experience of mothering in those early days. We also discuss what eventually allowed Sarah to shift out of this, when this level of hyper vigilance became too impossible to sustain, something I too resonated with.

We also discuss:

  • Sarah’s expectations of being a mother prior to becoming one, her initial expectations that her baby would fit in alongside her life and work schedule, and then he lived experience and the reality of what unfolded compared to this.

  • Sarah’s sense of ‘striving’ in her early phase of mothering to meet both her and other’s expectations of herself in this new role, and how her changing location when they moved house allowed her the space to free herself from some of these and allowed for a new start.

  • Sarah’s experience of coming back to authenticity in motherhood, and how becoming a mother gave her the gift of permission, safety, comfort and acceptance of who she is.

I so enjoyed this conversation and I hope you feel seen, heard and held from listening to it.
