[Health] Did you ever stop and ask yourself, “why did I agree to that?”

In the newly-released book,SIDELINED: How Women Manage & Mismanage Their Health, researcher and author Susan Salenger examines the many ways in which women manage and sometimes mismanage their healthcare.

Salenger describes how women, typically the medical gatekeepers for their families, tend to be extremely conscientious about taking care of themselves. They choose their doctors carefully, visit them more frequently than men, and stay on top of all health information. Yet at the same time, women tend to inadvertently undermine their own care. They’re so focused on members of their families that they sometimes fail to stop and ask doctors the correct questions when it comes to their own healthcare. As a result, they may end up with inaccurate treatments and unnecessary procedures.
In this conversation, Susan and I discuss why women:

  • Put others first and leave little time to care for themselves
  • Are too quick to put off their own needed care
  • Are more concerned about offending their doctor than questioning their opinions/diagnosis
  • Focus on the emotional aspects of their illness when discussing symptoms, yet when it comes to recovery, take the opposite approach
