Would you ever plant fruit in the middle of thorn bushes? Likely not, but if you did, the roots would compete with the thorns for water and nutrients, the leaves and branches would compete for sunlight, and the plant would struggle to produce fruit because the thorns would be choking it out.
Planting in thorn bushes isn't something you would do intentionally, but what if it happened by accident? A first-century field often had thorn bushes planted around the periphery, to prevent animals from accessing the crop. Sometimes, as the sower threw out seed on the edges of the field, some of the seeds would fall among the thorns.
