With the feasts that occur between Christmas on Dec. 25th and the Epiphany on Jan. 6th, we have multiple feasts that train the Catholic eye on making the most of the future without neglecting the past, all while avoiding nostalgia and utopianism. Join us as we consider how everything from the Holy Innocents to the Holy Name of Jesus ground us in making amends and carrying forward the best of what God has given us!Iowa Catholic Radio Network Shows: - Be Not Afraid with Fr. Advent points to Christmas, which points to the coming of our Lord in history, mystery, and might. But none of those are as powerful to reflect on unless we firmly root our contemplation in the Incarnation, and the radical implications for personal and social life that Theological fact has for us!Iowa Catholic Radio Network Shows: - Be Not Afraid with Fr. We interview Fr. Uwe Michael Lang about his new book, A Short History of the Roman Mass. Father Uwe Michael Lang is a priest of the Oratory of St. Philip Neri in London and a lecturer in theology at Allen Hall Seminary and St. Mary's University, Twickenham. He is the author of The Voice of the Church at Prayer, Turning Towards the Lord: Orientation in Liturgical Prayer, and Signs of the Holy One: Liturgy, Ritual, and Expression of the Sacred. This book is a short introduction to the development of the Roman Rite of Mass, the most widely used of the Church’s liturgical rites, from its origins in early Christianity until the present day. Over the centuries, the form of Mass most Catholics are familiar with has been shaped by the Apostolic See of Rome in contact and exchange with other local churches. Understanding this rich and complex history will help not only the clergy in their sacramental ministry, but all the faithful in participating consciously and fruitfully in the liturgy of the Church. In the wake of the liturgical reforms initiated by Pope Pius XII in the mid-20th century, fully embraced by the Second Vatican Council, and implemented in the postconciliar period, there has been an intense and often controversial debate on continuity and rupture in liturgical development. Amid this debate, the long and complex history of the Roman liturgy is not always sufficiently acknowledged. The refinement of the Roman Mass, as this book shows, has been marked both by continuity and by change. From its formative period in late antiquity, the ritual shape of the Roman Mass was affected by religious, social, cultural, political, and economic transformations. But changes are to be expected over such a long period of time and the wide geographical area where this rite has been used. It is the essential continuity that stands out. This work challenges the conventional narrative that the liturgy of the Western church moved from early dynamic development through medieval decline to early modern stagnation and was only revived in the wake of the Second Vatican Council – a narrative that still has considerable traction both in academic publications and among the wider public.Iowa Catholic Radio Network Shows: - Be Not Afraid with Fr. 1 You Can't Be Poorer Than Dead: What the Dead Have To Teach Us About the Preferential Option For the Poor 49:59
Today we pick back up considerations of Catholic Social Teaching, but with a liturgically appropriate twist: in this month of November dedicated to praying for the dead, what can the dead teach us about civic life and Catholic Social Teaching? Ruminating on a wide array of commentators, we explore how the ultimate poverty of death should make us treat the living better and understand how Christ's Death and Resurrection shows His preferential option for us even in the grave. We take a break from our Reconsidered Good run of shows to honor the "spooky season" of Halloween, All Saints, and All Souls to talk about the Demonic from one of America's most beloved Catholic Voices, Bishop Fulton Sheen. Fr. Dave Tomaszycki, the editor of the new book on Bishop Sheen's writings on the subject, joins us for an interview!Iowa Catholic Radio Network Shows: - Be Not Afraid with Fr. We keep trucking along with our series reconsidering the fundamental pillars and principles of Catholic Social Teaching, the same first run of shows we started with when we began the UnCommon Good on Iowa Catholic Radio 8 years ago. Today we deal with the Dignity of Persons, and how that plays into things like the Imago Dei, Human Rights, and how the primacy of the human person alters how we consider any other social question. PJ McManus - Catholic Women Now with Chris Magruder and Julie Nelson - Making It Personal with Bishop William Joensen - Man Up! with Joe Stopulus - The Catholic Morning Show with Dr. Bo Bonner - The Daily Gospel Reflection with Fr. We are keeping it going with the reconsideration of our first run of shows on Catholic Social Principles we started out the show with 8 years ago. Today we talk about Marriage and Family life not simply as "lifestyle" choices, but as Social Goods with obligations for the society as a whole toward them. Iowa Catholic Radio Network Shows: - Be Not Afraid with Fr. We keep rolling along with our Reconsideration of the first series of shows we started with 8 years ago when the UnCommon Good began! Today we explore the Preferential Option for the Poor, hopefully dispel the flat or of base understandings of the concept, and try to shine a light on the brilliance of this distinct principle in the consideration of Catholic Social Principles. Iowa Catholic Radio Network Shows: - Be Not Afraid with Fr. Nick Smith - The Uncommon Good with Bo Bonner and Dr. Bud Marr - Faith and Family Finance with Gregory Waddle…
Keepin' on keepin' on with our 8 year anniversary rewind, review, and renewal episodes about foundational Catholic Social Teaching Principles, we consider the twin giants of Solidarity and Subsidiarity on this episode. 8 years ago we focused on what we saw as shallow interpretations of these ideas, but this time we really focus in on how they are too often seen as opposites or at least something to hold in tension, rather than intimately related, and indeed best seen as subsidiarity being the "Catholic way to do Solidarity." You won't want to miss it! Iowa Catholic Radio Network Shows: - Be Not Afraid with Fr. We move right along with our reconsideration of the foundations of Catholic Social Teaching we started of the show with 8 years ago, this time diving into the concept of Justice, and what it means to give each person what they are owed. We talk about the three types of Justice, Justice and Mercy, and how this principle provides the bedrock to many other considerations. Iowa Catholic Radio Network Shows: - Be Not Afraid with Fr.
