“If something were to happen to me today, would I be happy? Would I be fulfilled living the kind of life that I’m living right now?” In this episode, Nick speaks with Utkarsh Narang to explore the themes of self-mastery, personal development, and the importance of deeper conversations. Utkarsh shares his insights as an executive coach, emphasizing the need for awareness, acceptance, and action in the journey of self-discovery. They discuss societal pressures, the superficiality of modern interactions, and the significance of finding one’s values and purpose. What to listen for: Parenthood can bring unexpected joy and responsibility. Superficial conversations are prevalent in society, and deeper connections are needed. Societal pressures can shape our choices and beliefs about success. Self-reflection is crucial for personal growth and understanding oneself. Awareness and acceptance are the first steps towards self-mastery. Taking small, intentional actions can lead to significant change. Values play a critical role in guiding our decisions and actions. The journey of self-discovery is ongoing and requires patience. Embracing the challenges of life can lead to personal fulfillment. “The world is nothing but eight fucking billion perceptions, each one trying to prove that mine is better than yours. It is not.” Everyone’s view is valid, and no one’s perception is inherently superior. Life is about accepting different perspectives, not proving one right over another. Constantly trying to be “right” just breeds tension. What matters is understanding, not competition. Each person is living their own unique version of reality. There is no universal truth. When we stop competing to be “right,” real connections and growth can happen. “Change is inevitable. Whether I do something about it or not, things are going to change outside of me and inside of me.” Fighting change is pointless—it’s going to happen whether we like it or not. Internal growth happens naturally, just like external changes, whether or not we push for it. Life is always in motion. The more you resist change, the harder it becomes. While you can’t stop change, you do get to choose how you respond to it. Change may feel unsettling, but it’s often where the most growth happens. “We need to spend 2% of our day—just 28 minutes—connecting with ourselves. Sit with your thoughts. It may be uncomfortable at first, but something will emerge.” Carve out time daily to reconnect with yourself—just 28 minutes can shift everything. Sitting with your thoughts can feel awkward, but that’s where clarity begins. 28 minutes may seem small, but over time, it compounds into deeper self-awareness. When we create space for stillness, answers and insights naturally bubble to the surface. Consistently making time for reflection helps you tune into your authentic self. About Utkarsh Narang Utkarsh is a Learning Consultant, Executive Coach, Facilitator, and Content Creator based in Melbourne, Australia. Over his 16-year career, he has transitioned from being a physiotherapist, and a good one at that, to filming and editing 400 hours of content for a Columbia Business School professor. He has also scaled a startup and led sales, and now, he focuses on helping individuals and teams outperform themselves. Throughout his journey, he has learned to make fear an ally in living a courageous life. He has a passion for understanding human behavior and uses his diverse experiences to build programs for organizations across the globe. דWe have to listen to ourselves” In this episode, Nick speaks with KaRon Spriggs-Bethea to explore themes of self-expression, the impact of trauma on personal growth, and the importance of listening in therapeutic settings. What to listen for: Self-expression can be tied to personal experiences and trauma Listening is crucial in therapy to understand clients’ needs Therapists should collaborate with clients rather than just giving advice Understanding the systems affecting mental health is essential Self-care involves multiple dimensions, including physical and emotional well-being Values can change over time and should be reassessed regularly “Even if you can or cannot open that door, the choice to sometimes isn’t right” Just because a door is there doesn’t mean it’s the right time—or the right one—to walk through It’s not about whether you can do something, but whether doing it aligns with your values and goals Some paths look appealing but aren’t meant to be taken just yet—or ever. Honor your intuition The right choice isn’t always obvious, but checking in with yourself helps you decide wisely “What am I feeling around that? Now that I look back at what was going on, what do I feel about that?” Looking back with curiosity—not judgment—helps reveal what truly mattered in past experiences. Emotions shift as we grow, giving us fresh perspectives on old situations Naming emotions helps process them, turning past confusion into present clarity Your feelings are data, not directives. They offer insight, but you get to choose how to respond to them moving forward. “Discipline is your commitment, it’s your craft.” In this episode, Nick speaks with Tannaz Hosseinpour to dive into the intricacies of the nervous system, the importance of discipline over motivation, and the concept of soft discipline. What to listen for: Discipline is more important than motivation Soft discipline balances the yin and yang within us Understanding the ‘why’ behind our intentions is crucial Social media can influence our perceptions of success Generational trauma affects our current behaviors Emotional regulation starts with breath control Self-awareness is key to personal growth Multiple perspectives can coexist in any situation “You can’t shame people into changing.” People transform when they feel empowered, not when they’re criticized Shame triggers defensiveness Encouragement and understanding inspire people to make real, sustainable changes When people feel judged, they’re less likely to reflect on their actions External pressure might force short-term shifts, but internal motivation drives real transformation “Multiple realities can coexist.” Two people can experience the same event differently, and both can be valid Opposing viewpoints can both hold wisdom, depending on context Accepting multiple realities fosters empathy and connection Personal history, culture, and emotions all shape how we interpret the world Being able to sit with different truths expands our awareness and growth About Tannaz Hosseinpour Tannaz’s journey began in dispute resolution law, where she often saw relationships at their breaking points. Realizing she wanted to support people on a proactive path, she transitioned to relationship coaching and is now completing her training as a psychotherapist. They discuss the pressures faced by individuals, particularly in the realm of sports, and how these pressures can lead to mental health challenges. Self-compassion is the way” Growth comes from kindness, not ego-stroking Self-love means embracing flaws, not inflating perfection Encouragement fuels progress more than empty praise True confidence comes from grace, not self-glorification Be your own biggest supporter, not your loudest cheerleader About Adam Dorsay Adam is a licensed psychologist and host of the award-winning podcast SuperPsyched. “Confidence demands evidence.” In this episode, Nick speaks with performance coach and author Steve Magness about the intersection of mental health, athletic performance, and personal development. What to listen for: Performance coaching helps individuals navigate mental and physical challenges Trauma can set a brain’s prediction to be hyper-responsive to stress Mental preparation and visualization are crucial for success in high-pressure situations Self-awareness is key to understanding personal performance and growth Finding a balance between care and obsession can enhance performance Confidence is built through evidence and preparation Visualizing both success and failure helps in managing expectations Sharing the load with others can enhance performance and reduce stress Small tweaks in approach can lead to significant improvements in performance “When we step into the arena, whether that arena is an actual arena or your boss’s office, our brain is predictive and calculates whether we’re prepared to meet the moment.” Our brains are wired to assess challenges and predict outcomes Preparation is key to calming the brain’s predictive analysis The “arena” can be any situation where we face pressure or judgment Confidence and readiness are about training the mind to focus on what you can control Understanding this process helps reduce anxiety and lets you show up fully present “Confidence comes from giving your brain evidence that you are prepared.” Confidence isn’t inherent—it’s built through preparation and action Small wins or practice create “proof” your brain can rely on Preparation rewires doubt into belief, making confidence feel natural The more evidence you give yourself, the less external validation you’ll need Confidence grows when you approach situations proactively instead of reactively About Steve Magness Steve Magness is a world-renowned expert on performance, author of the new book Win the Inside Game. “The only easy day was yesterday.” In this episode, Nick speaks with David W. Brown, a former Navy SEAL and author. David shares his journey from being the smallest kid in school to overcoming adversity and becoming a Navy SEAL. What to listen for: Opportunities arise when you least expect them. Overcoming adversity builds character and resilience. Success is a personal definition, not a societal one. The journey of self-discovery is ongoing and essential. Facing fears reveals true strength and capability. Not quitting is important, but succeeding is the goal. Your past experiences shape your future potential. Embrace challenges as opportunities for growth. Mindset is crucial in overcoming life’s obstacles. Every evolution in life will eventually end, leading to new challenges. “Quitting football taught me a big lesson in my life about quitting” Walking away from something can sometimes teach you more than sticking it out. One bad choice doesn’t define you; it’s how you respond that matters. The moment you realize you don’t like how quitting feels, you start making different choices. Sometimes, a mistake lights a fire in you to never make it again. Feeling ashamed of quitting led to a mindset shift that made future challenges non-negotiable. “When you get an opportunity, you take it” If you hesitate too long, the moment might pass you by. Even if you don’t feel ready, stepping up is how you grow. You can’t always predict the outcome, but taking the leap is often worth it. You don’t need to have it all figured out—just start. The right opportunity can change everything, but only if you take it. About David Brown David was always the smallest person in school, yet standing just 5’3″ tall and weighing 110 pounds, he became a Navy SEAL. After earning his bachelor’s degree, he went on to become an NCIS, EPA, and Department of Interior special agent. Even though he was picked on and bullied in elementary school and was told he could not do certain things because of his size, he overcame impossible odds to be professionally successful and retire at the top of the government ranks as a Senior Executive. https://www.udtdave.com/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/udtdave/ https://instagram.com/@udtdave Resources: Interested in starting your own podcast or need help with one you already have? “Courage is huge.” In this episode, Nick speaks with Angie Biln, a life coach and social worker, about her journey in empowering women, the importance of intuition, and overcoming limiting beliefs. What to listen for: Angie’s journey as a life coach and social worker spans nearly two decades. Intuition plays a crucial role in decision-making, especially for women. Empowering women involves helping them rewrite their life stories. Overcoming limiting beliefs is essential for personal growth. Daily practices like gratitude and meditation are vital for self-mastery. Vulnerability is necessary for healing and personal development. Consistency in self-care routines leads to better mental health. Perspective-taking can enhance empathy and understanding in relationships. Courage is a key component in making life changes. It’s important to be compassionate towards oneself during the healing process. “If we can shift our mindset and be consistent with our mindfulness, our behaviors, our thought processes, our subconscious patterns and intentions, then we can definitely make those shifts.” Real change starts with how we think and what we believe is possible One-time efforts don’t lead to transformation; daily habits do Being aware of our thoughts and actions helps us break old patterns Our deepest beliefs drive our choices, often without us realizing it Each intentional step builds momentum toward lasting transformation “Transformation and healing started when I was able to step back and say, this is where I made a mistake, this is where I’m accountable.” Growth begins when we take an honest look at our actions Owning our mistakes helps us move forward instead of staying stuck Stepping back allows us to see the bigger picture Recognizing where we went wrong is how we learn and evolve True transformation starts when we take responsibility for our own journey About Angie Biln Angie is a life coach with 18 years of clinical experience and a survivor herself. From surviving to thriving, Angie guides women on a journey toward healing, self-discovery, and reclaiming their power. “I just allow the feelings to take over, and as long as I sit in it, they tend to subside.” In this episode, Nick speaks with Kam Knight about the complexities of social anxiety, emotional intelligence, and the journey of self-discovery. Kam shares his personal experiences with social anxiety, the impact of his upbringing, and how he navigates emotions in various situations. What to listen for: Social anxiety can stem from childhood experiences Sitting with emotions can lead to clarity and insights Vulnerability is key to overcoming personal struggles Expressing feelings can alleviate the pressure of holding them in The importance of finding supportive spaces to share experiences Self-mastery involves recognizing and overcoming mental blocks Desire alone is not enough; action is required to achieve goals “The more I sit with my emotions instead of fighting them, the more they lose their hold on me.” The more you fight an emotion, the stronger it feels. Sitting with it allows it to pass naturally Feelings, no matter how overwhelming, always change. Letting them flow instead of suppressing them helps you move forward Observing emotions without reacting gives you power over them instead of letting them control you Facing emotions head-on, even the tough ones, builds resilience and self-awareness “Healing comes from allowing yourself to feel, without fear, without judgment, and without running away.” True healing happens when you give yourself permission to experience emotions fully, rather than avoiding them Avoiding emotions out of fear only prolongs pain Being hard on yourself for feeling a certain way only adds to the struggle Distractions and numbing only delay the inevitable Every feeling has something to teach you About Kam Knight Kam Knight is a coach, international speaker, and bestselling author of a dozen books in the area of mental performance and personal mastery. He’s known for bringing fresh solutions and insights that are a rare departure from traditional ideas. Because of his fresh perspective, his books have become the gold standard for their respective topics, which have helped over 500,000 people. “We set our own internal limitations.” In this episode, Nick speaks with Cindy Rendon, an attorney who shares her unique approach to law and life through the lens of tarot reading and intuition. Cindy discusses her journey from practicing law to incorporating spiritual practices into her work, emphasizing the importance of boundaries and self-care to combat burnout. What to listen for: Understanding the law requires both knowledge and emotional intelligence. Compassion fatigue can affect professionals in high-stress jobs. The universe communicates with us through signs and intuition. Therapy can help professionals navigate their emotional challenges. Self-care is about replenishing your body, mind, and spirit. Setting boundaries is crucial to prevent burnout. Your thoughts create your reality and set internal limitations. Manifesting success requires getting out of your own way. Progress, not perfection, is key to personal growth. “The universe is constantly communicating with you, but sometimes we get so much in our way that we miss it.” Humans are deeply linked to universal energy, like a bridge between the physical and the metaphysical. As physical expressions, we channel unseen ideas or forces into tangible creations, like art, inventions, or emotions. The importance of having a sense of purpose—our lives are part of something much larger than ourselves. Even with our unique traits, we reflect a shared origin, emphasizing collective harmony despite differences. If we are expressions of the universe, there’s a nudge to live authentically and contribute meaningfully. “Self-care is what are you doing for your body, mind, and spirit to replenish your soul.” A single positive action can spark a chain of kindness, making a lasting impact on others. The depth of connection matters more than the size of an audience. Look for the value in small efforts, reduce pressure for grand results. Make everyday tasks feel fulfilling. Minor actions can shape someone’s day or outlook. About Cindy Rendon Cindy is a lawyer who has a heart for helping others. She used to blast Kina’s song “Girl From the Gutter” because the underlying message of someone rising above the fray, succeeding despite the odds, and shutting up the naysayers really resonated with her. She came from a working-class background and was the first person in her family to attend college and post-graduate school. Growing up, she was always told ‘to whom much is given, much is expected’, and she tried to embody that in how she lives her life and in how she treats others. https://www.cynthiarendon.com/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/cindy-r-8042254/ Resources: Interested in starting your own podcast or need help with one you already have? “Self-awareness is truth.” In this episode, Nick speaks with Jeristotle Wells, exploring themes of creativity, mathematics, and the constructs of religion. Jeristotle shares his unique perspective on the universe’s mathematical nature, the social constructs surrounding religion, and the mystical energy of creativity. What to listen for: Creativity is seen as a mystical energy that flows through individuals. The creative process is tied to personal feelings and intuition. The importance of purpose in creative endeavors. Authenticity is key to connecting with others. Success should be redefined beyond social media metrics. Impacting one person positively is enough. Self-awareness is crucial for personal growth. Life’s unpredictability can lead to unexpected opportunities. Creativity should be valued as a legitimate career. Small actions can lead to significant changes. Don’t let societal expectations dictate your goals. Embrace the journey of self-discovery. Listening to your feelings is essential for true fulfillment. “We are the physical expression of the universe as people and humans.” Humans are deeply linked to universal energy, like a bridge between the physical and the metaphysical. As physical expressions, we channel unseen ideas or forces into tangible creations, like art, inventions, or emotions. Even with our unique traits, we reflect a shared origin, emphasizing collective harmony despite differences. If we are expressions of the universe, there’s a nudge to live authentically and contribute meaningfully. “I try to tell myself every time I’m doing anything, if it impacts one person in a positive way, it was worth doing.” A single positive action can spark a chain of kindness, making a lasting impact on others. The depth of connection matters more than the size of your audience. Align actions with a mindset of contribution, making everyday tasks feel fulfilling. Minor actions can shape someone’s day or outlook. About Jeristotle Wells Jeristotle is a rapper, entrepreneur, and founder of the nonprofit Raps & Apps, dedicated to empowering emerging artists. Based in Corpus Christi, TX, he uses his music and personal story of resilience—returning to his passion at 40 after building a successful business—to inspire others to chase their dreams and create meaningful impact. True power comes from stepping outside your comfort zone. “If there’s something that you’re afraid of, it doesn’t have to stop you, it doesn’t have to paralyze you, you can still continue to do it.” Fear is natural but doesn’t have to be a barrier. Taking steps despite fear reduces its hold on you. Facing fears strengthens mental and emotional resilience. Continuing to act shows fear doesn’t control your choices. “Learn from the L’s and the wins in life—it’s not a one-sided coin.” In this episode, Nick speaks with Mark Ross, a Marine Corps veteran and host of the Speak Your Truth podcast. Mark shares his journey through mental health struggles, including PTSD, suicidal thoughts, and the impact of his military experience. What to listen for: The journey of self-discovery through counseling. The challenges of wearing a mask in society. Encouragement for veterans to seek help and compensation for their struggles. Understanding the importance of learning from both successes and failures. Self-mastery involves continuous growth and self-acceptance. “Sometimes going through hell creates a better, more authentic version of yourself.” Tough times often force us to reflect and strip away what's not serving us, revealing our truest selves. The struggles we face can help us align more with who we truly are rather than who we think we should be. Difficult experiences can teach resilience, self-awareness, and clarity about our values. Emerging from hardship can feel like a transformation—like becoming a "new" you with deeper understanding and strength. Recognizing the beauty in how hardship shapes us allows us to embrace the authenticity that comes from those experiences. “The most courageous thing we can do is keep moving, even when it sucks.” Taking steps forward, no matter how small, builds strength and helps us persevere through tough times. Even if progress feels slow, it’s better than standing still—motion itself creates possibilities. Acknowledging that something is hard while still moving forward is a form of bravery in itself. Every time you keep going, you’re proving to yourself that you can handle more than you thought possible. “You cannot pour from an empty jug. Taking care of yourself first is not selfish; it's survival.” In this episode, Nick speaks with Jimi Okubanjo, who shares her journey from the corporate world to becoming an advocate for BIPOC and women professionals. She discusses the challenges faced in the workplace, particularly regarding gender dynamics and mental health. They discuss the importance of self-awareness, compassion, and understanding generational perspectives on gender roles and the need for boundaries in professional settings, ultimately advocating for a more inclusive and supportive work environment. What to listen for: Self-awareness is crucial in understanding one's needs and boundaries. Mental health challenges are prevalent in professional environments. Compassion is essential when dealing with difficult interpersonal dynamics. Navigating workplace conflicts requires understanding and strategic thinking. Generational trauma affects how individuals perceive and react to gender roles. Creating supportive networks can help individuals escape toxic work environments. Compassion is essential, even for those who may dislike you. You cannot help others if you are not taking care of yourself. “Self-compassion is recognizing your mistakes without letting them defeat you.” Acknowledge them without attaching your worth to them. Instead of self-criticism, see mistakes as learning opportunities. Self-compassion strengthens your ability to bounce back. It's okay to stumble; it doesn’t mean you’ve failed completely. Treat yourself as you would a friend who made the same mistake. “Self-compassion means saying, 'This isn’t my fault,' and giving yourself the space to heal.” Recognize when things are beyond your control. Give yourself time and grace to process and recover. Focus on what’s next, not what went wrong. Let go of guilt that isn’t serving you. Healing starts with treating yourself gently and with love. About Jimi Okubanjo Jimi Okubanjo is the founder of Arise Firebird Impactive and producer of ARISE FIREBIRD documentary. “Negative emotions aren't actually pain; they are your mind asking for help to solve a problem.” In this episode, Nick speaks with Ryan Christensen, a hypnotist and author, about his journey through childhood struggles, mental health challenges, and the impact of autism on his life. Ryan shares his experiences with suicidal thoughts at a young age, his military service, and the eventual diagnosis of autism and bipolar disorder. The conversation delves into the complexities of trauma, emotional beliefs, and the importance of understanding the root causes of personal struggles rather than just addressing symptoms. What To Listen For: Emotions should be viewed as requests for help, not pain. The narrative we create about our experiences shapes our beliefs. Addressing root causes is more effective than treating symptoms. Self-awareness is crucial for personal growth and healing. Context plays a significant role in how we process emotions. Life is a game, and we can learn from every level we navigate. “Problems are easy to solve once you know what the problem is. The hard part is figuring out the problem.” Identifying the root cause is half the battle in problem-solving. Clarity makes challenges feel more manageable and less overwhelming. Taking time to pinpoint the real issue prevents wasted effort on surface solutions. Self-awareness and reflection are crucial tools for uncovering hidden problems. When the problem becomes clear, the solution often reveals itself naturally. “The number one thing you can do is be curious. Ask questions, listen to yourself, and own all the crap you don't like about yourself until you fix it.” Curiosity is a powerful tool for self-growth and transformation. Honest self-reflection leads to breakthroughs and lasting change. Listening to your intuition helps you spot what’s truly holding you back. Owning your flaws isn’t weakness—it’s the first step toward fixing them. Staying curious keeps you open to possibilities and unexpected solutions. “Take a step back and take inventory of what other situations in your life were even remotely similar that can help you put the pieces together and understand why you feel this way.” In this episode, Nick opens up about his personal journey of self-awareness and growth. He discusses his struggles with grumpiness and frustration, the importance of being present, and how underlying issues from the past or anxieties about the future can influence our reactions in the present. He shares insights from his own experiences in business, life, and mental health coaching, offering practical advice on managing difficult emotions, recognizing toxic patterns, and aligning with what truly feels right. What to listen for: Listen in as we candidly explore self-improvement and healing, emphasizing the importance of self-awareness and intentional action. Feeling grumpy, upset, or frustrated may not always be directly related to the present situation, but could stem from something in the past or future. Being present and understanding the deeper reasons behind these emotions is important for personal growth and healing. Self-awareness is key in identifying patterns and situations that have led to these feelings. Reflecting on past experiences can help uncover the root causes of these emotions and make conscious choices to heal and change. “Self-improvement and healing, emphasizing the importance of self-awareness and intentional action.” Knowing yourself is crucial for genuine self-improvement and healing. It’s about understanding your triggers, emotions, and patterns. Growth doesn’t happen by accident. It requires conscious, deliberate steps that align with your goals and values. Self-improvement and healing are ongoing processes, not one-time events. It’s about fixing one area of your life; they involve a balanced approach to your mind, body, and spirit. Recognizing how mental and emotional states impact your physical health can enhance your healing journey. Taking ownership of your actions and reactions is key to making meaningful changes. “In those moments where you’re grumpy, pissed, and upset, gratitude doesn’t always help. Sometimes, you’re not just trying to change your mindset; you’re actually trying to fix the problem.” It’s okay to feel grumpy or upset—your emotions are valid and deserve recognition. While gratitude is powerful, it’s not a magic solution for every situation, especially when a real issue needs addressing. Sometimes, the best way to handle negative emotions is to tackle the root cause rather than just trying to shift one’s perspective. It’s important to be authentic with your feelings rather than forcing positivity when it doesn’t feel genuine. Understanding when to focus on gratitude and when to focus on problem-solving can help you navigate challenging emotions more effectively. Taking action to fix the problem can lead to longer-lasting relief than trying to bypass it with mindset shifts. “If you feel grumpy or frustrated in a job, it’s probably not just that specific thing in that moment. It might have a similar flavor to something else in your past.” Your current frustrations may echo past experiences, indicating a pattern that needs addressing. Unresolved issues from the past can resurface in different contexts, affecting your current mindset and emotions. When you’re frustrated, step back and ask yourself if there’s a deeper, underlying reason for your feelings. Be aware of how past experiences can color your perception of present situations, leading to heightened reactions. Frustration can be an opportunity to discover more about yourself and what you need to heal from past experiences. Recognizing these patterns is the first step to breaking free from them and creating a more positive future. About Nick McGowan Nick is all about self-mastery. Sometimes, a simple mindset shift can unlock your potential and help you discover creative ways forward. “Most times that smaller step, that starting step is just asking ‘How can we?’ instead of ‘I can’t’ or ‘I don’t know how to, and therefore I won’t.’” The big picture can be overwhelming, so begin with that first, small step of asking. How we can replace thoughts of “I can’t” with the simple but powerful question, “How can we?” How to turn your mindset from doubt and into proactive problem-solving. 1 Survival And Transformation: Unpacking A Five-Time Cancer Survivor’s Journey With Shariann Tom 40:11
“It’s the pit that becomes that transformative place that is the hardest.” In this episode, Nick speaks with Shariann Tom, CEO and founder of the Cancer Journey Institute, about her experience with having cancer five times and the importance of mindset and self-mastery in navigating the journey. They discuss the challenges of facing cancer multiple times, the need for support and understanding from others, and the power of listening and being present for someone going through cancer. Shariann emphasizes the importance of staying true to oneself, making choices that align with our values, and finding strength and purpose in facing adversity. What to listen for: Cancer is a common and traumatic experience that affects many individuals and their loved ones. Having a support system that truly understands and listens to the person going through cancer is invaluable. Staying true to yourself and making choices that align with personal values and desires is important. Facing cancer multiple times can be a transformative journey that allows individuals to discover their authentic selves and find their purpose. “But what really took me down was the energy level, the will to live, just all of that just felt like it tanked.” The mental and emotional drain can be even more debilitating than the physical symptoms, feeling like there’s a dark cloud hanging over you, making it hard to see any light. “Self-mastery and creating the life you want is an inside job.” In this episode, Nick interviews James Madison, the co-founder of On Purpose Life, about finding purpose and living a life in alignment with one’s purpose. They discuss the misconception that purpose must be grand and how it can look different for everyone. James shares his own experience with procrastination and how he has learned to embrace it as a form of wisdom, as well as the importance of trust in oneself and the process of uncovering and replacing limiting beliefs. Together, they explore the distinction between stress and pressure, the importance of alignment, the need to break free from the hustle culture, and the significance of recognizing one’s unique gifts and talents. What to listen for: Procrastination can be a form of wisdom, allowing last-minute creativity and relevancy in presentations and tasks. Embracing instant gratification can lead to better results as it aligns with the urgency and relevancy of tasks. Understanding personal beliefs and mindsets, like overcoming the “I’m not good enough” belief, is crucial for breaking unproductive cycles and achieving fulfillment. Distinguishing between stress (needing change) and pressure (needing to step up) helps leaders use their talents effectively without burning out. Aligning with personal strengths and purpose transforms stress into productive flow, leading to greater satisfaction and impactful results. “Stress is like the round peg square hole, this can’t work. Pressure says, I just need to step up and do everything I already know how to do with all of my gifts and my talents.” Recognizing stress as a sign to reevaluate approaches and pressure as an opportunity to leverage one’s strengths. We can transform the perception of overwhelming situations by focusing on pressure as a positive motivator. Pressure can enhance performance by pushing us to maximize our capabilities. When we apply the distinction between stress and pressure, we can start to improve personal and professional outcomes. “Until we make the unconscious conscious, it will rule our life, and we will just call it fate. It is what it is.” When we understand the importance of bringing unconscious patterns into conscious awareness, we can take control of our life. Acknowledging hidden thoughts and behaviors empowers us to change our destiny. It is possible for us to identify and alter unconscious influences for better decision-making. Understanding the role of self-awareness in achieving personal and professional growth. “Saying yes to almost every opportunity is what got you here today. Saying no to almost every opportunity is what’s going to get you where you want to go in the future.” At times, saying yes to opportunities can play a crucial role in achieving current success. Understanding that selective decision-making (often looking like saying no) is key to future advancement and goal attainment. What happens when we understand the importance of prioritizing opportunities that align with our long-term objectives. Understanding our own needs for balance and setting boundaries to avoid burnout and maintain focus is crucial to long-term health A component of intentional growth can look like being mindful of which opportunities to pursue and which to decline. About James Madison James Madison is the CEO (Chief Energy Officer), Speaker, Trainer, and Coach at On Purpose Life, LLC. He helps successful senior leaders leave burnout and overwhelm behind to lead winning teams in the achievement of extraordinary results. Take charge of your own life narrative without external dictates. Recognize the power to shape your destiny lies within you. Make bold, unapologetic choices that align with your true self. “I nearly killed myself for my career to prove myself to people that at the end of the day didn’t even impress me.” Be aware of the dangers of overworking to meet external expectations. Prioritize personal health and well-being over seeking approval from others. Understand that your value isn’t defined by others’ opinions or recognition. Reevaluate what success means, focusing on fulfillment rather than external accolades. “Make room for the emotional, make room for the intuitive, make room for the vibrational.” In this episode, Nick speaks with Jason Del Gandio, A Temple University Professor, about the concept of vibes and the exchange of energy between people. Jason shares his expertise in studying the theory and practice of social justice, as well as his passion for understanding the vibe, and explains how he got into studying vibes and the different contexts in which vibes are experienced, such as on a first date, during heated arguments, at sporting events, and at musical concerts. They discuss the importance of being aware of one’s body, surroundings, and other people in order to tune into the vibe and how vibes can affect relationships, leadership, and decision-making. What to listen for: Vibes are the exchange of energy between people and can be experienced in various contexts, such as on a first date, during arguments, at sporting events, and at musical concerts. Being aware of one’s body, surroundings, and other people is important in tuning into the vibe. Distinguishing between intuition, emotions, and vibes can help in understanding and experiencing the vibe. Softening our perceptions and judgments can allow us to be more present and open to the vibes around us. Self-mastery involves understanding and controlling the vibes we give off and take in. “The vibe is the exchange of energy between you and other people.” Vibes represent the transfer of energy that occurs when people interact, highlighting the dynamic and reciprocal nature of human connections. The concept of a vibe underscores the importance of interpersonal dynamics and the intangible aspects of social interactions. Vibes often encompass emotional and psychological elements, affecting how people feel and behave in each other’s presence. People may not always be consciously aware of the vibes they emit or receive, but these energy exchanges can significantly shape their relationships and interactions. “How might I become more aware of the vibe and start playing with my vibe?” Awareness of the vibe involves heightened self-awareness, recognizing one’s energy and how it influences others. Developing observational skills to notice subtle cues in others’ reactions and behaviors can enhance understanding of the current vibe. Actively playing with one’s vibe suggests being intentional about the energy one projects, adjusting it based on desired outcomes or interactions. Mindfulness or reflective practices can help individuals tune into their emotional and energetic states more effectively. “Our bodies are constantly vibing on one another, pointing to a certain kind of interconnection between human bodies.” The exchange of vibes is a continuous process, occurring constantly in all interactions. Vibes are not purely mental or emotional but also physical. The idea of bodies vibing on one another underscores the deep interconnection between individuals, pointing to a fundamental aspect of human relationships. A group’s collective energy can influence individual members, shaping the overall atmosphere and dynamics of the group. About Jason Del Gandio Jason Del Gandio has a PhD in Communication Studies and has been studying the vibe for 30 years. He is a published author, an award-winning teacher, and an engaged intellectual. For his doctoral work, he developed his own philosophy of the vibe referred to as “bodily emanation.” He has published essays on the topic in both scholarly and popular presses. His latest project is called 20MinuteVibe, which is an educational space for learning about the vibe, offering videos, essays, and self-paced video lectures for those who are intellectually curious and progressively minded. https://20minutevibe.com/ https://www.instagram.com/20minutevibe/ Resources: Interested in starting your own podcast or need help with one you already have? “I’m called to be gay because I’m here to minister to the Q plus community because no one else wants to talk to” In this episode, Nick speaks with Karmen Michael Smith, who shares his journey of self-discovery and healing as a queer black man growing up in a religious and conservative environment. He talks about the challenges he faced in finding acceptance and belonging within his family and society. They explore the process of healing and self-acceptance, including therapy and self-reflection, emphasizing the importance of asking questions and being a catalyst for transformation. Karmen shares about his journey of self-discovery and healing, from childhood trauma to finding his calling as a minister to the LGBTQ+ community, and encourages others to embrace disruption as a catalyst for liberation and self-mastery. What to listen for: Being different can be challenging, but it can also be a source of strength and connection. Healing and self-acceptance require facing and processing past traumas and societal pressures. Asking questions and being a catalyst for transformation can lead to personal growth and positive change. Finding community and support is essential in the journey of self-discovery and healing. Finding the right therapist is crucial for effective therapy. The process of healing and self-discovery is similar to the stages of grief. Redirecting anger can be a powerful tool for personal growth. Embracing disruption can lead to liberation and self-mastery. Your experiences and struggles can inform and shape your calling. Ministering to marginalized communities requires understanding and empathy. “Healed people go on to heal people.” When someone heals from their past traumas or struggles, they often develop a deeper understanding and empathy, enabling them to support and guide others on their healing journeys. Personal healing transforms individuals into beacons of hope and strength for others, showing that recovery and growth are possible and inspiring others to seek their own paths to healing. Healed individuals often form or contribute to supportive communities, fostering environments where collective healing can occur, and everyone feels understood and valued. By healing themselves, people can break cycles of trauma and negative behavior patterns, preventing these from being passed down to future generations and promoting healthier relationships. Those who have healed become role models, demonstrating resilience and the possibility of overcoming adversity, which can motivate others to embark on their healing journeys with hope and determination. “It gets worse before it gets better. The stuff that you’ve been repressing and locking away has to come up in order to get out.” Healing often requires confronting painful and repressed emotions, which can initially intensify feelings of discomfort and distress but is necessary for true emotional release and recovery. The journey to healing involves an emotional catharsis, where hidden and buried emotions surface, creating a temporary increase in emotional turmoil before leading to a sense of relief and clarity. Allowing repressed emotions to come to the surface requires vulnerability and courage, but this openness is essential for breaking down emotional barriers and achieving deeper healing. Recognizing that discomfort is a part of the healing process helps individuals persevere through tough times, knowing that these feelings are temporary and part of the pathway to improvement. By allowing repressed emotions to come to the forefront and be released, individuals can transform their emotional state, leading to long-term benefits such as reduced stress, better mental health, and increased emotional stability. “It’s okay to be upset about that. And then also come to a realization that that anger has to go somewhere, and you can direct it in some way that serves you.” Validating feelings of anger and upset is crucial,…

The Mindset and Self-Mastery Show

“Follow what lights you up, no matter how crazy, how wild-haired any of it may seem.” In this episode, Nick explores the concept of purpose and its significance in our lives. He discusses the dictionary definition of purpose, the meaning of purpose in our lives, and the fact that we each have our own unique purpose on this planet. Listen in as he unpacks the importance of contribution and how it is intertwined with purpose but how we’ve been taught, or shamed, into thinking our purpose is too small if it’s not this massive humanity changing effort. Purpose is about showing up authentically and contributing to the world, irrespective of scale, and understanding the difference between a calling and a whim can truly help us uncover our purpose. What to listen for: Purpose is about contributing to the world, being authentically oneself, and making a difference, regardless of scale. Identifying your purpose requires introspection, unlearning societal expectations, and discerning between true callings and fleeting desires or whims. Embracing what lights you up and pursuing it passionately can lead to a more fulfilling life. Living a purposeful life involves continual self-discovery, adaptation, and alignment with one’s core values. “Purpose has contribution built into it, and being able to contribute to your community, the sphere around you, the people that you’re with.” Purpose isn’t just about personal fulfillment; it’s about how you can positively impact the world around you. It involves contributing to your community, whether locally or globally. True purpose often involves serving others and making a meaningful difference in the lives of those around you. While personal success is important, true purpose goes beyond individual achievements. It’s about how you can positively impact the lives of others and create a ripple effect of goodness in your community and beyond. Understanding how you can uniquely contribute to your community and the world is key to discovering your purpose. “Being able to unlearn everything that you’ve been taught from the world that tells you you should be a certain way is going to be a major step in that.” Why we must question societal norms and how many of our beliefs and expectations about ourselves are shaped by societal norms and expectations. Recognizing and challenging rigid standards and stereotypes is necessary for breaking free from self-imposed limitations. Embracing your individuality means accepting yourself fully, including aspects that may deviate from societal norms. How breaking free from societal expectations allows you to express yourself authentically and pursue paths that resonate with your true desires and values. “Callings are clear, they’re deeply rooted, they may not be 100% clear all the time, but they’re there.” While it may not always be 100% clear, there is a deep-rooted sense of direction and purpose guiding you. Our calling emanates from a place of inner knowing or intuition. Even when faced with uncertainty or doubt, there is an underlying certainty or conviction that propels you forward on your chosen path. Callings reflect who you are at your essence and resonate deeply with your soul’s purpose. The clarity of your calling may evolve over time as you gain new insights, experiences, and perspectives. Paying attention to synchronicities, gut feelings, and signs from the universe can help you recognize and affirm your calling. These subtle cues often serve as guideposts along the journey of self-discovery and purpose realization. About Nick McGowan Nick is all about mental health and self-mastery. Dr. Zeledon shares her own journey of discovering her purpose and disrupting systems that don’t align with her values and provides advice for those who want to break free from the system and live a more purposeful life. What to listen for: Discovering and living one’s purpose is essential for creating meaningful change in the world. Listening to oneself is crucial for personal and collective growth. Breaking free from societal expectations and limiting beliefs is necessary to live a purposeful life. Aligning one’s actions with their values and disrupting systems that don’t serve them is empowering. Seeking out community and surrounding oneself with like-minded individuals is important for support and inspiration. Identifying and utilizing one’s unique superpower can make a positive impact in the world. Systems, such as religion and education, can shape our beliefs and values. “The matrix has told us we can only choose one. But that’s not true. That’s a limiting belief.” Why we should question societal norms and the belief that one must follow a single path or career individuals are capable of pursuing multiple interests and talents, rejecting the notion of a singular focus Recognizing and overcoming limiting beliefs can lead to greater personal and professional fulfillment Encourages exploring diverse opportunities rather than feeling confined to one predefined path “I found, I interpreted my purpose to work within the system and learn the systems and advance in the American dream checklist matrix.” We can enjoy the journey of understanding and working within established systems to achieve success How one’s purpose can be shaped by external pressures and societal expectations Exploring a critical view of the traditional “American dream” and its associated checklist of achievements (marriage, house, car, income) How systemic structures influence personal goals and life choices, often dictating a standard path to follow Over time, one’s understanding of purpose and success can evolve, especially when reflecting on how these are defined by societal norms “We need to teach people how to listen to themselves.” Exploring the importance of fostering self-awareness and understanding one’s own needs and desires How we can rely on inner guidance rather than external validation or societal pressures The importance of self-discovery and listening to one’s inner voice in making authentic decisions Unpacking a holistic approach to personal development, where listening to oneself is as important as academic or professional training About Dr. Esther Zeledón Dr. Esther Zeledón is a master of making dreams work and embodies the resilient spirit of a Latina immigrant. Her rich and diverse background has been the cornerstone of her trailblazing work as a life coach, speaker, workshop facilitator, former international diplomat, and scientist. With a commitment to inclusivity, Dr. Zeledón has transformed the lives of thousands worldwide, bridging gaps across communities, corporations, and countries. “The experiences that got you here won’t necessarily get you to the next stage. A reset is needed to figure out where to go” In this episode, Nick speaks with executive coach Joy Branch about her journey, the importance of books in her life, and the concept of executive reinvention. Joy discusses her project, The Joy Project, aimed at bridging the gap in leadership and personal development. The conversation delves into the significance of self-awareness, understanding systems in leadership, and navigating organizational change. Joy offers valuable advice for aspiring leaders and emphasizes the importance of self-mastery in becoming effective leaders. What to listen for: Books played a significant role in Joy’s early life and personal growth. Self-awareness is foundational for effective leadership. Leaders must understand the systems they operate within. Reinvention is a continuous process for leaders. Effective leadership involves listening and understanding team dynamics. “Leaders often have no one to call and say, “I don’t know what I’m doing,” because transparency can be used against them” Leadership can feel isolating due to the fear of vulnerability being exploited. Admitting uncertainty requires a safe space for honesty and support. Leaders are often expected to have answers, even when they’re still figuring it out. Building a trusted circle is essential for authentic conversations and growth. Strength in leadership comes from balancing transparency with wise discretion. “My acronym ART stands for awareness, reflection, and transformation. Transformation happens over time, but it starts with awareness” Awareness is the first step toward meaningful personal or professional growth. Reflection bridges the gap between self-awareness and actionable change. Transformation is a process, not an instant fix—it unfolds gradually. Small, consistent actions over time lead to big, lasting changes. ART is a simple yet powerful framework to guide progress in any area of life. Carl shares his experiences living in an RV, the pressures of societal expectations, and the struggles he faced in separating his identity from that of a preacher. What to listen for: Leaving behind a long-held identity can be a painful but necessary process. Finding freedom often requires confronting uncomfortable truths about oneself. Incremental steps can lead to significant changes over time. It’s important to feel seen and affirmed in one’s journey of change. Compassion and empathy are essential in challenging situations. Everyone’s path to self-mastery is unique and valid. “It was anguish, agonizing to separate myself from the label of preacher. It felt like trying to change the spots on a leopard.” The pain of leaving behind a deeply ingrained identity. How societal labels can feel permanent and unchangeable. The courage required to let go of roles that no longer align. Growth often comes with emotional struggle and discomfort. “I want people to know they can be better—not by society’s standards, but by their own definition of who they want to be.” Empowering individuals to define their own version of success. “My darkest moment became a privilege, giving me a near-death perspective without being on a deathbed.” In this episode, Nick speaks with Jeremy George about the transformative power of bucket lists. Jeremy shares his personal journey of overcoming suicidal ideation by pursuing 52 bucket list goals in 52 weeks, emphasizing the importance of confronting mortality, the role of community in achieving goals, and the necessity of embracing failure as a stepping stone to success. The conversation highlights how taking small steps can lead to significant personal growth and fulfillment. What to listen for: Bucket lists can serve as a powerful tool for self-discovery. Confronting mortality can lead to a deeper understanding of what truly matters. Failure is a natural part of the journey towards achieving your goals. The act of trying new things can reignite enthusiasm for life. “At rock bottom, I stopped caring about others’ perceptions, focusing only on what mattered to me.” Rock bottom helps you stop worrying about what others think and focus on what truly matters to you. Tough times often show you how strong you really are and push you to prioritize self-care. Stripping away outside expectations can lead to a stronger, more resilient you. “Many people at the end of life regret what they didn’t do more than what they did—regretting leaps they didn’t take or creative ideas never explored.” Regrets about what wasn’t done remind us to take action now on what matters. Creativity and bold ideas are often what we miss the most, so make time for them. Embracing life’s uncertainties allows us to grow and prevents regret later on. “There’s no end game or ceiling to self-mastery; it’s a journey” In this episode, Nick speaks with executive coach Ariffa Bevin about mindfulness, self-empowerment, and the discipline found in martial arts. They explore the importance of emotional intelligence in leadership, the art of teaching, and how personal experiences shape our understanding of resilience and growth. Ariffa shares her journey in martial arts and how it intertwines with her coaching philosophy, emphasizing the need for personalized approaches in both teaching and leadership. What to listen for: Mindfulness and self-empowerment are crucial for personal growth. Emotional intelligence is vital for effective leadership. Personal experiences shape our understanding of resilience. Art and mental wellness are interconnected. Discipline in martial arts translates to life skills. Struggles often lead to meaningful growth. Leadership starts with self-reflection and accountability. Empowerment involves setting and maintaining personal boundaries. Past traumas can shape leadership styles and expectations. Self-mastery is a continuous journey, not a destination. Responding to chaos is a key aspect of personal growth. Effective leadership requires clear communication and example-setting. “Martial arts are a huge part of my life—they support my mindfulness practice and provide tremendous joy” Martial arts blend physical movement with mindfulness, creating a space for mental clarity and emotional balance. Finding joy in martial arts brings both excitement and personal fulfillment, highlighting the importance of enjoying the journey, not just the outcome. Practicing martial arts strengthens the mind-body connection, helping in stress relief and providing a mindful escape. Committing to regular practice fosters self-discipline and personal growth, reinforcing that consistency is key in any journey. Martial arts teach resilience and inner peace even in high-intensity moments—a skill that translates into everyday challenges. “The discipline to train with others, showing compassion for those at different skill levels, is a core value for me” Training with others requires discipline, but it also builds camaraderie and mutual respect, which are key in any group environment. Showing compassion for people at different skill levels fosters a supportive space for learning and growth. Being open to others’ skill levels encourages shared progress, reminding us that everyone’s on their own journey. Supporting others reinforces that true mastery includes uplifting and encouraging those coming up behind you. Training with others helps develop patience, both with ourselves and those learning alongside us. “The leadership journey requires adaptability; emotional intelligence must meet people’s varied needs in real time” Great leaders are adaptable, responding to changing situations and challenges with flexibility. Leaders need to understand and manage their emotions—and those of others—to make informed, empathetic decisions. Effective leadership happens in real time, meeting people where they are and responding to their needs in the moment. Leaders who value emotional intelligence recognize that understanding others is a strength, not a weakness. The best leaders stay open to learning, constantly refining their approach to better serve their teams and goals. “Maybe this is all happening because I was meant to carry the mission that they started.” In this episode, Nick speaks with Dan Flores, a fitness and life coach, who shares his personal journey from overcoming health challenges as a child to navigating cultural transitions as an immigrant. Dan discusses the sacrifices his parents made for a better life, his struggles in the construction industry, and his eventual awakening to entrepreneurship. He emphasizes the importance of living each day to the fullest and cherishing the moments we have with loved ones. What to listen for: Support from family is crucial during tough times. Entrepreneurship can stem from dissatisfaction with traditional careers. Living each day like it’s your last can enhance gratitude. Finding purpose often comes from understanding our roots. “I was thinking, ‘Did my parents give up everything so that I would work a regular nine to five?” Grappling with the weight of our parents’ sacrifices for us can influence our future decisions. A 9-to-5 work life isn’t for everyone, and it can feel like we’re out of alignment with our own desires or a sense of purpose. Dan’s drive to do something impactful and meaningful is greater than following a conventional path. Re-evaluating what success looks like for us, considering not just our own desires but the legacy of our parents’ efforts. “My parents came over here, they left everything behind… they had their degrees in Peru, but those degrees couldn’t transfer here, so they pretty much had to start from the bottom up.” Dan and his immediate family showed incredible resilience and determination in rebuilding their lives from scratch. Understanding our parents’ sacrifices can drive our own ambitions. Many skilled immigrants are forced to work in lower-skilled jobs without being able to transfer credentials to all of their hard work The speaker likely views their parents’ struggle as a source of strength and inspiration, motivating them to succeed in their own path while honoring that journey. “No matter what job I transitioned into, no matter what company I worked for, I couldn’t be happy.” Traditional employment can leave us feeling unfulfilled in multiple ways if we’re not being true to ourselves. The pursuit of happiness in work seems to be a significant driving factor for the speaker, but they haven’t found a job or company that fits that. This was a huge turning point for Dan to explore entrepreneurship Like most employees searching for fulfillment, jumping from job to job can be a sign of burnout or a deeper need to find our purpose. About Dan Flores: Dan is a fitness and life coach, motivational speaker, and founder of The Warrior Lifestyle. His mission is to help others achieve the ultimate life and become relentless. The Mindset and Self-Mastery Show

“You’re not cognitively holding onto that unsafety. It’s your body that’s holding the unsafety.” In this episode, Nick speaks with Cecile Tucker about the complexities of trauma, exploring its various forms and impacts on individuals. They discuss the importance of understanding trauma beyond major life events, the daily chaos that can contribute to trauma, and the significance of experiential counseling in bridging the gap between awareness and action. Cecile emphasizes the need for reprogramming the subconscious to heal trauma, the effects of generational trauma, and the importance of integration in applying learned insights. What to listen for: Trauma can manifest in daily routines and chaos. Understanding trauma requires a broad definition beyond major events. Experiential counseling helps clients learn new responses to trauma. Reprogramming the subconscious is essential for healing. Generational trauma can affect individuals without their awareness. Healing is a process that involves safety, processing, and integration. Small shifts in personal routines can create significant ripples in healing. Self-awareness is crucial in identifying one’s stage in trauma work. Integration of trauma insights is a natural process when blocks are removed. Healing oneself contributes to the healing of communities. “Trauma is just being in your sympathetic and not being able to step back into the parasympathetic. The difference between trauma and non-trauma is can you choose to flow between, or are you stuck in the sympathetic?” Trauma isn’t just an emotional experience—it’s a nervous system response, particularly being stuck in the sympathetic (fight-or-flight) mode without being able to return to the parasympathetic (rest-and-digest). The key difference between trauma and non-trauma experiences lies in whether we can switch back and forth between these two states. Trauma keeps us locked in survival mode. Healing trauma means regaining the ability to move between high-stress and calm states, not just avoiding stress altogether. Becoming mindful of your nervous system state can help you recognize when you’re stuck in fight-or-flight mode, a crucial first step toward healing. The power to heal comes from learning how to regulate and shift between these states, which is a skill that can be developed through various healing modalities. “When we let go of understanding it and we simply work with what is, our body helps us transform that trauma when we give it the space to do so.” Healing trauma isn’t always about intellectually understanding it—sometimes, the mind overanalyzes, while the body just needs space to heal on its own. The body holds the trauma and has the ability to release it. Instead of trying to “figure it out,” creating a safe space for the body can naturally lead to transformation. Trying too hard to control or solve trauma can create resistance. Allowing things to flow can be more effective than constantly seeking answers. The body has an innate wisdom. Giving it time, rest, and nurturing can facilitate deep healing beyond what the mind can comprehend. Sometimes, the best approach is to be present with whatever comes up rather than striving for an ideal or a “fix.” Acceptance is a vital part of the healing process. “When each person heals, we reach this point where we then want to help others heal. The healthier we become, the healthier our communities become, our systems become.” Personal healing doesn’t just benefit the individual. When someone heals, they naturally want to help others, creating a ripple effect in their community. As more people heal, the collective well-being of families, communities, and even larger systems like healthcare and education elevates. Healing brings people together. When individuals feel whole, they often feel compelled to share that healing energy with others, fostering stronger community bonds.…

“I want other people to feel liberated in their truth and walk in their power just like I have.” In this episode, Nick speaks with Rich Vysion, a recording artist who recently came out as an LGBT rapper. They discuss Rich’s journey of self-discovery, the challenges of coming out, and the importance of community and support. Rich shares how music has been a healing outlet for him, especially in relation to his mental health and trauma. The conversation emphasizes the power of vulnerability, the significance of rewriting one’s story, and the importance of self-acceptance and empowerment. What to listen for: Community support plays a crucial role in navigating personal struggles and identity. Music serves as a powerful tool for healing and self-expression. Trauma can lead to self-discovery and a deeper understanding of oneself. Vulnerability in art can inspire others to embrace their own truths. It’s important to challenge societal norms and expectations regarding identity. Rewriting one’s story is a powerful act of self-empowerment. Mental health struggles are common, and seeking help is a sign of strength. Everyone has the ability to create their own narrative and define their worth. “I realized that fear of failure, fear of success, and fear of everything was keeping me from pursuing anything fully.” Recognizing how fear affects us can be the key to breaking free from its grip. It’s not just the fear of failing that holds us back—sometimes, succeeding can feel equally intimidating. When fear dominates, it can prevent any meaningful action or progress. Identifying these fears allows for reflection and the potential to change mindset. Understanding these fears is often the gateway to pursuing passions and goals without restraint. “I internalized the negative comments about my music and didn’t have the mental capacity at the time to discern that it was probably a projection.” Sometimes, criticism from others reveals more about them than it does about us. It takes time and mental resilience to separate constructive feedback from unhelpful projections. Internalizing criticism can be mentally exhausting and stifles creative expression. Recognize what feedback is truly valuable versus what is someone else’s baggage. “It’s a conscious decision to share vulnerability and transparency to help others realize they’re not the only ones struggling.” Vulnerability isn’t always instinctive; it can be a deliberate choice to support others. Being open and honest can create a sense of connection and community. Sharing struggles often requires more courage than keeping them hidden. When people see others sharing their challenges, it can ease their own feelings of isolation. Vulnerability invites others to feel safe in expressing their own struggles and emotions. About Rich Vysion Rich Vysion, the conscious rap luminary born in the Bronx and now flourishing in Brooklyn, unveils his latest chapter as a published author, a testament to his unwavering triumph against all odds: How a braggadocious rapper overcame mental health struggles and along the way, created a platform that bridges the gap between music and mental health. “On paper, I looked good, but internally I was still all jacked up.” In this episode, Nick speaks with Pauline Jones (PJ) to explore the profound effects of trauma on personal development and healing. They discuss the importance of self-awareness, the impact of generational trauma, and the necessity of understanding how trauma manifests in the body. PJ shares her journey through therapy and alternative healing modalities, emphasizing that healing is a unique process for everyone. The conversation highlights the significance of mindfulness and mental health strategies in overcoming past traumas and achieving self-mastery. What to listen for: How being close to death and trauma can bring us to an unsuspecting yet healing place Generational trauma can be hidden in more ways than just family secrets Trauma shapes our reactions and responses Self-awareness is essential for healing Healing is a unique journey for each individual, and our personal growth requires ongoing effort and reflection “I left the abuse, but I didn’t leave the trauma.” Walking away from a harmful situation is just the first step and often the hardest Trauma can stay with someone long after the abuse ends, influencing how they think, feel, and react in future situations Just because the abuser is gone doesn’t mean the impact they had on your life disappears Therapy, self-care, and ongoing support are so very important to truly healing after leaving an abusive relationship The process of identifying and working through trauma is essential for long-term emotional freedom, not just physical separation “I was just here to be abused because my mom taught me that, and society reinforced it.” Sometimes, the beliefs and behaviors we inherit from our family can set us up for harmful patterns in adulthood Society often normalizes unhealthy dynamics, making abuse seem “acceptable” or “normal” for some people Growing up with these messages can deeply affect your sense of self-worth, making it harder to believe you deserve better Abuse is often cyclical, passed down through generations until someone decides to break that pattern Breaking free from conditioning: Acknowledging and unlearning these harmful lessons can be a critical step in personal empowerment and healing “And it was just kind of messed up because we were going to church every day with this man. My mom let us live this life, but he abused you, and you didn’t think he was trying to abuse us?” Abuse often happens in places where trust and safety should be top priority, and that contradiction can make it harder to process Sometimes, parents or caregivers may be so caught in their own pain that they don’t recognize or acknowledge the harm their children might be experiencing Complex emotions for someone’s abuser can also be part of the “normal” family structure or community Abuse can disrupt and damage entire family systems, often leaving lasting confusion and pain About Pauline Jones Pauline Jones “PJ” is a trauma survivor, coach, and the host of “Insights of a Survivor,” a podcast where she share stories of resilience and growth to inspire others. The Mindset and Self-Mastery Show

“You have a choice on how you react to what you think is affecting you.” In this episode, Nick speaks with Deborah LeBlanc, a certified clinical hypnotherapist and paranormal investigator. They explore the intersection of hypnotherapy, personal growth, and the paranormal, discussing how external energies and generational trauma can affect mental health. Deborah shares her journey into ghost hunting, the importance of recognizing and addressing external influences, and the power of hypnotherapy in healing. What to listen for: Our own energy plays a crucial role in what we manifest in life. Recognizing external energies is essential for personal growth and healing. Hypnotherapy is a powerful tool for self-discovery and healing. It’s important to differentiate between psychological issues and external spiritual influences. Finding inner silence is key to understanding oneself and addressing personal issues. Cleansing practices, such as using sage, can help release negative energies. “I have a very strong faith. I think you have to have faith in order to be a paranormal investigator.” Our inner belief systems provide us with the energetic foundation to explore the unknown. Having strong faith fortifies our mindset, enabling us to approach challenges with confidence. Trusting in something greater than ourselves helps guide us through uncertain or unfamiliar situations. What we believe impacts the energies we attract or encounter, especially in areas beyond the tangible. In uncertain or paranormal experiences, faith helps maintain composure and clarity amidst chaos. “I have a right to my own way of thinking. That is one of the most difficult things to teach people.” Our thoughts create the energies that shape our reality, and we must honor the uniqueness of our thinking. We have the right to control and cultivate our thoughts, which directly influence the energy we radiate. It can be challenging to maintain personal perspectives in a world that tries to influence how we think. Teaching others to respect their own thoughts and energies, without external interference, is crucial for growth. Owning our mindset and thinking allows us to channel energy in a focused, empowering direction. “To what end will this bring to you? Suppose it never happened… Then what are you gonna blame? What needs to be healed then?” Shifting our mindset from blaming external factors to introspection transforms how energy is directed. Without external circumstances to blame, the energy turns inward, forcing us to confront what truly needs healing. Taking responsibility for our healing releases us from negative energy cycles tied to blame. Releasing attachment to things that “never happened” frees our energy to focus on present healing. Our focus on what needs to be healed now, instead of blaming, transforms stagnant energy into forward momentum. “When something happens, and we feel overwhelmed, what do we do?” In this episode, Nick discusses overwhelm and how it relates to trauma. By understanding that overwhelm can occur when multiple things happen all at once, and our nervous system perceives it as a threat. Self-awareness in recognizing and managing overwhelm is highly important, and taking a step back, breathing, and reflecting on the situation to prioritize tasks can help you move forward with clarity. What to listen for: Overwhelm can occur when multiple things happen all at once, and our nervous system sees it as a threat. Self-awareness is crucial in recognizing and managing overwhelm. Taking a step back, breathing, and reflecting on the situation can help prioritize tasks and create a plan during the overwhelming moments. Daily habits like meditation and goal-setting can prepare oneself mentally for the day and build resilience. “Overwhelm can feel like you just shut down. What happens in that moment is cognitive fatigue—too much mental action happening.” Overwhelm often leads to a sense of shutting down mentally. The feeling is actually a result of cognitive fatigue, which is the brain getting overworked. Cognitive fatigue happens when there’s too much going on mentally. Recognizing this as cognitive fatigue can help us manage it better. “We have the power to stop and slow down. It takes awareness.” We have control over how fast or slow we move through things. Slowing down is a choice we can make to avoid burnout. Building self-awareness helps us recognize when to hit the brakes. Slowing down can actually increase productivity and well-being in the long run. “Cognitive fatigue occurs when the brain is trying to maintain a high level of activity without rest.” Cognitive fatigue kicks in when the brain’s working hard without breaks. This is basically mental exhaustion from trying to stay at peak performance for too long. It’s important to take regular breaks to avoid mental burnout. Rest isn’t just a luxury—it’s necessary to keep your brain functioning properly. About Nick McGowan Nick is all about mental health and self-mastery. The Mindset and Self-Mastery Show

“I grew up thinking that a lot of things were tied to education and poverty. I could get a great education, and if I wasn't poor, none of the other problems, including racism, for example, would exist.” In this episode, Nick speaks with Corey Williams about her experiences growing up in Alabama and the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). She shares how her upbringing and family shaped her perspective on race and class and how she has evolved in her understanding of privilege and marginalized identities. She challenges the notion of a meritocracy and highlights the value of every individual’s worth. Overall, the conversation explores the complexities of DEI and the importance of education in fostering understanding and empathy. What to listen for: DEI is about more than just race and gender; it encompasses all kinds of identity, including neurodiversity, disability status, and veteran status. Growing up in a racially segregated town in Alabama, Corey learned the importance of education and saw it as a way to overcome obstacles. Corey’s perspective on race and class has evolved over time. She now recognizes the privileges she had and the need to address systemic issues. Honest and open conversations about sensitive topics, such as sexuality, are important for fostering understanding and acceptance. DEI is not about giving someone something they didn’t earn but about recognizing the worth and value of every individual. The education system can be a deterrent for certain people, and there is a need for a broader understanding of DEI in educational settings. DEI is about creating an inclusive environment where teams can work together effectively and leverage the unique talents of individuals. Understanding and accommodating individual differences, including neurodiversity, is important for creating an inclusive workplace. Managing trauma and letting go of shame are essential for personal growth and self-mastery. “I am here because I have ancestors that survived. They survived the Middle Passage. They survived wars. They survived. And they survived so that I am in this point right here, and they did that, and so I can do this.” Being aware of the resilience of ancestors who endured unimaginable hardships serves as a foundation for current generations. The survival of ancestors isn’t just history; it’s a legacy that empowers the present. A reminder that the struggles of those before us have led to our current opportunities and responsibilities. There’s a strong thread of continuity between past and present, linking generations through shared struggles and triumphs. Understanding this history can be empowering, motivating us to make the most of the opportunities we have. “What DEI is really supposed to be about is helping people understand how teams, groups of people can work best together, most productively for the individuals and most effectively for the team.” DEI is all about fostering collaboration, ensuring everyone can work together harmoniously. When teams understand and embrace DEI, they function more productively, benefiting everyone involved. DEI isn’t just a buzzword; it’s a strategy for making teams more effective. Understanding how we can focus on balancing individual productivity with team effectiveness. By understanding and appreciating differences, teams can unlock new levels of performance. DEI encourages a holistic approach to teamwork, considering the well-being of each member as well as the collective success. “DEI, diversity, equity, inclusion is really about all kinds of identity. So we’re not just talking about race or gender or sexuality. We’re talking about neurodiversity, we’re talking about disability status, we’re talking about veteran status. Most people have some marginalized identity, and we all benefit when we can see one another more fully and connect across our differences.” DEI encompasses a wide range of identities beyond just r...…
